During the waiting time for the Laos visa I went for a visit to Lijiang. This town, about ten hours by sleeper bus away from Kunming is where the Naxi people live. The Naxi are one of the many ethnic minorities in Yunnan and Lijing was once the capital of the ancient Naxi kingdom. What is left from those times is the old city of Lijiang. Unfortunatelly it has been badly damaged by an earthquake in the 90's and after the Chinese goverment financed a rebuild they are now exploiting it as a tourist attraction. This means that nearly all the houses in the old city have been converted to souvenir shops... Early in the morning with no tourists it is still possible to anticipate the beauty and peacefulness the alleys once must have had. Less ... read more

When I was passing one of the narrow alleys in Lijing, an old man beckoned to me to come nearer. When I sat down next to him he started wispering to me. He showed me twelve steel balls and a balance and gave me the following riddle: One of the twelve balls is different in weight than the others. How is it possible to find out which ball is different in weight and if it is heavier or lighter than the other eleven balls by using the balance only three times? It took me a long time to find the solution, finally I found even two different ones. Maybe you want to try?... read more

From Zhongdian we took the back roads to Litang; a four day trip through several high alititude himalayan passes. It was very beautiful, the enitire time was spent with eyes glued to the horizon, one of many highlights were the 5000 metre high plains with herds of grazing yak near Litang. Photos below were taken through windows on a moving bus so you can imagine how good theyd be taken normally. I hope to come back one day and do this route by motorbike, it would be truely breathtaking. Any travellers reading this may want to disregard the LP advice that these roads are some of the most dangerous in the world. Those that we travelled (on public bus) were tarmacked and good quality, with no obviously dangerous sections. There were a few places where there ... read more

Kunming is the last major city in China before the southern border to Myanmar, Laos and Vietnam. It is the capital of Yunnan province. The people here have there own way of life partly because Yunnan is surounded by quite high mountains and thus has been more separat from the rest of Chiana during its history. One thing I definitely noticed was that people are not as active and bustling as elsewhere. Together with the warm and clear weather this made me enjoy my time pretty much. When I strolled the streets I came by many tea shops, selling the famous Yunnan tea. Another task for me in Kunming was to get a visa for my next country. In the ground floor of a hotel I found the Laos and the Myanmar consulate. It is quite ... read more

In all the other countries we've visited, one or other of us has known roughly what to expect. However my knowledge of China before arriving here was restricted to two, twenty year-old books, the obligatory "White Swans" ("Communist China - a decent idea sent haywire by bonkers Chairman Mao and friends") and "Riding the Iron Rooster" by Paul Theroux ("US writer explores China by train hassling unfortunate locals "). Add to this my totally unjustified assumption that "China is probably a bit like India" and you begin to understand that our 5 weeks in China have always been a bit of a mystery and got subtly ignored during planning sessions. Still, when you know nothing you learn fast, and 10 days in China has given us things to think about. If I wasn't looking for unspecified ... read more

Arriving in China was cool. Always going to be the highlight of our trip, it was nice to reach here at last. First stop was Kunming, which although there wasnt much to do, was a nice with a friendly atmosphere, and a good place to get our first taste of chinese life and the delicious chinese dumplings! A couple of days spent, then on to Dali. Dali is a purposely built tourist town (by the governement) and is very nice and pretty with good chinese architecture, though it feels slightly like disney china. Another couple of days here spent mostly shopping for the warm clothes needed for our himalaya expidition. Similar to Dali, was Lijiang, only bigger. Again very pretty, we shopped again and saw an ethnic minority show/dance which was a bit dodgy. Unfortunately we ... read more

31.10.05 - Qiaotao From Lijiang we travelled north about 80km to Qiaotao, the gateway to the world's deepest gorge - otherwise known as Tiger leaping Gorge after an old fable of the tiger escaping hunters by jumping from one side to another! It is approx 13,000 feet deep and China's longest river, the Yangtze, flows through the centre. There are 2 roads along the gorge, the low road designed for tours and people who want to take a day trip to see the gorge and the high road up in the Haba mountains for stupid people like us who decide to trek along the top! It's a 2 day hike but we started late on the first day so spread it over 3 days, stopping many times along the way to marvel at the spectacular scenery. ... read more

We have made it to China! We crossed the border from Lao Cai in northern Vietnam to Hekou in south west China (this was by far the warmest reception we have had at any of the border crossings so far, the officials actually smiled and welcomed us to China!) and took a 12 hour overnight bus to our first stop, Kunming. We weren't quite prepared for the cold, rainy city that awaited us and we immediately had to go out and buy hats, coats gloves etc! Luckily rainy days are rare and it has mostly been fresh and a bit cold but sunny and bright. We spent a couple of days in Kunming, which is a nice chinese city and we enjoyed just strolling about and getting used to being in a new country. Then we ... read more

Kunming was our last stop in China and it was a great place to end the journey. Although it is still fairly busy and polluted here it is a little more relaxed than the rest of the places we have visited, the people are the friendliest we have met in China and they don't stare at you quite as much, probably because there are quite a few foreigners here. We were staying in a really nice hostel here that served great, and very cheap, food and drink, we've cetainly filled up for our trip to South East Asia, Andrew has inherited another nickname, we now call him "Doughboy" due to his unquestionable ability, and desire, to eat as much bread and bread like products that he can get his hands on, he's a growing laddie, or ... read more

Feet blistered and scabbing....three days through the gorge ended in success! On a wet, gray morning we left Margo's cafe - bellies full of muesli, fruit and yogurt and a spring in our steps. Gerry recruited 3 British travelers to join us in our trek the night before. Clair, a 28 year old failed entrepreneur (in the nightclub business), and Dave and Andy, two young guys who just completed a 3 month expedition through Borneo, completed our 5 man hiking crew. Our packs weighed down with strange Chinese snacks and water, we tackled the gorge ferociously...errmmm..everyone but me. As it turned out I was the weak link; struggling behind the team trying my hardest to catch my breath as we ascended. Yes, I said ascended..up, up, up we climbed into the clouds. We watched the villages ... read more
