Land created the gateway for the ocean water to gush in to all its low lying areas to form, what is famously known as backwaters. This time a new team, a new place, but with same old passion to explore more in Gods own country, we set out to the well known backwaters of Kerala- Alleppey( Venice of the East). We planned everything specially for Vinoy who wanted to fly back in time and get back to his bachelors life. We packed our bags and left office pretty early only to see how fast clouds congregate upon us. Before we started our actual sojourn from Cochin, rain started thundering upon us and we were drenched. We almost traveled the entire 65kms in rain accepting the greetings by nature in the form of rivers and small ... read more

Whew! It's been a packed 3 weeks - sorry for the lousy non-updates! We are now in the very far south of India, in the state of Kerala, enjoying our "luxury" portion of our trip - recharging our batteries, one could say. Kerala is beyond beautiful. It's worth googling "Kerala backwaters" to get an idea of what I mean. It's as if God himself took a step here and his footprint filled up with a calm, even sheet of clear water. The water is flat as can be, for miles and miles. We are staying in the backwaters and it's so interesting to see the way of life here. Homes sit in narrow strips of land between canals and water-logged rice paddies. Men in long, narrow, dark-wood canoes slowly drift by, propelled by long bamboo sticks. ... read more

... read more

I finally managed to drag myself away from Varkala. And it was a real drag! My last night in Varkala was fabulous. I went to see the Kathakali dancers who did an amazing performance of a fable about a demon who falls in love with a mortal, so she disguises herself as a beautiful girl. She proposes marriage to him, but when he refuses her she turns back into a demon and he saws off her breasts. The makeup they wear is amazing, all made from powders of stones mixed with coconut oil. And they put some sort of herb in their eyes that makes the whites turn red and blood shot looking. The total effect is quite amazing. Before they do the play they do a demonstration of how facial gestures are used to portray ... read more

This blog entry is being written in the middle of Vembanadu Lake, the largest lake in Kerala. Ok, the houseboat we're on hasn't actually got broadband connection, but we have got a notebook and a pen with us and we'll post this on the net as soon as we can. Half an hour later now, and we're moored up on Martandu Island, just having finished our lunch of okra stew and other vegetarian curries. The island is full of paddy fields actually lower than the water we're on, being held back by just a narrow pathway lined with coconut trees and being kept at the right saturation by an occasional pump house. As we sit here, women are returning from the fields, some wearing umbrella topped hats against the sun, changing from their work clothes into ... read more

Tom: So, after recovering (quite quickly thankfully) from our dodgy tums in Varkala and generally just chilling a bit (yes Soph we both had Ayurvedic massages and yes it was different :-)), we bussed it on up to Allepey to take in a backwaters cruise. Of course we're right in the peak of the peak season, so they wanted blood (actually I should try donating blood next time, I'm sure there's a shotage here). Luckily, we got a cancelled slot but it was PRICEY let me tell you. I thought well we're only coming here once, so we booked it for the next day. We spent the evening mooching round Allepey - it was the first day of 4 days of festivals (for New Year I presume) around the beach. Great seeing so many kids and ... read more

After a rather excitable breakfast with presents, cards and stockings (thank you Santa, aka Jess), we set off decked up in our Santa hats singing carols, much to the amusement of all, to the harbour to find our barge. What we saw left us pretty much speechless with joy, it was so worth the few extra pounds and we jumped on board by far the nicest kettuvallum (converted rice barge), which came with a captain, cook and boat boy, moored along the canal to explore the network of palm fringed waterways that line the coast and meander inland. We headed out over a large lake, past little villages, arable land, churches, mosques, temples, schools, women washing, men fishing and listening to incredibly loud music, hoards of quacking ducks, processions of pilgrims dressed all in yellow with ... read more
