Day 1: After a morning warmup at the monastary, I got off to a great start; feeling good, and the riding just got better and better. From what I knew, I was in for a 80km day, rising a couple of hundred metres, and ending up in a place called Jian Chuan. Basically my checklist for this first day looked a little like this: Wearing clothes: Yes Durability of Bike: Unknown Condition of Roads: Unknown Good information/maps about the roads: N/A Ready for an Adventure: Absolutely! Beyond the end of Erhai Lake and the reknowned Shaping Village market, I began a short climb away from the lake and off the end of the map I had... The road passed through spectacular terraced crops with (literally) thousands of workers in colourful clothing. I stopped for a quick ... read more

After 3 1/2 weeks living at Wuwei monastary, I have become highly proficient in eating Vegan food, trying to fly, living without electricity and generally making a nuisance of myself. But I yearn for some freedom and to break the grind. highly liberating to finally set out on my chinese bicycle and feel the wind in my hair. It is fairly likely that my bike will fall apart (again), I will get lost, and end up running back to the monastary (my safe haven)... but we'll see. Leaving behind cobbles and roadworks of Dali, my plan is to cycle to Deqin, the last post in Yunnan before the Tibetan border. The route I plan to take follows not the main highway, but smaller mountain roads through some of the remoter areas, of which I know very ... read more

Possibly my greatest aspiration when deciding to travel to China was to find an opportunity to learn martial arts in a traditional setting. When I heard about Wuwei Si, a buddhist monastary near Dali, where one can live and study Taichi and Kung-fu with monks, I had to check it out... On the side of ... Mountain, hidden in forest, I found an old wooden compound, nicely restored in its traditional form with a courtyard and small fountain outside the main prayer chamber. Several novice monks, tending to plants and burning incense pointed me in the direction of the training area out the back. There I found some young monks dressed in yellow green and orange robes going through a series of movements with several foreign students. I was soon invited to join for lunch with ... read more
