The last day dawned beautifully, cloudless and cold, before the sun came up it was very cold around 3 degrees. The necessity of socks, full skins, merino top, jacket, woolly hat and gloves in bed made a bit of a fib of the below zero rated bag and liner, another lesson, always carry a thermo safety blanket. It also doesn't help having the gentleman athlete bladder which had me, every hour or two, doing the three degree dance down the rows of tent mates, there and back without trying to disturb anybody, snuggle down and mercifully back to sleep. The joy of this beautiful morning was knowing that the hard work was done and today was a scenic 14.5 km jaunt, for those that were interested to maintain or gain some position, for the walking wounded ... read more

Day 5 Dawned A cool morning , everybody quiet and wondering how the day was going to treat them. For me Breakfast a packet of Hot porridge, then packed ready for the start. I feel quite strong after recovering from the little illness, day 3 . I am ready for the challenge 75 kms the Long March... The first two stages were reasonably flat which I managed at a fast march, expecting not to break into a shuffle till after stage 4 and maybe peel off a few of those broken down From stage 2 to 4, 20 odd kms was all uphill , the last 8 kms a murderous slope. Testing , gasping but making it. Checkpoint 4 being the highest point of the race, on top of a cold wind swept hill. Wow A ... read more

Goes like this A 40.8-kilometer journey through rocky grasslands, gullies, past river streams and local villages. After a chemically assisted good night's sleep, a packet of porridge, I was actually starting to feel quietly confident about the day. Amazing how it all can change, is this the great 'mind over matter ingredient.' Started stage 1 with a shuffle, yes was back into it. I have Changed the days food plan slightly, still having the required calories. Halved the perpet, and used more Hammer gels about 600 calories instead of the 1000 in the perpet I was using, no wonder I was getting ill. A day in the high country pastures under the mountains, wow, very beautiful scenery, and a day to enjoy it, cool, sunny. Coming down off the high country into the villages ,the streets ... read more

OK Day 3 Was a shit of a day. I will enter it with all its gruesome detail. 4 am Awake Diarrhea , Spewing, after a couple of such good days. The decision was made with myself to take it a little easier, which you can see by today's results, (84th) looks like a major crack up. Why is this happening? one reason could it be the result of pushing myself a bit hard yesterday. I think I am drinking enough water, taking enough Endurolytes, wouldn't be at all surprised if perpet is beginning to have an effect and make me sick, amazing energy food, but god its disgusting after 4 or 5 hours. Was unable to get any breakfast down, so hit the field with only a couple of gels and a hammer bar, not ... read more

Is Anybody out there ?? the weather and satellite troubles may leave me playing catch up and you wondering ...day 2 sees me Sitting hunched over a computer, cold, cramping, shoulders barely moving, I'm thinking I overdid it a bit, only slightly ! ! Hmm forgot the major rule and used the turbo shuffle a little too often. The golden rule," don't forget the big day". Tomorrow's approach will be to take it a tad easier, we really get into some of the perpendicular and altitude tomorrow. Today was called easy, road and track and basically flat. 39.2 kilometers over traditional Gobi Desert terrain, starting on farming land and moving across rocky open terrain with gullies, small bushes and grasslands. 39 Kilometers 6 and 1/4 hours, 3/4 hour better than yesterday, and sitting in about 53-54 ... read more

It was a very colourful and cheerful array of people as we gathered before we were bused out to camp one, an hours travel from town. Aaaaaah another snooze, racking up the rest before kick off.Grabbing a bed space blowing up air matt, meeting our tenties, all great fun, Six of our tent, 4 japanese, 2 poms had competed in the Sahara race together. Two girls, 7 men , packed a lot more loosely than I EXPECTED, certainly no place for any delicacies. Some great singing and dancing was put on by the locals on the desert floor, outstanding entertainment and it was there that it hit me, WOW, i'm here, lucky I had my shades on as I started to have a little blubber to myself. It must have all just caught up on me, ... read more

Bole China, a small city, Approx 500,000 people, 80 kilometres from the Kazakhstan border, with more construction going on than probably the whole of New Zealand put together. Somebody ordered a new city built, so there be the building of a new city. Thousand upon thousands of apartments, glittering shopping malls, green parks, visions of the next few years, and then the people will come, are coming, swamping the sometimes unruly hinterlands. It might be interesting to have a look at Tibet ? It really takes your breath away, when they decide to do something, it gets done. We will have fast trains across the country, ka ching done. Express ways from coast to western borders, thank you. A modern colonisation of Africa, job well in hand. As Hamish keeps saying you ain't seen nothing yet. ... read more

31 March 2013 Sunday. Our driver was waiting for us at 9 am and drove us to the Dunhuang’s new train station, in time to catch the 9:45 am train to Jiayuguan, which arrived there at 2:45 pm. This leg of the trip was backtracking to the northern Silk Road, but we didn’t want to miss Dunhuang, which was probably our favorite stop along the road. Jiayuguan was an important stop on the Silk Road…the end of the Ming Dynasty Great Wall and the final outpost, beyond which was the barbarian lands of empty desert. The fortress there was built in 1372 and expanded in 1539. Those exiled by the emperor for some infraction were taken to the gate facing west, and then kicked out of China. Exiles would toss a stone against the Wall to ... read more
