Finishing off my fourth stay in Shanghai. It’s a big enough city that a return visit always provides for plenty new to discover and, with the city constantly changing, to rediscover. One place I tried to visit last year, but was closed for a rework, was the Jewish Refugee Museum. Reopened now, the museum is housed in a synagogue originally constructed during one of the first waves of Jewish immigration during the Russian Revolution in the early 20th Century. It sits in an area of Shanghai that was the center of a population that grew by about 18,000 as Jews left Europe. China was one of the only countries in the world to accept Jewish refugees. The neighborhood became the center of Jewish life in Shanghai prior to and during the early years of WWII. According ... read more

About two months ago, my friend and I began planning our summer. We were to visit China’s Yunnan Province, cover Vietnam and then go to Japan for the famous Fuji Rock Festival. Unfortunately, as they say, "The best laid plans of mice and men oft go awry." And so they did. Work and employment plans, in this case… My friend had decided to stay and work, completing a degree in between, while I realised I could no longer afford going to Japan. Things change, plans change – everything is constantly on the move. At first, these facts, this reality, were really depressing. I couldn’t overcome the thought of failing in some way, in the ‘great scheme of things’. I had so much hope for this trip! Why? Why did things not go as planned?! Was it ... read more

Kineseren kom hen til os ... read more

May 27 - maybe a bit city tour and a relaxing Thai massage after? Ha - Wat Phra Kaew, A.K.A, Emerald Budda - seriously don't know how to pronounce that ... But it must be very crowded over there.. have to get up really early to avoid the crowd!! - Grand Palace - Thompson's House - I am more interested in what happend to him rather his house. Rumor has it that one day he was just walking on some street in Malaysia and suddenly disappeared and no one saw him thereafter, and in the same year his sister being murdered in USA... he used to work for CIA... um... feels like one of those hollywood conspiracy moive.. ha - China Town? I do wanna go check out, but if it's too hot or too crowded.... ... read more

This will likely begin and end with food. As I had bought some bananas last night that served as a sort of breakfast but decided that I had better have a relatively early lunch. It was indeed fortunate that barely 100 m from the Hotel is a place called Shanghai Grandmother which supposedly served hearty food. So that seemed as good as any for a top up. I ordered some cold eggplant and garlic dish to keep up my vegetable component - there was virtually crushed garlic on top. However this was nothing compared with the pork and black fungus and garlic. There were only about five very thin slices of fried pork in it, quite a lot of black fungus which was okay, but an unbelievable amount of sliced garlic (to the extent that I ... read more

Shanghai…..Could this place be any more different from the rest of China??? When I first rocked up at Shanghai I was lost for words and by the time I left I had many very carefully selected words for the place. As you can probably guess I’m not in love with Shanghai but sadly for all the wrong reasons, although putting this to one side it has it’s own unique qualities and is a city unlike no other. Whilst approaching Shanghai by bus it was apparent things were going to be very different here from the rest of China, sitting in the traffic beside me were Rolls Royce’s, Porches and all manner of BMW’s and Mercedes, sorry Martin not many Volvo’s apart for a classic 340 in beige with a mix of different coloured replacement panels! As ... read more

Shanghai-NOUN: economic powerhouse of Mainland China; located in the southeast; largest shipping port in the world; estimated population...22 million Shanghai-ed: VERB:to kidnap, usually by drugging, for service aboard ship...to induce another to do something through force or deceit I've been Shanghai-ed. Without the drugs or the coercion but I know something happened and I'm still reeling. This gleeming, futuristic metropolis knocked me off my feet and I'm still recovering from the whirlwind romance the past few days. As I previously stated, China wears many masks. In the massive "family" that makes up this country of wonders...Shanghai is the naughty one. The attractive one in the family who pouts her lips, seduces with her eyes, makes one commit frivolous acts, is sulky when she's unhappy and is viral in her ectasy. You just can't resist her. The ... read more

Welcome to the wedding recap blog. So much to share. First the background. Jiyi works with Mark and they’ve known each other for 3 years. Melody is his lovely bride. They asked the kids to be the “flower children”and for Mark to be the Best Man. We went dress and tuxedo shopping for the kids with Jiyi and Melody and Nathan even got a hair cut before the wedding. You probably won’t be able to tell, but he really did. The day of the wedding, Emily, Mark and I set out on a white shoe mission for Emily. Shoes and tights. I was pretty confident that even though we were unsuccessful in finding white shoes in Emily’s size at the 3 stores we visited in our nearby mall the previous week, we’d find the shoes at ... read more

On the weekend I celebrated "a quarter of a century", so a few friends and I went out for dinner at KABB Bar & Grill In Shanghai and out to a club called Club G Plus. It seems like everytime we go to this club it's "eventful". It's funny because people were coming up to us- just because they wanted to....maybe because we're foreigners? Anyways, they were all really nice and just wanted to be around us. I think that will be as close to a celebrity as I get! Do I feel any older? No, not really...age is just a number....right? According to my fortune teller in Hong Kong, 2010, the year of the Tiger will be a good one for me, So hopefully 25 and the year of the tiger go hand in hand. ... read more
