From Yangshuo we headed back to Guilin for one night prior to our train ride to Kunming. It was to be a 22 hour overnight train. It was nothing. We brought snacks, some noodles and reading material. Along with a nice soft sleeper compartment (4 beds), we were set. We arrived early morning in Kunming and headed to our hostel. Although it was 6 am or 7 am, there was a very peaceful and clean vibe about this city. First, it was clean on the streets and in the air, much unlike Guangzhou. Further, even as traffic was building up, it was still relatively quiet - all the scooters are battery powered so they don't make a sound. Like I mentioned in the previous entry, I was very surprised at the seeming consciousness of the Chinese ... read more

31/3/06 Finally I got to visit Lijiang, no...I'm not aiming at the Jade Dragon mountain or the TLG, I was coming to see an eco tourism project which is operated by an ngo, try to learn how its work. It was a long ride from Kunming. A 9 hours journey, first we drove through Dali new town. It was totally changed from what I had seem 10 years ago. A small city converted from a shabby little town. The road out from Dali new town seem familiar, the only different was the highway toll booth added. The highway by-pass Dali old city and we travel up road along the er-hai. And we approaching Lijiang after 3 hours drive. Sky was clear and I saw the Lijiang town from a distant at the end of the highway, ... read more

We started out on a small hike. 9 hours and 37km later we arrived at middle gorge. Knackered! Tiger Leaping Gorge, the deepest gorge in the world, is 70km North of Lijiang. At this point the Yangzi channels violently through the mountains carving a canyon that is so narrow in the middle that legend has it that a tiger once escaped pursuit by leaping accross. The best bit about it is that for once we were doing something entorely for its own sake. There are no temples to see (thank god), the villages along the way are quaint but minute and very sparsely populated (other than by mountain goats) and the scenery is stark. The gorges pastoral residents have long since stripped the land of trees and shrubs. It was really hard going. 37km is a ... read more

It may sound like a total cliche but every place we go in China is more eye-poppingly beautiful than the last. We thought Dali was about as oldy-worldy Chinese as we would see. Oh my God! Lijiang is so much better. Some of the centuries old cobbled streets are so narrow that you can touch the buildings on both sides as you walk down them. There is no traffic allowed into the old town, even bicycles must be walked. Every little wooden fronted dwelling that lines the maze of alleyways is selling something. Souvenirs carved from jade, wierd medicinal treatments, local Naxi style clothing, it's all on sale. Almost every lane is lined with weeping willows and accompanied by a tiny stream running along side or underneath some rustic stone bridge. These are not ordinary streams, ... read more

Visiting Dali was not on the itinery to Beijing. Thanks go to Paddy because it was a great stop! Dali is a small, ancient, walled city. Entering through the impressively imposing (I'm running out of adjectives to describe how nice China is) South gate, our first sight was the heaving throngs of Chinese tourists. It may be low season here but that does not seem to go for the Chinese, who arrive en mass, all sporting matching baseball caps being led by a tour guide dressed in local traditional Bai dress carrying a flag (and we thought it was Americans who had the monopoly on cheese!). I guess with a population of 700 million the difference between low season and high season does not appear obvious to us Brits. The streets are teaming with tourists, souvenir ... read more

Wow, Lijiang is even more beautiful at night. I am SOOO disappointed about my camera, the pictures at night are awful because I can't turn the flash off. All the roofs have lighting underneath, many trees are lit, and red lanterns everywhere! It is just gorgeous - I have been wandering the cobbled streets for about 2 hours, getting lost (just a little) and enjoying holiday. Last night I went to a restaurant/bar where they had live entertainment. Many were in traditional Naxi costume (the Chinese minority that lives in this village) and sang traditional music as well as "cover" artists for Chinese pop music. The crowd was so into it, singing along like you would to Neil Diamond songs in a bar - such a fun atmosphere! They also have several Naxi women dancing in ... read more

Well it's been a while, so I'm trying to remember everything. Li Xiao was still out of town, so some of Ying's students picked me up and took me to Sanqing Dui. It is an archaelogical site where they found many remnants from the Shu culture, estimated to have been around almost 5000 years ago, and they have found artifacts I think for about a 1500 year period (I'm not totally sure on that.) They found lots of old pottery and very interesting masks. They do not know what the masks are used for and they know very little about the Shu people, so it is all very mysterious and very interesting! The students didn't come in the museum with me, but I went with a diplomat from Africa and his Chinese friend. Afterwards, the students ... read more
