Prem is quite sick today, her hacking dry cough is still there if not worse. Her eyes are swollen and the left eye, tomato red! She had difficulty opening her left eyelids this morning, and it took about a minute before she could open her left eye, they were stuck. We had woken up early today, 5:30am, to go to Kollam for a backwater tour on a house boat starting at about 9:00am. Kollam is a 2 hour drive north of Trivandrum. We decided to postpone the trip for today instead to take it easy as we were both very tired and we wanted to possibly see a doctor about Prem's cough and eye infection. We went to see 2 doctors today. The first an eye doctor in a clinic - the Chakrabarti Eye Care Center, ... read more

Today we leave Bombay and head to Thiruvananthapuram or the old colonial name Trivandrum, the capital of Kerala which is also known as God's Own Country by the locals. Trivandrum and Kerala is also the city and region Prem's grandparents are from. We are sure there are a number of relatives here... Finished packing and before checking out from the Leela hotel, we headed to the breakfast buffet to yet again stuff ourselves with more of the wonderful food. This time we loaded up on the South Indian filtered coffee (awesome coffee with a rich taste) and was all pumped up for the trip down south. Checked out and headed to the airport for the flight to Trivandrum, Kerala. Got a complimentary ride to the domestic airport by the hotel. Today is No-Honking Day apparently, a ... read more

March 9 - We arrived at the airport in Trivandrum at 12 Noon for our 1:35 flight to Mumbai (and then connecting onto Udaipur). This was the beginning of a very very long day. In the morning I had taken my malaria medication and washed it down with the instant Nescafe coffee the hotel had in our room. As I then did not eat for another hour or so.. it did not sit well in me and I felt very sea sick the balance of the day. When we arrived at the airport we discovered that our 1:35 flight was delayed to 4pm. This would mean we would miss our connection to Udaipur and be stuck in Mumbai for the night. After a bit of back and forth with the airline and our agent (luckily I ... read more

“I was full of gratitude,” I tried to recount my experience two days after we returned from Agasthyarkoodam. Our thighs, calves and soles were still stiff, but our minds wandering over the breezy mountain. “We should have spent more time on the summit. It was an energy field,” said Nazeeb. “I felt like flying in the hard cold wind. My mind was weightless,” said Sunil. The three of us made a pact to go there every year. We wouldn’t even think of it 24 hours ago, when an imaginary elephant waited at every bend in the dark road and an imaginary snake slithered beneath every step we took. I was the last in the frightened convoy, flashing the torch and remembering Jim Corbett tales, where the leopard always targeted the trailing one. Every muscle ached after ... read more

The journey to India was delayed before it even began - the agency who'd convincingly promised that, for a small fee, they could secure an Indian visa in time for us to cross the border and catch the trains we had booked to get to Goa in time for new year, unfortunately didn't come through with the goods - we only discovered this late on 27 December, the date we were due to depart. "We're very sorry" they said - "the Embassy has been closed, not just for Christmas day but also for the Eid festival the week before AND for boxing day, so all visas have been delayed" (other travellers explained that the Indian Embassy takes the opportunity to close for as many public holidays as they can and because India is such a multi ... read more

Only 1 night before I fly out of India. I realised yesterday that, even though I have really had it with all the energy draining hassles here, I do feel a like I am leaving behind a country with a very intriguing culture. One that we (westerners) can't really understand, and unique in the world. I was sitting in a bus from Kovalam beach back to my hotel room in Trivandum (=Thiruvanthapuram, but everybody calls it Trivandrum, a little easier to pronounce), looking out the window. The street scenes have become almost normal to me, a daily reality. The bright colors that suit the Indian women so well, the beggars, the cheating and spitting street vendors, the garbage everywhere (although the South seems to be somewhat cleaner than the North, or is that just my impression ... read more

Have left northern India behind and flown to Kerala today - staying the night in Trivandrum and heading to Varkala and hopefully a nice beach hut tomorrow. Shockingly enough as soon as I got anywhere near a beach it started raining! Hopefully sometime over the next few days it will clear up.... The last week of volunteering in Himachal was so much fun - had a couple of parties (our leaving do and a rooftop party at Silver camp) where the crazy Indian beer worked its magic again. The leaving party was great, all the staff joined in for some bizarre Indian dancing and party games. I slept on the roof of Silver Camp every night last week - amazing to lie staring at the stars and Milky Way with the mountains in the background and ... read more

oh my god i cannot cope anymore....! yesterday we flew from Mumbai to Trivandrum...again with a very near death experience trying to land through monsoon clouds - this one was worse! so we thought 'oh yes the south will be chilled' as flew over acres and acres of coconut palms and backwater rivers...but how wrong we were! as soon as we landed the monsoon heavens opened and drenched us completley! we arrived in trivandrum, we wanted to do the cheap option and travel by local bus for Rs5 but we couldnt find the bus station and the roads were soon flooded to almost knee high with monsoon waters, so a autorickshaw took us into town for a more expensive fee of Rs50!! thats almost 60p! drving into town the roadsd were more busy and hectic than ... read more

We are at Christy and Lucy's house again saying our goodbyes and wanted to jump online and tell you all what's been going on. We would like to send this (possibly final) blog out to Brett who has been a great inspiration to our sister Cindy. It's been great to read your comments and know that you are thinking of us, bro. I can't wait to meet you. It reminds me of the last trip to India when we got comments from two guys names Rob and Lee. It's cool to hear from brothers and sisters while we're on the other side of the world and then meet them once we get home. Huge thanks to all the people who have lifted our spirits while we are separated from our loved ones. We will be leaving ... read more

Well, it's our last full day here and it's shaping up to be very busy. If my wife and son were here I know I would want to stay longer. But I can't wait to see them again!!!! I won't tell you everything we've been doing, I'll let the others write what has been impacting them. I will just tell you all how amazing they have been doing. Cindy has changed right in front of my eyes! I thought she was so quiet and shy and have been blown away by her heart to share and DANCE!!!!! I must admit I was most nervous about Autumn before we came but she has become one of my best friends and the most mature teenager I have ever met. Doureen is my new mom and has so much ... read more
