The train was full of students returning home for the holidays and totally packed, it reminded me of the long haul back from Aberdeen with just pennies to your name and sharing BLT’s. We almost missed our stop and had to make a made rush through the crowds to the exit until one gentleman politely mentioned that “Madames the train will wait’ The station was like a ghost town, I think we were the only people to disembark and any minute I expected a tumble weed to roll past, eerie… This time we had booked ahead and made our way to the heritage hotel. Unfortunately we weren’t staying in the actual old house with wooden structures, lime washed walls and cement floors but had a whole flat to ourselves; 2 double A/c rooms with ensuites, a ... read more

We arrived in Trivandrum, Kerala (Southern India) safely from a relaxing week in Goa. Our reason for coming to this town (via overnight train) was to attend a close-up magic class at THE ACADEMY OF MAGICAL SCIENCES. I had researched the class from a tip by Ade(about 6months ago), that there were sessions be held in southern Kerala. Immediately I began to research on-line and signed up for a class. Please check out www.magicmuthukad.com to get a better idea of what I'm talking about. We arrived at the academy via rick-shaw and met our hosts. The staff told us we did not have to pay the 250rupees ($7USD) and that we were there honorary guests. We entered the class, which was held in a large theater and sat about 40 local people (age range from 12-70yrs?). ... read more

Now I’ve tried many forms of transpot in India so far and the last few days I’ve been exploring a new method, ferry’s, canoes and luxury house boats. As well as the beaches Kerala is reknown as the place to float through its extensive rivers and backwater system, and according to Lonely Planet, is a ‘must do’. How cold you refuse that. So the next stop on the agenda was Kollam, which is the southern gate way to the backwaters. From here we took the 8 hour ferry ride up the coast to Alleppey, winding our way through the coconut palm embankments, cashew nut plantations, and hundreds of villages pinned to the waters edge. Although a long journey an incredibly easy and relaxing one, floating along peering into the lives of the Keralan people. Watching how ... read more

We made it Madikeri and the plan was to do some hiking in the mountains around tea plantations. However, plans changed as Jarrod was feeling a bit lack luster with symptoms that he described as "dengue like." Turns out he didn't have dengue but just a bit under the weather with a sore throat. Instead of hiking, we spent a lot of time watching TV and pursuing the local shops. I found a nice jewelry shopkeeper who actually gave me an honest price and ended up being decked out with silver toe rings (married Indian ladies wear two toe rings on the toe beside the big toe) and a gold nose stud. All for a total price of 155 rupees ($3.50 CDN). The Epic Journey Still feeling a bit ill, Jarrod agreed to leave Madikeri and ... read more

From the beaches of Varkala (or lack thereof) I headed to the backwaters of Kerala, bound for the town of Alleppey. Up at the crack of dawn on Sunday morning, a rather rude awakening following 3 days of late mornings and lazy breakfasts, I caught a train to the town of Kollam where I picked up a ferry for an 8 hour cruise along the backwaters to Alleppey. It was clear to me that we were certainly in the tourist off-season as joining me on a boat that probably holds about 40 people were just two other travellers. one a french guy and the other an Israeli who looked the sptting image of "Apprentice" star Paul Tulip in his mad hair days. The cruise itself was an incredibly relaxing journey, so relaxing in fact that I ... read more
