Hi everyone… I had my first layover in India. Usually the flights to India are turn-a-rounds because of the medium flying time. We went to Trivandrum that is situated in the south east coast of India. The weather is very humid and warm but if a breeze surprises you it is a relief. After some sleep Luis and I took a rickshaw (tuk-tuk) to Kovalam beach. We soon discovered we got the slowest rickshaw in India as everyone was hooting at us and passing us constantly. Some of the driving was hair rising but after about 30min we got there. Not at all what I expected…one can actually swim there and enjoy the beach. There were Indian families walking around and swimming as well as the tourists. We found the rest of the crew at a ... read more

Friday, Dec 4th - On the train to Trivandrum Can’t believe how fast the last three days went by… Great times, though. It was soo good to hang out with Ellie and Darius again… We really enjoyed the time in our prison-cell-like room. Ok, find the logic: the bathroom didn’t have a sink, but we had one big-ass TV… Well that’s gonna help, when you wanna wash your hands :-) Wednesday, Ellie and I had an all-girls day. We spend loads of money, went to a spa and ahared a piece of twenty-layer cake in the end. We got tailor-made Indian dresses (6 € incl. the fabric) and toe rings as friendship rings. Here, Indian women wear the toe rings, when they’re married. Well, Ellie and I decided it would be so much more fun to ... read more

Namaste! Our adventure begun after setting down at Delhi airport with swine flu screening. Passengers had to fill in health declaration forms before being monitored with a thermal imaging camera. Anyone with a temperature above normal was escorted away for tests. Welcome! After collecting our bags, we followed signs for the domestic terminal and were shuffled on to the oldest bus in the world and driven 5km across the air field (stopping at various points to give way to jumbo jets). We saw monkeys playing in the trees and exotic birds on top of buildings. Definitely not home! At the domestic terminal, we were again greeted by armed guards and had to show our passport and tickets in order to be let in. Inside the terminal we exchanged £20 for some rupees as they cannot be ... read more

Part One : The journey begins... Now...It all began one day when Mr.Evil Vijayan called me up and said "Loser! Come off on the 2nd (of May) to Trivandrum. PK will join us on the 3rd". With those great words of inspiration and without any further idea of what was in store, I made the necessary arrangements and packed my bags. The journey to trivandrum was an ordeal. At that point of time I had made 2 assumptions - 1. That most of the train journey would be through kerala and 2. that Kerala is much more cooler (in terms of temperature :P) as compared to Tamilnadu. In hindsight, assumption 1 turned out to be entirely wrong and assumption 2 turned out to be entirely correct. Which pretty much means that I, travelling in the upper ... read more

It's been a whirlwind in Trivandrum! We just got here yesterday and we're leaving tomorrow. We did house visits and a leader's meeting yesterday and today we went evangelizing, the HOPE computer school, lunch appointments, more house visits, and midweek service. Phil gave a lesson to the whole church and then we split up so Mitch & Laurel could do a married's lesson while Deb and I taught the singles about service. I got to give Tara's book to the most beautiful girl in Kerala, Valentina. We met her on our first visit and last time I really bonded with her. When I went to her house in 2007 they had our 2005 picture in their house. So now she and her dad are my best buds in Trivandrum. I'll post pictures when I can. I ... read more

We forgot to add that at the end of our backwater trip we learned that Mr Old was 72! Off to the bus station to catch a bus to Periyar Animal Sanctuary, a bus that, having glass in front and rear screens, had none elsewhere. Fine for the breeze but not so for the fine dust. At the bus stand (station to us) a very helpful chap with crutch and wonky leg was selling lottery tickets. Not that we needed the lottery tickets but his advice as to which bus was helpful as the writing on the bus was not written with our alphabet. Refusing his tip we got on to standing room only when we started chatting to a young couple from Birmingham who told us they were going to Trivandrum. Trivandrum! Oops! Wrong direction! ... read more

We arrived by bus to Trivandrum after a hellish day of trying to actually board one. In India, there are usually 2 types of buses. One is air conditioned, assigned seating, and comfortable and clean. These buses are usually very expensive, and not a great option for those on a budget. The other type of bus is an old, beat up, dirty, and utterly chaotic local bus. These buses have no assigned seating, and rarely even get the chance to stop before locals are stampeding on. This system, as hard as it is already, is compounded by the fact that the destinations are only written in Hindi on most buses, or the English part is too low in the window to be seen. Add the fact that we each have 2 bags on, it is over ... read more

The scene as I walked out of the airport in Thiruvananthapuram (tee-roo-vahn-ahn-thah-POO rahm) will FOREVER be etched into my memory. India hit me like a brick wall, so different from anything I had ever seen or smelled or expected, the inside of the airport and the outside of the airport were two totally different worlds. We arrived in India on Tuesday night around 9:30pm after two sleepless days of travel which included an impromptu tour of London during our 11 hr layover. In London, 4 of the 9 of us (6 girls, 3 boys) decided to take the subway into the city with our lone goal being to get fish, chips and a good cold English beer. Our first stop was Covent Park where we successfully completed the English pub experience (even getting every tourists' dream, ... read more

By far, the highlight of Saturday's performance was when all the students gathered onstage to sing the children's song "Kakke Kakke". The whole song is about a crow who steals a little boy's cake and is one that every Malayali knows by the age of 5. As soon as we started singing everyone (including us) erupted into laughter and the crowd enthusiastically clapped along to the beat. We followed this with a beautiful Kerala lullaby and I was moved as I thought about the work we had all put into this summer, the friendships we've made and the dedicated teachers who were proudly watching us from the audience. The process to get into my costume for mohiniattom took almost two hours, this can be attributed to the layers and layers of clothing, the layers and layers ... read more
