The Marari Beach Resort was planned to be 4 days of relaxation after all our travels and trips. We have spent most of our time round the pool, walking along the beach, reading our books and enjoying the local food. Marari Beach is a wonderfully relaxing resort but is not "real India". It is cocooned from the real world and unformed security guards stand at every entrance, some alongside notices stating "Residents Only". It is ideal for break from the rough and tumble of "real India". But for the smiling Keralan faces of the wonderful staff and the local food, it could be a beach resort in many other parts of the world. This is almost the end of our journey through India as on Monday 1 March we travel back to Kochi and the following ... read more

Lake Vembanad is the second largest lake in India and stretches north to south for nearly 100 km. Alongside the lake are paddy fields and coconut plantations, together with the village communities who harvest the rice and the coconuts. The tourist industry plays its part in the economic wellbeing of these small lakeside communities and we played our part by spending just short of 24 hours on a kettuvallam, better known as a houseboat. Our boat was about 80 feet long and wide enough to accommodate an outdoor lounge area, a dining room, ensuite air conditioned bedroom and the crew's quarters which included the kitchen. We were waited on hand and foot and the lake and its surroundings were a visual feast. After lunch we had a gentle sail around part of the edge of the ... read more

Floating on Our 'Dreams' Alleppey is a quiet, friendly town on the edge of the famous "backwaters", (India's version of Venice). We 'roosted' for the night in a bamboo hut nestled on the roof, high up in the tree canopy of a family home, we were surrounded by a multitude of bird calls well into the hot sticky night. Early next morning we boarded our much 'haggled-over' houseboat, "Dreams"..... a converted rice barge complete with two bedrooms, lounge, sundeck, and three very friendly indian crew (cook, driver & captain). We were welcomed with hot masala chai and ushered to the sun deck to lie on the chaise-lounge, kick back and watch the magical water world pass us by. Dreams came with all the tasty treats you would expect and free beer, amazing in India. We spent ... read more

Hello , I thought I would begin this blog by giving a tiny bit of background on Kerala State, the region of India where I am currently traveling. Kerala is one of the only places in the world to have had a democratically elected communist government in power for most of the past 60 years. Kerala also has the highest literacy and education rates, and the highest life expectancy in all of South Asia. Here there is little of the extreme poverty seen elsewhere in India, and there are also virtually no Western chains or franchises in the entire state. There are, however, hammer and sickle flags flying virtually everywhere, and murals of Che Guevara are commonplace. So I've spent the past couple days traveling across Kerala from the beach town of Varkala to the hill ... read more

We caught a sleeper train from Madurai station at 10.45 on Thursday    night and arrived in kollam at 9.30 Friday morning.  The journey wasn't actually that bad, it looks really crowded  when all the beds are folded down but we were all able to sleep ok. We met up with the rest of us then had to take a 2 hour bus journey to the boat, which (after stopping off at the off licence and supermarket 4 supplies) we were on by 1. Just in time for the chef to serve up some really nice fish for lunch. Then for the rest of the whole day we just sat around on the top deck relaxing, sunbathing, looking at the amazing scenary, talking, playing cards and drinking. We had a really tasty dinner of fried ... read more

Hi again everyone! Just back in the journalism office now, but have had an amazing weekend! A group of us from my accommodation headed to Allepey, supposedly the "Venice of the East", in the next door state, Kerala. It was quite a hard journey to get there - we had to take 6 different public buses, all of which were absolutely packed, and although we left at 10 pm on Thursday night, we didn't get to Allepey until 11 am the next day! We did manage to get some sleep though, as one of our buses was delayed by three hours, so we slept outside on the floor of a bus station - I don't think the Indian people could believe their eyes when they saw us! When we got Allepey we met another volunteer who ... read more

An 8 hour ferry ride from Kollam to Alleppey was the most relaxing day we have had. The sun was shinning and a nice cool breeze followed us all the way. There was nothing else to do but kick back with a good book and watch life in the backwaters go by. Alleppey was a sleepy, laid back town which was very refreshing considering where we were staying in Kollam. Our accommodation in Alleppey was the pick of the bunch, only four rooms, set far away from the road, with a great patio and fan where we spent most of the day chatting to our neighbours on their way to live in NZ. Alleppey had a lovely golden beach but the sea was rough and we decided not to brave the strong current. Instead we found ... read more

I've had my first dose of India getting the better of me. It only took one week. One week... and some young sexually repressed men. Part of me can hardly blame them: there are beautiful women everywhere and 99% of them dare not be in the public eye with not only sleeves and long pants under long shirts... but with scarves strategically placed to disguise the fact that they own breasts. I hadn't realized how much of my energy had been invested in worrying about how my long shirt was sitting, about not having a scarf yet, and then --once I did-- whether it was still sitting where it ought. Yep... pretty oblivious up to the point where I lost it when I caught a man peeking through the window watching me shower on the house ... read more

Hi!! I've been here 3 days now, and I have to say... this is truly where I belong. I have such a feeling of happiness every time I walk down the street or take a rickety, crowded bus to the next town over. I can't imagine myself doing anything else right now! I have spent the last couple days here visiting the places where I'll be working. I've worked out a sort of schedule that the other volunteer, Natalie, and I will be following for the 2 months that I'm here (she's only here for 6 weeks, and then is replaced by another 2 girls from the UK). Monday mornings and Tuesday mornings we're spending at a village school, where students who cannot afford an education are sponsored to attend. We'll mostly be using games and ... read more
