Every Friday I go to Mapusa, a real little Indian city in this touristic Goa. But Mapusa is great because it really feels like the real India, with a little bit of tourist stuff mixed into it. I wrote about the Friday market before, but I just don't get tired of it. It is so colorful and full of life. Last Friday, as I came in, I was very surprised to hear Christmas songs... It was so strange. Of course Goa is partly christian, so they do celebrate Christmas, but for me Christmas comes with cold weather, less daylight, snow... So it is very hard to feel the Christmas spirit here. But apparently it is nice and colorful also in this part of the world. We'll see! In the market, there is all kinds of stuff. ... read more

Moikka Anjunasta Junamatka luksuksessa (ok halvimmassa mahdollisessa sellaisessa) sujui oikein mukavasti. Vessa oli kohtuu siisti, vaikka lahkeet olikin kaarittava ylos kastumisen valttamiseksi. Ylimpaan (kolmanteen) kerrokseen kiipeaminen sujui yllattavan hyvin. Molemat ateriat (illallinen & aamiainen) seka tee olivat oikein maistuvat.

Our day hike in the Periyar Tiger Sanctuary took us through hills, valleys and wide-open spaces. We saw large groups of black monkeys swinging through the tree tops and wild bison grazing on near vertical hillsides. We never actually saw any elephants but our guides were very worried about the loud swishing and huffing noises we heard whist walking through an area of 2 meter high grass. The guide carrying the riffle had his finger on the trigger at one point. Once we were clear of the area they explained that a big male elephant was wandering around in the grass very close to us. Our guides also pointed out one day old tiger tracks. In contrast to the day hike Tracy and I went on a short night hike too. We saw a few deer ... read more

Afin d'admirer la cote du Konkan, nous prenons un train de jour qui nous mene dansla region de Goa, au Sud de Bombay. Nous echouons sur la plage d'Anjuna, plage paradisiaque parmi tant d'autres aux alentours. Voici juste quelques mots qui decrivent si bien cet endroit: mer chaude, cocotiers, cocktails, fruits frais, poisson.... read more

Good afternoon blog readers! It's 12:51 here (so Dom you can go for your lunch break from 'work' if you were here!) We left Pushkar on a bit of a low since we'd been ripped off for our hotel (they made us pay 200Rps extra) and after telling them THREE times that we were leaving at 6am they still locked the front gates!!! Our taxi was waiting outside and we had to brave going past a rabid Alsation dog to knock on the manager's house! Eventually we got to the rat infested Ajmer station and our train was slightly late but we got into Jaipur station about 10am. We got a rickshaw to the airport where we were refused entry by some butch looking woman army person. Disaster. Apparently the airline (Deccan Air) we booked our ... read more

August 17, 2008 The day of hassle begins at the Mumbai Airport. We arrived at 4 am, my bag cover now has a rip in it, a Chinese student latched on to us and began talking our ear off! We needed a place to sleep for the day and hopefully grab a train that night to Goa. I called a place and we were going to get a taxi in to stay there. But I thought I would make a new friend at the AirTel counter! He seemed very happy and helpful and went out of his way to help us. Martin dragged us to a different area where he had a van waiting and he even came with us to a hotel that he knew. (TROUBLE!!) Well he was just feeding us info the ... read more

After the hustle and bustle of dusty Rajasthan and the chaos of Mumbai - Goa has been the calm that we needed to recharge ourselves in readiness for Nepal. Our train disgorged us at Anjuna station in the early hours of the morning and we groggily climbed into an auto rickshaw for the journey to our hotel. Our hotel was very nice with an inviting pool and a great value breakfast of eggs, toast and tea for 50p! Anjuna itself is very small and has just a handful shops and restaurants. The beach itself was gorgeous and deserted on most days. Best of all it was on our door step. Our days have not been very hectic at all and have mostly consisted of sunbathing throughout the day then watching the amazing sunset in the evening ... read more

Today we head to the Anjuna flea market. That's all on our plans for today - just want to take it easy. We hired the same driver to take us to Anjuna beach and back. Arrived there at about 11:30am. Stopped at Villa Anjuna to have lunch, just by the beach. After waiting a while for our order, the waiter came out to say that the chef had cut his finger and had to be rushed to the hospital and it will be at least 20 minutes before he comes back to complete our dishes! By now, we know what a “Indian minute” is! Their “1 minute” frequently spills over and lands up to be 10! So we decided to get some sandwiches instead. Anjuna was ok, it was packed with tourists. At times it seems ... read more

Chilling at the Nilaya Hermitage Finally the wedding celebrations had come to a close and it was time to move on. We had a leisurely breakfast down by the beach on another beautiful morning. The weather had been superb since we arrived; blue - very blue - skies, about 28-32°C during the day and humidity probably in the 40% range, dropping to a very comfortable 23 - 24°C at night. And these perfect conditions would continue for the rest of our stay in Goa. Donna had booked the four of into Nilaya Hermitage, a boutique hotel on a hilltop near Arpora village about ten kilometres north of Sinquerim Beach. The Nilaya driver picked us up at the Taj Holiday Village and we were soon checked in by the highly efficient Dorothy and shown to our rooms. ... read more
