I got the wake up call from “Baozu Boy” at about 5:15am and threw my shit in the hall. On the way down I ran into some French geeky-looking guys who also seemed to be heading for the airport. I asked them if they were interested in splitting a cab but ended up changing my mind and going alone later on. But first I ate one last egg, baozu and tofu soup breakfast at my favourite café. It was delicious as always and afterwards I did my farewells to the kind couple that ran the place. I caught a cab on the main street and listened to music as I passed the grey-looking streets on the way to the highway. The city was waking up and it was beautiful in its own ugly way. I arrived ... read more

Let's Call it Shangri-La I was confused. I had bought an airline ticket from Lhasa to a city called Zhongdian but as I stepped off the plane onto the rainy tarmac, the sign over the terminal building clearly read Shangri-La. Well it seems that the Chinese government has decreed that Zhongdian is the real-life paradise that inspired the famous novel. It is no problem at all that there is little convincing evidence for this - if the government says its so, no one here is going to question it. A bigger problem is that Zhongdian looks much more like another dirty Chinese city than an idyllic utopia. I did read that there is an interesting if not beautiful old city district complete with mud-brick houses and roaming pigs. Not any more! The old city is a ... read more

We left Dali on a tiny minbus and headed north to Lijiang - a trip which took 3 hours. Lijiang is situated in a beautiful valley and is surrounded by mountains, including the 5500 metre high Jade Dragon Snow Mountain - the peak of which we didn’t get to see! The bus dropped us in modern Lijiang, which was the usual conglomeration of cement, dirt, bustle and sprawl. Not at all attractive. We caught a taxi the 3 kilometres to the old town and were dropped off at the entrance. The streets within the old city are too narrow for any traffic so it very peaceful - or at least the streets away from the centre were! The city was crisscrossed with canals and tiny bridges and was a maze of tiny cobbled streets. Lijiang was ... read more

We left Kunming by bus for a four hour trip, 390 kilometres north west to Dali, along the famous Burma Road, built during the Japanese occupation of China. The four hour trip ended up taking 6 and half hours due to heavy fog and a lost passenger at the lunch stop. We stopped for lunch at a service area which had dozens of buses waiting - I presume the lost passenger boarded the wrong one - it certainly wouldn’t have been hard to do! After the usual arguing between staff and endless recounting of the buses’ passengers we eventually left, minus the passenger, only to hit a very thick patch of fog. Thankfully the driver slowed down as visibility was almost non existent. The country side was very scenic and the road wove through a succession ... read more

Here are some more photos from the end of our trip in China, Lijiang and Kunming. Going to China To make things a little more interesting Einav and I made a short "recommenation" list for our friends going to China - this should get you to understand China a little better!!! here it is: 1. Toilets: prepare yourself for the worst, get ready to lihitapek a lot. bring a lot of pocket toilet paper. It is useful to have 3/4 pants and some tiger lotion for your nose to avoid to strong smell. 2. Weather: the weather in Yunnan changes a lot in this season, one day its very hot, and the other may be cold. Bring with you long sleeve shirts and a fleece, but a thin one that you can carry with you. 3. ... read more

We again carried the luggage first down the uneven stairs and the cobbled road, until the tarred road running up the Lion Hill began. The weather was bad, it was drizzling and Peter and Klaudia waited with the luggage under a tree until Stephan returned with a taxi. We had hardly arrived at the bus station, when somebody shoved Peter and Klaudia into a small bus, while Stephan bought the tickets. And we were gone, heading for Dali, where we could not spend much time due to the uncertainty concerning our visas. We arrived in Dali in the late afternoon, the bus suddenly stopped somewhere (we were definitely in Dali because we had already seen the pagodas, but this was not the bus station), but the spot seemed to be the right one, as a lot ... read more

A three hour bus ride north of Dali landed the four of us in Lijiang, a town which on the surface is frightening to us travelers. Imagine a Chinese-esque Disneyland-type town. Eveything looks fake including the cobblestone steets, the houses and even the people. We did manage to find a woman to put us up in her guesthouse which had an authentic Chinese feel. To add injury to insult, we bumped into EVERYONE we met in Dali (other isrealis, the austrian couple, the two American lawyers) which made me even more anxious to get out of town fast. And finally that night, adding to our frustrations, a massive rain and lightning storm knocked out power in the Old City. We made the best of it by chatting by candlelight untill we were sleepy. The mountain scenery ... read more
