Well after travelling the length and bredth of South West India we have finally arrived at a place we call home here in India. We are back at Caetano's guest house, Mango Grove, Benaulim, Goa in exactly the same room as before, Cheers Caetano, you really know how to welcome us back :) We have been here for nearly two weeks now and have just really chilled out (you're thinking what the hell else have you being doing since leaving the UK!) We rented a moped for the day again and rode down to Palolem which was great. The Christmas celebrations in Benaulim have been great. There is a party atmosphere and people go to great lengths to decorate their homes with lights and other decorations. There is also a competition around the village to build ... read more

S'avonds staken ze miljoenen kaarsjes ... read more

It certainly is a long way to, from Mumbai anyway! we took a 12 hour overnight train from Mumbai. Mumbai train station was something to write home about! just as manic as the rest of Mumbai :) The train journey cost next to nothing and we met some really nice people who were staying in our compartments, they fed and watered us with some authentic Indian cuisine and Jess was nearly adopted by a young girl who couldnt stop laughing at her, she thinks her ginger ways! The best part of the trip was hanging off the train in the morning out of one of the doors watching all the beautiful scenery along the way, one of those 'feeling free' moments . . . So we have been in Goa for 3 days now. We are ... read more

My friend Nico wrote a great and funny article about Goa (and much more!). She published it in a magazine called "Goa Today". I read it and I couldn't help myself! I had to reply back to her! Goa is the richest state in the mighty country of India. This tourist mecca attracts foreigners in their millions, who enjoy the relaxed living and beach life the West Indian state is famed for. The peak season is from November to January, where the party seriously rocks! After arriving in Goa it's hard to believe that one is still in India as the maddening crowds, filth and squalor that can be so overwhelming at times in North India are suddenly a thing of the past. The state was conquered and ruled by the Portugese for 450 years, and only annexed by India in 1961. As such there is a discernable European feel to visiting, and the Goans are hospitable hosts who ensure a visit is something to treasure. The promotional face of Goa tourism is a ... read more

GOA: This old Portuguese enclave used to be 15 years ago the place to be for a great party nowadays when you arrived low season (as we did), there is no more. 23/08 to 28/08 /12: Palolem We arrived low-season therefore we found closed guesthouse. They will start again in late October. Nevertheless we enjoyed a good 2 days of sun and exploring followed by 3 days of Monsoon. The streets transformed themselves in rivers ! It was great to feel the intensity of the monsoon rains...! We met some lovely people in Palolem (from UK & France & we hope to see the French couple (Charlie & Fanny) in Paris in May....) There is two nice beaches further along. You do get some hawkers trying to sell jelleweries (self-made!?) but to be honest nothing original ... read more

I have recently turned 29 and one present I received was a list of ‘must do things’ before you reach your 30th. Although my friend meant well, the thought of reading a list that reminds you of all the things you haven’t achieved was not the greatest present. Thankfully though, I found I had already ticked off a good half of the list and felt that some of the other suggestions were either a little farfetched or just plain stupid, and therefore could be ignored e.g “give yourself a mains electric shock”??!! There was one suggestion though, that I was shocked I hadn’t already done; “Volunteer”. Yes, I had volunteered to help out in play productions or at a couple of friends’ events, however I hadn’t actually taken part in a volunteer project. The thought of ... read more

We finally decided to visit Goa after hearing so much about it, being the most visited place in India. But we had only 2 days to stay so I decided to visit South Goa instead of North and the usual Baga and Calangute. For me there is more places in Goa unexplored rather than the touristy ones. I like calm sort of place not the party places. So Agonda was perfect in our case. We took the Konkan railway route and what a journey it was. The train journey was itself a sight seeing tour, with the trains climbing the mountains and going on the top of it. We passed the Dudh sagar waterfalls on the way, with the train going over it. The view was spectacular. The falls is in itself a famous tourist spot. ... read more

India: While I was waiting at the Indian Consulate in Nepal for my visa, a girl asked me how long I planned to be in India. I said, "two weeks." Her reply was: "oh wow - just enough to get scarred." I came to understand what she meant. India is slow and hot - insanely hot. Most days were around 110 degrees. On top of that there are tons of people in the streets trying to get by you or begging for food or water. This was one of the differences in other places I had been. Most beggars to this point only asked for money. In India a lot of the beggars asked for food or water. I gave multiple half drank bottles of water to kids who asked for it when they saw it. ... read more
