Hello everyone. We are in Bangalore, the IT capital of India. We arrived here around 1 p.m. local time on an Indian Airlines flight from New Delhi. It was about a 2 1/2 hour flight, and those of you like us who are used to the cattle-call service on U.S. airlines, would be similarly impressed. We were served a full hot lunch which included a cold veggie sandwich on a pita, a cheese sandwich on white bread, a hot toasted cheese sandwich with jalapenos, two mini egg rolls, and a small vegetable kofta (kind of like a hot-dog shaped veggie burger thing), plus two gulab jamuns (golf-ball sized sweet breads soaked in brown sugary syrup - one of my favorite Indian desserts) and your choice of tea or coffee. After the meal, the flight attendants (wearing ... read more

I hope that you are all well. I am in Bangalore, with the Henson family (friends from my home church in California that I visited during New Years) and plan to stay for nearly a month volunteering at a local school for children with (mostly physical) disabilities. I left the north about 4 weeks ago, visiting Shishu Bhavan (the orphanage where I volunteered in Kolkata) as well as my friends from villages in Maslandipur. When I visited Shishu Bhavan, one of the boys that, was to me, ‘the jewel of Kolkata’, was in the hospital due to respiratory problems. I ask myself WHAT was it that made me so attached to this little boy -- that has never said a word to me, probably doesn’t know my name, for that matter -- soo much that ... read more

Our next destination was originally not planned, but was worth the detour. No, we are not running out of money yet and Stephan has not begun another IT job. We went there for the Mark Knopfler concert. We had been sad about missing his tour in Europe but were very lucky that we managed to see him there. Your authors as well as their camera took a western break, so we cannot offer you any pictures for this city. We went to the Palace Grounds early and purchased the tickets, the cheaper ones for Rs 1000 (about EUR 20), we could not afford the more expensive ones for Rs 2500. This is a price you would consider normal for Europe or the USA, but we found it extremely expensive for India. Still, quite many of these ... read more

The bus ride from Mysore to Bangalore was much better than our previous one. We got a deluxe bus (more comfortable) and traveled during the day. All of the villages and towns we passed through were packed full of people. I believe the Karnataka election results were being broadcast over loudspeakers on the main streets and everyone was out to hear the results. As soon as we got back to Padmanabh's house we were whisked off visit Mahesh's family. They were very kind and stuffed us full of home cooking. His father is a rice merchant and the rice pancakes we ate were made from the rice that he sells. Both his parents didn't speak English and Bean and I still haven't picked up any Kanada so Padmanabh translated for us. We had an enjoyable evening ... read more

In February 2005, I spent a couple of weeks in Bangalore. This was my first trip and, although I was working, I did have two days in which I could do a little sightseeing. The first of these was spent investigating the Lalbagh Gardens in Bangalore and the second, some 30 miles north, in the Nandi Hills.... read more

Nato sem sel cez eno vasico, kjer so bili ... read more
