I am posting this recent trekking update after a long hiatus from Travelblog. To test my fitness level and to identify a good trekking club to do my futre short treks (less than 2 days) with, I signed up for the Madhugiri trek with Bangalore mountaineering club (www.bmcindia.org). BMC operates from Bangalore and conducts regular weekend treks of one and two day durations to locations in and around Bangalore. Some of the featured treks include Makkalidurga, Ramnagaram, Skandagiri, Ranagaswamy Betta, Shingani Gudda, Kudremukh etc. The club caters to the outdoor enthusiasts from the affluent IT, Biotech and management professions who, bored by the monotonous routine of the work week flock to do some hardcore action in the outdoors. Having joined a job and working in Bangalore for the last six months, I though I'll give it ... read more

This Sunday was Independence Day in India and we went to the flower festival in the Bangalore Botanical Gardens to celebrate. It’s nothing like the 4th, no fireworks or anything, but still pretty fantastic! I asked people who they were celebrating their independence from but was told no one in particular, they were just happy to be independent from someone. Maybe I look British to them. The gardens were wall to wall Indians and 5 white girls. There were so many people jammed into this place that there was a guy beating people back with a stick just to get the crowd under control. Of course, and for no apparent reason, we were escorted right past all the crowds of people and led directly into the park. I felt pretty horrible about it…but not enough that ... read more

The AirFrance flight from Paris to Bangalore was good. Minor bumps, etc. The plane was kind of rickety and made all sorts of creaking noises and the stewardess needs a new job. On the flight to Dublin my wine glass was kept full without me even needing to ask. On this flight, I spent 10 min trying to get the stewardess' attention and when she finally came over I raised my glass and asked for more wine. She took my glass and never returned. I had to flag down a different attendant. We went through this same procedure about 5 more times. And here I thought wine was their thing! Anyway, other than the judgmental stewardess the flight was good. It was business class so I got to lay down again! So finally got to India ... read more

Bangalore being my hometown is hence not a place that I have visited.. but I thought I should start with writing about this wonderful city before talking about the other lovely places we have visited. Let me start with the weather.. which is in my view the BEST in the world! The weather makes even other hiccups like traffic, bad roads and pollutions (temporary problems till our metro comes up) tolerable.. Some things I really love about Bangalore is the abundance of good resturants, the cosmopolitan people, and shopping streets and malls.. In other words there is nothing that is not available here which is available elsewhere :) For spots to visit in Bangalore, have a look at the photos posted .. I am not a party animal, so the (so-called) poor night life does not ... read more

We were in Bangalore for 3 weeks after Hyderabad (which was week 6 of our journey!). Week 7 was spent partially ill & 3 days running a VBS at a home nearby. The week after (week 8) we helped out with the VBS & the kids from the slum down the road at the BEC here. VBS's are Vacation Bible Schools where disadvantaged kids from the area get a big special extra program of activities, education, games, singing, dancing, acting, good food, new clothes & a well needed bath too! They're lots of fun!!! so that totally consumed our time & attention! Life was basically filled with alot of children & young people & was a great finale to our stay in Bangalore! hope you like the pics of these gorgeous kids!! ... read more

Bangalore is more than horrible traffic jam, temples and cows. New urbanization is coming and the city is changing its face. In a step elephant, some say... ok, but progress is a real fact. New information technologies, democracy, english spoken, prestigious academic centres and entrepeneurial indian companies are stepping at slow pace but determinated. Looking back, after a second visit to India, I recognise that Bangalore´s visit was a highlight in my study tour, of the Master in Global Management. In just one week, we learnt much more about India and its profound complexity than the knowledge we could learnt just through formal education. The local realities; diverse social backgrounds; political streams; ancestral knowledges and faiths, were constantly defeating any kind of management rule. Occidental views about logistic, marketing, operations, leadership styles an... read more

7/3/10: I had a great sleep but Jacinta slept really badly and her back was killing, this combined with stomach cramps made her feel like crap. Amazingly we arrived early in Bangalore getting there at 6:00am so with a full day in Bangalore we dumped our packs and walked through the quiet early streets on a Sunday morning. Nothing was open until 11:00am and by the time we walked the 5km we were ready for breakfast. Most shops were open by now and we found out that Bangalore was quiet a trendy town and very large stretching over a 40km radius. Things were getting hot so we decided to kill some time and watch AVATAR 3D on the big screen again. We enjoyed it as much as the first time and this time we got to ... read more

Bangalore! For vandana's wedding! After 4 days here finally have some internet! When we first landed i was confused before even going through immigration. There was a bin on the toilet seat?! They didnt check my bags for the chocolate i brought but rather held up bhawan coz he looks like a famous cricketer lol! Outside, from all those stories, i expected to be "hit by the smell", but bangalore airport is new & about half an hour or so from the city. So it was pretty much just like landing in brisbane airport! A friend of mine from delhi was always going on about "taking calculated risks" when crossing the roads in sydney. But when i saw a man walking casually down the right hand lane of the highway i immediately thought he was full ... read more

On a Friday night in Bangalore, I noticed two things that stuck in my mind. First, I saw groups of local women wearing jeans. Then later at night, a rat ran across my foot while I was sitting on my bed in the hotel room. The funny thing is I've been traveling in small town India long enough now to be more surprised by the women in jeans than by the rat in the hotel room. But Bangalore was very different than anywhere else I have been so far in India. Here India has embraced a more Western lifestyle, for better and for worse, making for striking contrasts between India's past and future. I left Madurai feeling refreshed and happy to be traveling again after a frustrating couple days in Kodaikanal. The station supervisor somehow managed ... read more

Hello Avid Readers of Nikki and Gail's JOINT blog (for those of you who thought this was Gail's first novel; we are writing this together). Last time we left off, we were about to embark on our second Death Bus but luckily a pleasant, safe vehicle arrived to take us to Bangalore overnight in luxury. Obviously, 'luxury' means peeing by the side of the road at 4am being eaten on the ass by mosquitoes whilst watched by a load of people on other coaches. Classy. We arrived confident in our first city and thought we'd leave the rickshaws behind and (stupidly) attempted to navigate our way through the streets to our hotel. Yes, hotel! Confidence is a must in these situations and we sauntered up to the four-star hotel looking like shit demanding to see the ... read more
