We had a lazy start to the day. I made the most of it by walking along the seashore and letting the waves wash over my feet – Bay of Bengal. Swimming was hazardous; the waves were crashing. Breakfast outside again, and my friendly chef brought me dosa and the coriander and the coconut sauces. We chatted for a few minutes, and we exchanged cards. He asked me to leave a note to hotel management commending his services, which I shamefully forgot. I will write from Calgary. JK joined me outside for breakfast, and we broke through a certain stiffness to converse about homes and jobs. About 11:00 we drove for less than two hours to Chennai airport for the flight to Trivandrum. On the drive I tried to capture photos of modern India – chaotic, ... read more

We flew down to South Kerala so that at least for the last two weeks we could be warm at night and, hopefully, Michelle could lie on a beach. As we flew in and we could now see the houses below, Michelle was excited; “Look! It’s beautiful, just like Venice with houses alongside canals”. This is more like it after the dry bustle of Delhi. Unfortunately, our enthusiasm was soon dashed as our taxi driver told us of the rain the night before, how roads were flooded and some people had been killed. However the south is much cleaner with better roads and seemingly more affluent with no hassle. Our hotel, The Fortune South Park, seemed nice but smelt damp, maybe from the floods. It was New Year’s Eve and we had chosen to stay at ... read more

So our first full day in Trivandrum (we're just going to use the cop-out colonial spelling from now on) got off to a somewhat late start, crawling out of bed reluctantly at about 9am after crashing out quite early last night. The room service in the SP Grand Days is to be commended as we've been delighting in room service that is (a) cheap as all hell comparatively and we're both tightasses of the first order so never do it in Aus, and (b) actually freaking awesome Indian cusine on par with the best stuff we've eaten in Aus. We even had our laundry done rather than the ole washing in the sink routine. Very decadent! We're basically just in a holding pattern here in Trivandrum to try and recover from the travails of well over ... read more

Oh friends. What a 24 hours we've had. Spoiler alert: We did actually make it to India in one piece (possibly mentally in shreds). But we're feeling a little worse for wear at the other end. After a late night at the Night Market (and an ill advised later night for Aisha trying to catch up on emails), we woke up with plans to pack our bags, lug the huge amount of shopping we'd managed to acquire in five days to the Post Office to send home (NB. Will - DEFINITELY don't pick this one up on your bike. IT'S HUGE!), then head back to Tai Pan for one more awesome massage before we headed to the airport. But what can we say? Damn those plans for never going to...themselves? After a lovely suprise phone call/wake ... read more

I can't believe my long anticipated departure is only three days away. By now I can barely think straight, I'm so excited. I'm all packed and I actually have all my ducks in a row, which is unusual for me, I usually leave a lot to the last minute. Anyway, I work Sunday eve 'till 4am, but I'm going to cut out early, so I can get some sleep. At 6:40 am I'm taking the Amtrak to Chicago, then I'm making a small tour of the Shedd Aquarium. At 6 I'll head for the airport. My flight is at 8:30pm. I have Valium to help me relax and overcome my fear of flying. Hopefully I'll be able to sleep. It's 14 hours to Abu Dhabi where we have a 2 hr layover. Then it's another 4 ... read more

Friday morning at 6:30am we traveled to the Kerala backwaters, the one attraction of Kerala I had been dying to see. I had seen photos before coming on the trip and they looked absolutely beautiful but even more beautiful seeing them with my own two eyes. A young boy Thomas had stayed with us at Loyola for a few days and came with us to the backwaters. We stopped at his summer home on the way to the backwaters for snacks. They had a beautiful home and we ate some fried bananas, dried jackfruit, coconuts, and chai tea. We finally arrived to our boat on the backwaters. It had two bedrooms and was very spacious. We had a delicious lunch of fish, shrimp, and other Indian dishes. It was so relaxing being on the boat for ... read more

This morning after breakfast I picked up The Hindu newspaper and sadly on the front page was a photo of a man who had been injured in the 3 bombings in Mumbai last night. Mumbai is also known as Bombay. The bombings were at only a few minutes apart. They killed 21 people and injured 141. I was able to finally talk to my mom on the phone for the first time being here. She said my aunt in Hawaii asked what part of India I was in just to be sure. Thankfully we are far away from there but this is a shocking reality. People can be so distraught that they think the solution is to bring harm to others. I know there is a lot more to this than the knowledge I have but ... read more

This morning we went to an Indian wedding. The aroma of sandalwood filled the air as went stepped inside the place where the wedding was taking place and received many stares. Everywhere we go we stick out like sore thumbs especially to an occasion like this. I was so excited to finally witness an Indian wedding because a friend of mine who worked at a banquet facility had told me how lavish and extravagant Indian weddings were. The decorations and flowers were vibrant shades of yellow, pink, and green. The bride looked absolutely stunning dressed in a magenta and gold-trimmed saree. She was dripping with gold-bangles, earrings, and necklaces. Her jet black hair was pulled back in a beautiful thick braid that went down to her legs. Some of the family were very welcoming to us ... read more

Wow-time is flying here! In the last week we have done so much! Last Friday we finished the Art of Living Course. It was a good experience and I'm glad I participated in it. For the last day we had to perform a skit in groups of 3. Our group chose to do a Disney Medley-we each performed a song from a Disney movie, I performed "Under the Sea" from Little Mermaid. I felt this course was a great way to each grow in our personal way. I now know the sudarsanan kriya which helps to maintain stress in one's daily life. On Friday we also went to a Sri Sri Ravi Shankar school where we received our certificates for completing the course. Sri Sri Ravi Shankar is the creator of the Art of Living. Once ... read more

Today I got up early and went running for 30 min. with another girl on the trip Brittany. It was still very dark but it was cool so good running weather. Then we had our Art of Living course from 6:30am to 8:30am. The course is really teaching us to find happiness in our lives. Some phrases they said that stuck out to me were "expectations reduce joy in life" and "memory clings to the negative". Also they talked about the difference between responding versus reacting. When we react, we might be too emotional but if we can respond with a clear mindset, we often can deal with situations effectively and as positively as we can. We did the sudarshankriya and it didn't feel as long as yesterday. We also did a meditation at the end ... read more
