The day after our arrival in India we explored Delhi with the help of Hoshiar the hotel driver. The highlights included the Red Fort in the middle of Old Delhi, visited by rickshaw, and with each gate overlooking the hustle and bustle of the old narrow streets and bazaars below. Jama Masjid was impressive, living up to it's renown, as the most splendid mosque in India. The gardens housing the memorial to Mahatma Ghandi offered a pleasant interlude before a vist to Humayan's tomb, a very beautiful monument set in water gardens. The next day we tried to link trains to our onward flight to Jaipur to no avail. So we decided to change our plans and tour Rajastan by car with Hoshiar who became minder, fixer and confidente! It's a shame that the computers here ... read more

11-15 Jan Delhi - Sleeper train to Varanasi Well... Following years of thinking about it, months of vague planning and weeks of saying goodbye to everyone, we are finally off on our adventure. Emirates treated us to both ends of the spectrum for our flight. First - Their brand new(ish) Airbus 380 aka "the most advanced aircraft in the sky" - a very spacious and quiet flight. Sadly we weren't allowed to go up stairs to the first class spa, lounge and bar (we did ask of course), but nevertheless, we were like excited children the night before Christmas and didn't sleep a wink! The second leg from Dubai wasn't quite so up market - a rickety member of emirates' old fleet, cargo esque, packed to the rafters with bolt upright seats. Sadly when it was ... read more

I'm still here in California making my lists of what I need to do before I leave in a month. Do I need shots? what about probiotics or grapefruit seed extract - all helpful hints gleaned from different sites on "Travel to India". Sandals or closed shoes? I've found the ugliest sandal/shoes that fit like a glove. Will it be cold in the north? Do I really have to drag a down jacket around for 8 weeks? What about the whole cell phone business? sigh.....what am I thinking? Is this crazy? Picking up and leaving...I'm on unemployement fer gawd's sake!!... read more

First Algeria, then Tunisia, then Green Bay, Wisconsin (of all places) and now India...are you kidding me? Once again we are minding our own business, going about our travels and we are stopped because someone wants to take a picture with us. No, let me be clear...someone wants to take a picture with DAD! Not me...not both of us. Here we are at the India Gate in Delhi and there is this group of young men just staring at us...watching our every move. We realize they are tourists and seem innocuous enough, so we are not worried. Finally, one of the group members gets the nerve to approach us. He asked us permission to take a picture, we obliged and quickly realized the group wanted to take their photo with Dad...just Dad! So I dutifully stepped ... read more

Well we arrived in Delhi without issue--actually a pretty uneventful flight. We scored exit aisle seats so our long legs were not so cramped in those airline seats. The flight attendant gve us a thorough lesson on what we would have to do if the plane went down (because we were in the emergency exit row) and when we took our new responsibility very seriously, he took an instant liking to us in the form of extra snacks, bottles of wine and pampering. He did not even know that dad and I had formed a plan that if the plane went down, dad would pop the door open and direct traffic (as instructed) and I would tell each person "thank you for flying Air India." The new international terminal in Delhi is shockingly modern, convenient, clean ... read more

We woke up at 445am already having our bags packed from the night before and went for a nice early breakfast. Once done breakfast, we got our bags to the reception, then waited for the speedboat. There was a japanese lady with us and a few locals on the boat as it sped the 45 minutes to the airport island. We left with mixed feelings. We were really getting our rhythmn on the island, but we also realized there was more adventure to get to. The ride in the boat was flat, which did me well. Every so often a flying fish would come out of the water as we moved toward the airport. Once dropped off at the airport, we passed through entry security and then to our checkout counter. We don't have this in ... read more

We arrived in Delhi by plane at 4:30am local time and after collecting our bags made what we thought a simple walk outside to the metro station to get a train to New Delhi station in Parharganj where all the budget hotels are located. We found that the metro was closed for reconstruction (typical!!) we therefore got in a cab and asked to go to Parharhganj to a specific hotel. After driving for some time the taxi man pulled over to ask directions to the hotel. After several attempts to get directions he instead took us to a tourist centre where they could help (con number 1). Once there we asked for directions and instead the man called the hotel and then said there was no availability here due to very big festival in India. (con ... read more

... read more

These blogs will no doubt be filled with the worst unfunny innuendos that you have heard, but it makes it all the more entertaining that way! We both landed in Delhi still feeling like none of it was real, went through security and still feeling the same. However when we got to the doors to leave the airport we daren't go any further. So instead of leaving we headed back inside and got a Costa to feel a bit closer to home. Ten minutes and a red bull later we were in a taxi going into the most mental place I've ever been. We spent the day quickly learning some of the does and donts off getting by in Delhi, talking to people in the street ended up us being lead to tourist informations and lots ... read more
