Hi, Mama and Papa Naxi guest house is probably the best guest house in the world. This is not an exagaration, I have stayed in quite a few in my life. Several people that I have met during my travelling in China recommended me about this guest house. Normally, when there is one common opinion, it is normally true. Everyone was telling me about the family atmosphere and that Mama treats you like a real Polish mother, you should eat and a lot, until you explode. I have imagained Mama Naxi as a big and fat woman at her sixties, wearing the traditional Naxi clothes. To my surprise, she appeared as a thin lady with a short-cut hair, wearing regular clothes. She is the dominant figure in the couple and very energetic. Papa stays in the ... read more

Sat down to write this and realised its been two weeks since the last one.... seems time flies when you are buzzing around Asia. Since then we've gone to Saigon and explored a bit of Vietnam, flown up to Hong Kong and shopped till we dropped, then joined a tour group for China where we arrived last Tuesday. Im currently sat in a photcopy shop on their internet PC in downtown Dali, absolutely shattered after hardly sleeping at all last night, but I'll explain that later. Anyways, we last 'blogged' from Cambodia, and the day after took a 7 hour bus journey (3 hours longer than we'd thought) from Phnom Penh to Vietnam and Saigon. Should call it Ho Chi Minh city really, as the name changed after the communists took over, but I keep spelling ... read more

Ni Hao, In this period of the year, it is low season in China, but still, many Chinese tourists over here. Not so many foreign tourists. The typical Chinese tourist travels with an orgonized tour, in a luxurios bus. They travel from one tourist attraction to another with the bus, take a lot of photos and hardly walk. Here, in Dali, the women even sometimes buy a typical Chinese custom, wear it and take photos with it. Very kitschy. So Dali is a very touristic city with many shops, restuarants, etc. But, still, a very charming old city. The potential of the local Chinese tourism is around 700 million. The other 700 million are too poor to travel. While travelling, the relatively rich Chinese hardly see the poor villages and people around. Their situation is in ... read more

Well our first wedding anniversary was not what I’d call a ‘usual’ one - but was all the more memorable for being so different. After waking and exchanging both platitudes and gifts we got on with our day in Cambodia. This consisted of a beautiful breakfast & some last minute packing, a light lunch (I had the local delicacy ‘beef lok lok’ - YUM) and then off to Siam Reap’s international airport in our tuk-tuk (a carriage towed by a motorbike - the most common type of taxi in Cambodia). Now for such a tourist mecca, we had expected the Siam Reap international airport to be a bustling hive of activity. When we arrived our expectations were initially met as the airport was both new and smart looking. But something was missing. Where were all the ... read more

We went to see Ljilijana, Stevan's mom in China. She has been living in Beijing for the past few years. It was great to spend some time with her and see Yunnan province, which we did not visit during our first visit in May 2002. Our first visit was much easier than our second, mainly because we had Chinese-speaking friends in Hong Kong and Beijing who really helped us get around. Ljiljiana has picked us quite a bit of Chinese, but we still had problems communicating. Many Thais and Cambodians speak a bit of English, so it was easy to communicate in those countries. This is not the case in China, where even our efforts at hand gestures were ineffective, though they did seem to understand when I pantomimed a chicken and an airplane. We traveled ... read more

Hi, After 3 exhusting days of travelling from Laos, I finally arrived to Dali in Yunan province. While waiting for the passport stamping at the Chinese border, I was pushing with all the other people (in China acts as a Chinese) in order to save my rights. To my surprise, the policeman ordered us to stand in the line, otherwise he won't continue. Am I crossing back to China? The other evidence to the fact that I was back to China (except the stamp in my passport), was that on the night bus from Mengla to Kunming, the vomitting woman was travelling with me again (might it be the same woman that following me in all the buses and vomits???). In the first part of the ride (for about 6 hours), the road was very curving ... read more

Well, OK, we're not banned, or else I wouldn't be typing this. I obviously haven't been trying hard enough. However, Internet cafes do not seem to exist in this part of China, or least we can't find any. It's usually only a single computer in a coffee bar or restaurent. Though the connection seems decent, there is usually a long line of gringos waiting. We arrived in Kunming two days ago, which is a very modern Chinese city. I had forgotten how difficult it can be to travel in China due to the language barrier. Unlike in Thailand and Cambodia, almost no one speaks in English, which has resulted in some very entertaining conversations. Stevan's mom flew down from Beijing to meet us, and her Chinese is much better, but Stevan's and my 10-15 words of ... read more

While the opportunity to frequently travel overseas on business sounds very appealing to most people, it also has its drawbacks. Often you tend to just move from plane to hotel to office and then back in reverse and don’t get the opportunity to see much of that country or experience its culture. And so it was with China, where I made many visits in my commodity trading days between 1999 and 2007, but the majority of these were to visit our key customer, Cofco, at its Beijing offices. But when a couple of us travelled over there in February 2006 to finalise the negotiation of a long term supply contract and then to complete the ‘signing ceremony’, a very important part of the process in China, I suggested that for a change we do this away ... read more

26/1/06 Foggy and cold today, woke up at 7 and peep through the curtain, I went back to sleep again. But Ludwig insisted we should made the trip to ShaLaTuo for its market, ok... It was my idea yesterday, so... In 5 minutes me and Ludwig was down in the street looking for mini-bus, and it wasn't difficult. But the fare was a bit steep in this time of the year, 20 yuans! new year price. Chinese wouldn't mind to pay more in this time, and they rather used to it as they wouldn't bargain or argue for that. But I think the local authority should maintain a standard fare for transportation. Now it seem like those drivers can quoted whatever fare they like. Our bus ran through thick mist, I felt rather sleepy, but Ludwig ... read more

23/1/06 Misty and cold. our tourist information counter is out for service today, the 23rd of January, 2006! I was excite about it but on the other hand... Uunnggg... Worry! Because no one there for the work as receptionist, yes... Except me! Jacky out on holiday to see his girlfriend in Xian, and I can't refused him for taking leave. Ok then, 8:30, show time. We setup the counter table outside our office on the 4th floor, some sign has been put up on ground level, but everyone in the office complained it wasn't very clear in a sense that people wouldn't understand what it was mean with just a single "i" word. I won't listen to any of this as it was an international sign, but...sign for what??? Good question Tam! Anyway... The day was ... read more
