We arrived in Chengdu airport at 5:30pm; the airport was full of activity, chatter, laughter and people coughing. We met Yashoda at the entrance and then we took a bus through the city. There were so many high-rises and the traffic was full on - most people were either riding bikes or scooters and there were so many cars. The trip to school took around half an hour; we got to school and found our hosts waiting for us in the court yard. Then we either walked or took a taxi/tuk-tuk to our new homes in Chengdu. When we got to our apartment we all found out that our hosts' English wasn't the greatest - the same as our Mandarin. So the introduction process was quite difficult at first. For dinner most of us had food ... read more

The first day of school is always strange but this would have to be the strangest first day I've ever had and I've had a few. I'm quickly finding that I have tons and tons of Chinese to learn and school should be a great place to do this, but just finding someone who can tell me what time school starts and what is in our food is almost impossible - almost. Well so far I've managed to get to school relatively easily but now no one seems to have any idea what I'm doing here or what they're supposed to do with me. That's how I ended up sitting in a random staff member's office with no idea of what's going on when one of the guys who came over here with me and can ... read more

I am sitting in the Cathay lounge at the Hong Kong airport. The sun is slowly setting slightly to the right of me Almost at eye level. Yes, they have tinted glass. The flight from Chengdu was painless and pleasant. I had good company beside me and the flight attendants were really good. Dragon Air is wholly owned by Cathay Pacific and trained the same. It is my go to airline in China on routes they fly. I was very fortunate in flying to China from New York. I was bumped up to Business Class from New York to Hong Kong. Again I am fortunate, they bumped me to Business on the return trip to New York from Hong Kong as well. Approximately 10:00 pm on Tuesday will be the landing time In New York. Time ... read more

For some reason I woke before 7:00 this morning. It was not a particularly late night but the afternoon and evening yesterday were definitely eventful and pleasant. About mid morning today it began to rain. Not particularly hard but noticeable. The sky is grey and visibility limited. On the 17th floor of an apartment building you tend to notice those things. Here in Chengdu most loose ends have been attended to. I am taking my hosts and work mates out for dinner tonight. It will be a traditional (for me) last meal in Chengdu. I have chosen one of my favourite restaurants where the owner and his wife have been good friends to me for many years. Likely other friends will show up as if by chance. Tonight or tomorrow morning I will pack. Much of ... read more

I am a little dozy today. We stayed up talking until 3:00 last night. Overall it was a bit of a lazy day yesterday with some good work getting done despite the growing humidity outside. Lunch was at my favourite Tibetan restaurant. My best friend of 40 years showed up and joined us. He normally lives between India and Chengdu spending some months each year in both places. Unfortunately another good friend had to leave yesterday for Taipei as his son is entering kindergarten for the first time next week. After lunch I paid a visit to the the local bookstore to see if there was anything interesting. Of course there was! I didn't buy anything. My bag is probably over weight already for the flight back to New York. Dinner last night ended up being ... read more

I only have four full days left to accomplish everything I need and want to do in Chengdu. There are several people I haven't yet seen and some individuals it would be good to meet with. Yesterday was busy. I ended up spending 3-4 hours explaining the relationship between art and Buddhism. Lunch consisted of several varieties of fresh baked breads, yogurt and fresh fruit. The mangos are very good here. They are grown in Yunan province south of Chengdu. Dinner was early last night but was spent at a favourite Tibetan restaurant. It was a large group of nine people with most being good long time friends. The evening ended late. There was a little rain yesterday morning and again early this morning otherwise the weather has been cool and nice with some high cloud ... read more

Up early, I think it was the sound of a mosquito that roused me. It was also an early night last - bed before midnight I recall. Yesterday was very productive. There were long periods of sustained undistracted work. Our Beijing friends had left just after noon. We skipped lunch and worked through 'til dinner. Grandma's Kitchen was the venue of choice for dinner. Back in 2004 I used to eat in the original restaurant down the street from the Jinjiang Hotel. The same restaurant where Trado had a permanently reserved table with his name on it. Trado has unfortunately passed away this last February along with the Lingtsang Gyalpo and Sangye Kyab - all within a two or three week period. Now there are at least three restaurants, but apparently with no relationship to the ... read more

Yesterday was definitely an indoor day. A huge rainstorm blew through Chengdu lasting well over 16 hours. It was accompanied by high winds with lashing rain at times flying horizontally. Trees were blown down and streets were a minefield of puddles up to your ankle. Chongqing was hit worse with flash flooding on the outskirts of the city. It finallt eased around 10:00 last night. I actually went out for dinner around 7:30 with friends and my shoes have paid the price. They predict more rain for today. Aside from weather, breakfast was a highlight yesterday. Two friends from Beijing brought bread, fruit and pastries from a local bakery and market. In Chengdu you can find a bakery almost on every block - often near a coffee shop. I have still not conquered the photo upload ... read more

It is definitely the end of the day. The morning was an attempt to work. However it was impossible with so many people around. My hosts daughter and mother in law returned to Chengdu. There were two friends from Beijing and another Tibetan friend turned up at the door. In the end their were eight of us with some trying to work and others insistent on distracting us from work. After some snacks, fruit, tea, yogurt, etc., there was breakfast, followed by a short break and then lunch followed by a three hour museum tour, immediately followed by dinner. In Chengdu food is always first. Everything else has to be scheduled around food.... read more
