Hey everyone, Ben here! We are in Trivandrum and everything is going well. After a leaders meeting Monday night we took a train from Cochin and pulled into the station at 3:30 am. We came to the hotel and tried to sleep before Christy and Lucy (Christy is a guy...Lead Evangelist in TVM) came over for a devotional. Then we went out and invited people to church. We met up for a coffee and ice cream bar and the Damon, Christy, and I headed back out. After lunch visited some homes and took a short rest before church. We did the same lesson from Sunday in Cochin and the church was very encouraged dispite some translation issues. Everyone is doing very well and the hotel is too nice, we'd rather stay in huts or something! We ... read more

So the last month at the Ashram was pretty tough going.....ya know....we had to share a room, get up early, be completely silent during all meals, stick to a schedule, no electricity during the peak of 40 degrees etc etc.... So, to make up for that 'tough life' and everything we'd learnt about non-posessiveness, non-attachment and simple living...... Arrival at Manaltheeram Resort, Kerala ........ We had been dreaming of beaches, waves, lush forests, fresh coconut juice and palm trees...and that's exactly what we got! Our first stop in Kerala was at another Ayurveda Resort, 'Dr Franklins', but soon discovered that it wasn't quite up to what we had invisioned! For starters, it wasn't by the beach! So we took a walk a bit further down the street and stumbled across Manaltheeram...5 star! We chatted to ... read more

Hi again Our second week in Sri Lanka was reat. We had sun and heat, and we had a chance to relax after Colin's visa was half solved. We spent the Sri Lankan New Year on the beach with the French man down the road. We bought sparklers but they were rubbish in reality, we still had fun though. Then we spent a few days relaxing before searching Anbalangoda inside out for a pool, which we eventually found and had a swim clean of salt and sand which was nice. Then on our last full day we got a bus to Bentota, a very popular resort. This is partly because of the lakes near the sea, where Colin gave me and Eileen a taste of waterskiing. Eileen was slightly better than me, but neither of us ... read more

2nd entry. It should be noted that Ash is the main journalist, whilst Ade is performing proof reading and minor editoral functions! After a few delays and Ash's initial stomach churning anxiety at her virgin voyage on a propeller plane, we landed in Trivandrum in one piece and without the use of the sick bag (which was in doubt at one point). The difference in temperature was quite apparent as the steam could be seen rising off the runway! Wohoo, could it be Ash will finally get a tan? A rickshaw to Kovalam Beach was secured having been duped into paying nearly double the original fare we'd agreed, but we chalked it down to experience and looked forward to our swim. We stopped at a restaurant at one end of Hawah Beach (there are two beaches ... read more

Did that make you curious? I didnt know what else to call it but we spent all day at the biggest gathering of women in the world - it's in the Guiness book of records and everything! We read about it last week in the paper. Bob being a festival photographer was determined to go and I, being a woman, couldnt possibly miss out on something that sounded so crazy - 2 million women (as it turned out) would descend on the town of Trivandrum and cook offerings to a mythical deity. 2 million women! can you imagine? well neither could we so we decided to try and get the train down the day before. We thought it would be pretty packed but when we got to the platform it seemd rather fine. There were a ... read more

Greetings from Amritashram, Lela and I arrived at the ashram in Kollum on the 19th and I don't know where to begin. The ashram at the moment has about two thousand people in it. It is run on volunteer work with many "old-timers" supervising. Today I served food. Split pea soup was my job. I did the butter as well. The ashram has 3 different food centers. The Indian food is free, and the western cafes are paid, but very inexpensive. There are about 300 westerners here at the moment. The whole ashram is the headquarters for Amma. She's incredible. She's nicknamed "the hugging guru" and will hug all of the guests that are staying here in one day. When there are a lot of people here (8000) she may sit for upto 24 hours in ... read more

Meanwhile back at the ashram... The ashram was home to the hugging mama...amma...and it was an interesting place. This woman has been responsible for MANY good works here in Kerala. She has established many schools , colleges , hospitals , feeding and housing programs . The area we were in was one that was devastated by the tsunami a few years ago. There are still people living in temporary housing but many have had their homes rebuilt by the amma. I really don't know what to make of the ashram .There are several 1000 students that live there and attend the 4 colleges in the area . They are housed in a separate area.THen there were the quarters for the ashramites , the people who have dedicated their lives to this woman and her work. Many of ... read more
