I have a confession to make - I have fallen in love; her name is Laxmi. Already I am trying to arrange for her to come to England - Carol is very understanding and says that it will not change anything between us. I saw Laxmi again yesterday and bought her lunch. She likes fruit and has very long eye lashes. After eating she allowed me to get on her back and we went for a ride. Bliss. Carol says that we could convert our garage and perhaps raise the roof so there was more room. The Goans are lovely people - very gentle. The tourist area is very much a development 400 metres inland running along the coast - as soon as you move away from the coast it is paddy fields, farms and deep ... read more

Kerala - also known as God's Own Country (along with Yorkshire in England) and they both are ! We are now plotting our own route and are finding the most wonderful places. After arriving in Cochin, we picked up a pre paid taxi at the airport and drove 55 kms for 10 pounds to a homestay. We stayed at Olivipe Homestay which was great and the family really hospitable. Deep in the heart of the backwaters, it is so perfect that you could't dream it up. Prawn farms and lazy canoeing with coconut groves and joyous local festivals plus caparisoned elephants galore. The people are lovely and Kerala is one large continuous village with nice houses and sleek cattle. Carol milked a cow yesterday and will be persuading Nicky Rowles that we could house one with ... read more

Well, food caught up with me. I'm not feeling too bad now. Just was up half the night doing the bathroom shuffle. Nobody else has it, so I think it's the one Lassi I drank. Best guess. Pretty much spent today sleeping in a hammock listening to the waves and the crows. Lots of crows here. Eating toast and bananas. Finally feel better now at around 5:30pm. Think I'll look for some toast again ;) Or some parathas. I think I'll also take Pami's advice and look for an Ayervedic massage. Tomorrow we leave here with a driver around 10am. Will check out Cochin. Chinese fishing nets, fort cochin, and some other tourist stuff. Then fly to Mumbai and do overnight train towards Ajenta and Ellora. Claudia and mom took a rickshaw to the village to ... read more

Well, we've landed in Paradise. Kerala is awesome. Best food on earth, beautiful country. I want to retire here. Left Kumily on Jan 3rd to go down to Alleppey. Stopped at a tea plantation and saw the tea factory. Pretty neat stuff. Gave an old crippled begger woman Rs. 100. Good karma eh? Aroma of the tea was amazing. Unfortunately they use tons of wood to roast the tea, hopefully they're not cutting down virgin forests for this. That's my tree hugger speach. The drive from Kumily and the cardomon hills to the coast is amazing. Starts with tea plantations everywhere. Then the hills get real steep and we begin the decent. Sheer cliffs, terraced gardens everywhere. Crazy roads. Stopped at a local restaurant that the driver picked. We ate "meals" again. Cost to stuff our ... read more

After our terrible stay in Kolkata, we made our way down to Cochin via the Bombay airport. After yet another hair-raising taxi ride we made our way to a smaller town called Alleppey nestled in the backwaters of Kerala. Our taxi driver didn't know where our hotel was so he pulled over to the side of the road and called them to get directions using his own cell phone! We were consistently baffled and pleased by how out of the way people were willing to go to help us. We found our hotel in the trusty Lonely Planet book and the funny owner of the place wouldn't let us forget it! He talked our ear off about how Lonely Planet even put his banana pancakes in the paragraph about his hotel! India is BIG on banana ... read more

Next stop - Alleppey. we were in 2 minds whether to go to Kollam or Alleppey to sample the backwaters as we heard they were both brill but Alleppey was more touristy and Kollam was not and had more natural beauty. so going for au natural we opted for Kollam, but changed our minds very last min to head to Alleppey (as pursuded by locals) - good choice tho! Alleppey is a lovely little town with lots of workshops and factories and old men fixing stuff on the street. it wasnt touristy at all - didnt see any westeners at all in town! all the children were so polite and enthusiastic and ran up to us shouting 'Hi'! not asking for pens or anything they just wanted to say hey - so sweet! we were like ... read more

Nothing ever dries here!- The dampness in everthing, even your bones, never goes away..mildew has become my friend-I didnt' think properly of this fact when I barely packed any clothes to take! THey use irons here A LOT! not to iron per se, but to dry out their clothes. The rain has been absolutely relentless. The puddles of brownish-red mud everywhere, makes teh streets an obstacle course one must pass through daily. I have had my first real encoutner with the public toilet-eeeeewwwwwwwwww! Way to afraid of what may come out! I took a taxi home instead. Bathing is also an issue for me. There is no hot water and showerign is a feat with icy cold pellets that don't come down heavy, so it's pure torture trying to get the soap off quickly. They ... read more

I've almost reached the end of my stay here, in the south, in Kerela. Beautiful Kerela where banana trees are abundantly available and coconuts are as far as your backyard. The people here have been nothing but kind and accepting of me, if not isn awe at times. Everywhere I go, I have an audience that is just dying to test out their English-mostly with "hello's" and "how do you do's". Kerela has been my first introduction to India, and Alleppey, it's Embassador. I dont' think that the big cities will have it's 'at home' charm and charisma. The big citiies, as with most big cities, will be largely overwhelming, perhaps cold, and definatley not as personable! My neighbour here who's family rents a flat (if you can call two rooms of an old house that), ... read more

Thank you again. I've come to realize after much debate, that I will just take the card back to Canada, and have purchased a new one from a friendly stranger named Emmanuel! I am having a bit of a crises, but no meltdown (yet) . Apparantly, unbenounced (sp) to me, the entourage (which has now dwindled but still includes the baby who happened to have puked inside that 8 hour van ride on hour 2..only you can imagine that trip....) anways, I digress...We are slated to leave for Bangalore tmrw. I heard through the grapevine, not that anything is ever told directly to me, that there is a strike happening here and that all stores, shops, stalls, etc are closed here tmrw. So where does that leave the train? Noone seems to know, bother to find ... read more

My card reads as empty, however there are pictures there...you can see them on the camera, but cannot open them on the computer...if i reformat the card, will I loose all the pics? I have walked around aimlessly, trying to find a shop that can help..noone knows what to do?
