Well now, this is a big one, so please bear with me. This is my first entry I've written since we've been out “in country” so to speak, and not in the gently embrace of British Airways. I am writing to you from Bunk 21 of the Delhi to Gaya “Special” at 0.42, but we'll get back to that later, and the location will also change. In the meantime, here is an update of what we've been up to. 17/4 - We spent the day at The Leprosy Mission Media Centre. Situated in a fairly swanky business district outside Delhi, the building was finished in 1998 and dedicated to Princess Diana. Daily Express readers, please remain in your seats. We've been lumped in with a very Christian newlywed Swiss couple called Samuelle and Mirja. After indulging ... read more

Well then, in the coming blogs, Amelia and I will be visiting a few hospitals run by The Leprosy Mission, so I think it's only fair that we get a few things straight before you encounter that. We don't call them “lepers” any more, the correct term is person affected by/suffering from leprosy. This is not just for the sake of being PC, as I shall explain later. The disease is caused by Mycobacterium leprae, a member of the same family which causes Tuberculosis. The bacteria live environmentally in soil and it is NOT CONTAGIOUS. It can be spread from person to person, but only by blood to blood contact, so we will not be coming home with leprosy. Also, it has the longest doubling time of any human pathogen ie, it reproduces very slowly, so ... read more

Well then, I am writing you from a cruising altitude of 37001 ft at 514mph somewhere over Moldova, (historically the most entertaining of all the Eurovision nations). The journey into the unknown and thusfar, in my life at least, unexplored far reaches of the world. Even now as I sit on this Boeing 777 British Airways BA153, only vaguely do I realise that this epic voyage has begun. Watching the range of in flight movies on offer to me, which at the moment of writing is Lincoln, it seems a very strange and distant concept that in about 5 hours I will be in India! Up to this point, things have been going well. After the manic preparations of the last 3 days, paying the price for not doing enough before. Ho hum. We started out ... read more

I'm currently sitting in a very small internet cafe, it's owner slating someone over the phone, and below me there is a scene of utter chaos that I haven't quite got used to. I have not slept since thursday night, as both flights opted for sub-zero AC and the terminal in Saudi Arabia had the worst seats I have ever had the displeasure to try and while away 5 hours whilst sitting in. The result is a rather edgey Alex, which isn't reacting too well to the noise and sensory explosion outside. That said, I did have an hour-long gander around the streets and can't wait to go explore again tonight and tomorrow with Aneirin. I was hardly hassled atall; I like to think I have a 'man-of-the-world' swagger that repells the touts, but it could ... read more

I'm still here in California making my lists of what I need to do before I leave in a month. Do I need shots? what about probiotics or grapefruit seed extract - all helpful hints gleaned from different sites on "Travel to India". Sandals or closed shoes? I've found the ugliest sandal/shoes that fit like a glove. Will it be cold in the north? Do I really have to drag a down jacket around for 8 weeks? What about the whole cell phone business? sigh.....what am I thinking? Is this crazy? Picking up and leaving...I'm on unemployement fer gawd's sake!!... read more

Today we start our " Golden Triangle Tour' . We did this tour because we were strongly advised to by Lauren from STA travel. My God that was the best advice we had. Delhi is the Capital of India and has a 16million plus population. When we arrived in Delhi it was extremely hot 40C plus and really high humidity. So we appreciated the airconditioned Hotel and the Airconditioned bus that we toured in and our lovely bus driver Sanjeev. It was also very good not to have to think to much on this whirlwind tour that we were about to embark on. On this day we toured around Old and new Delhi. Delhi appear be a much more developed city than Kolkata with better roads, and some parts appeared clean and we actually did spy ... read more

Hey Everyone! Sorry for the lack of updates on this thing, we've only just managed to get into an internet cafe! It's our last day in India now and we're both sad and happy to be leaving. We've had a strange experience here: there have been things that's we've absolutely loved alongisde things we could do without! On our first day in Delhi we didn't want to waste any time so we dived straight in...this was probably the wrong thing to do. We got quite overwhelmed as obviously we didn't really know what we had gotten ourselves into. The day wasn't completely bad but Delhi is absolutely crazy! We visited a local Bazaar street known as "Chandi Chowk". It's right in the heart of the Old City, across from the Red Fort. We got some food ... read more

I've finally reached my last destination in Asia before I return to the western world, India! This day has been long awaited and it's almost surreal that I am here now. I spent a month fretting over my visa to get here and only one week before my flight was I able to obtain it. It was such a relief because otherwise I'd be left with unusable flights. We flew from Singapore to New Delhi via Indigo airlines for only $130! Such a great value and the flight was very nice. There were only 4 western passengers on the flight and this was our first sign that things are going to be very different from here on out. It's nice going somewhere that won't be filled with other tourists like places in Southeast Asia are. Arriving ... read more

Hello everyone, I am in Delhi. It's a really funny story. My flight got cancelled today so I took an 8 hour taxi ride through the crazy streets of India with these 2 lovely American people. The ride nearly made me sick and my head was pounding from the beeping!!! I'm not sure if you are booking any flights but if you are don't book with Kingfisher because they are letting people pay for flights online and then and then they are cancelling 90% of all their flights at the last min without any refunds. I am having such a great time despite all of this and I am really practicing patience and the true "yoga" of life. Johnnie rang me yesterday and I was so excited to speak with him. I am heading to the ... read more
