Sunay, date unknown: Time: 5:20 p.m. I've grown to become very comfortabel with being uncomfortable. Thought go through my head like moments unfolding on a blank screen- We are on our 8 hour epic journey back "home". I am crammed in the front seat with one of my Enrourage and the driver of the vehicle...For some God unknown reason, the entourage (which now includes the entire family with cousins, aunts, a baby, and an 80 year old grandma) does not wnat the a/c on!!!!! the older genteleman beside me, Honerines brother, is a lovely man. He is small and sweating profusely. His sweat is smeared all over my right arm, which is in so much pain from contorting to fit this awkward position I am in. The sweat and smell of him, is on me like ... read more

Stalkarrazzi- Sorry ahead of time of spelling..once again, sticky keys and rushing to get out of this heated box or sorts..the tenses may be here and there, as now is was, and past is present..read on and imagine. As I came back home for the "internet shop" last Saturday night, I was accosted briefly by our driver. He was obviously drunk as a skunk and couldn't stand upright-his breathe reaked of some local moonshine. he seemed dazed and confused. His little gang had consisted of some local hotel workers who of course asked me for $ to buy him a room. Funy how just a few hourse earlier, he didnt' even want to take me to the local train station to fix some times and prices so I could get outta here (there) on my own. ... read more

Its hot and sticky here...rains alleviate for a while..but back to the heat within seconds of it stopping...things are different here..much different..it's a land of extremes...extremely hot, extremely spice, exremely humid, extremely sweet, extremely stinky, extremely dirty, extremely sour, you get the drift...I went to visit ... read more

I was warned of this...feeling frustration and then having moments of sheer joy. It seems that Indian time is really something that I need to get used to, or accept. IT's always later, which really means tmrw if we have time..I have no real schedule, however, coming from Norht America, being idle, is not something we are used to. The heat is excruitiating as well. When I say I have a fan, I dont' mean a fast speed fan like back home..I may have a ceiling fan, that sometimes operates, and on only one speed! Last night, the monsoon rains opened up and let out a fury of water that was closed off like a raging damn, through the night...yes it alleviated some heat, but boy oh boy..that fan...GONE! No power throughout the night and ... read more

The sky is surprisingly clear as we board a boat from Nedumudi to Chambakulam on Midhunam 15, 1182 (Malayalam Era). It's a special day for the denizens of this backwater country, who believe it marks the installation of Krishna's idol in Ambalapuzha temple four centuries ago. The entire population of the riverside villages seems to be on the boats that travel upstream to Chambakulam to witness the snake boats (chundan vallam) in action. Yesterday’s monsoon wind had razed several houses in parts of Kuttanad, the backwater maze off Alapuzha. But that was yesterday. The natives, who toil in the paddy fields and the intertwined backwaters, have been waiting for this day, which launches the watersports calendar of Kerala. Chambakulam Moolam boat race in Pampa River precedes a dozen boat races, including the famed Nehru Trophy ... read more

I'm sorry that it has been so long since the last entry and sooo much has happened. India really shouldn't be just one country, it is more like a whole continent. Each state we visit is different and the cities are so different from the rural areas. There is so much variation in terms of food, clothes, landscape . . .everything. Our 3 weeks in Assam was such a good experience. The hospital was so interesting. There are currently only 3 doctors working at the hospital and they see over 200 outpatients a day. It works on a first come first served basis, so patients come very early in the morning and just queue. Some people are travelling upto 5 hours to get to the hospital! The medicine we saw there was very different from home; ... read more
