Day 1, No problem getting from Sheffield to Manchester and flight to London. Then London to Chengdu with super plane with intelligent glass windows! Cool! Arrived mid morning and met Lu's dad and sister, and 33 degrees heat!!! Lubblyjubbly!!! They took us to our hotel where I thought I'd lost my wallet, cards and all.....mild panic.......While Jerry tried to find BA lost property I rechecked and found it!! Phew. I then put on my sandals and Jerry, Yungian and I headed off to DownTown Chengdu. For no apparent reason my sandals decided to disintegrate beneath my feet! A bizarre experience! First priority was therefore new sandals. After which went to Sichuan Skytower for amazing views over the City, 280m up! After gingerly stepping on glass floor to view ants below we headed off to a historic ... read more

Hi All, Well when you're in Chengdu you've just got to go and see the pandas. It was lovely visiting at this time of year as the city and all the attractions are virtually deserted, well as deserted as a city with a population of 15 million can get. They are super cute! especially the babies up in the trees. It does make you wonder what they do with them all. I mean when they get older they cannot live together as they fight, giant pandas are very territorial. I was in the red panda enclosure and one came down the tree right in front of me. They are beautiful animals. I stayed in Hello Chengdu Hostel, new name for Sim's Cozy, which was virtually empty with it being spring Festival. The same couldn't be said ... read more

The number of high rise apartment blocks under construction in Chengdu, the capital city of Sichuan with a population of 10 million, and it's outskirts is mind-boggling. The fact that many completed blocks remain empty does not seem to be slowing down the construction. Keith and Doug counted over 100 cranes in a 30 minute road trip. We were told that young people cannot afford the apartments and, even if they could, wouldn't want to live in the ugly forests of tall buildings because they are too far from their work. We spent a fun morning at the Chengdu Giant Panda Research Centre that currently houses 132 giant pandas, both to study them and also to increase the panda population. We were told that this is a challenge because pandas tend to be sedentary and only ... read more

We arrived at the Xi'an airport and there was another travel incident with Marty and Laila who didn't get tickets at first. The rest of us got to the gate where they were already boarding--surprisingly--and we got information they would close the gate in 20 minutes. Five minutes later Marty and Laila came through security and started for the gate. We were so happy they got tickets! It was a two-hour and ten-minute flight and when we got there we met our new guide, Emily. She looked a lot like Catherine, our guide in Beijing. Once we got out of the airport, etc., we headed to the hotel--the Crowne Plaza in downtown Chengdu. We went out to dinner that evening and had another delicious meal. The next morning we had breakfast and boarded our bus with ... read more

We arrived very late at night in Chengdu and checked into 'Mrs. Panda's Hostel'. Linda and Maurice had a room while Lulu bunked in a dorm room for 4. Chengdu has a population of 7,000,000 and there are 30,000,000 in the province of Sichuan. It is a very clean modern city teeming with construction. The huge streets have 6 lanes and another 2 side lanes for turns, scooters and bikes. We woke about 8:15 and slowly got moving. Our plans were to head to the Chengdu Panda Research Base about 30 minutes away. We snacked in the taxi on dried fruit, cake and nuts from our stash while on the way to the preserve. It turned out to be a beautiful hot day. The giant pandas are not only a Chinese national treasure but are also ... read more

11 alcôves X ... read more
