Day 26: Driving to Lang Mu si Well, here we are in Langmusi, pretty high up. We are in a nice hotel, will find out the name eventually, although we are the only guests and, indeed, the only visitors in this mountain village which has been improved and extended for what must be a massive tourist influx in summer. It seems the visitors are Chinese nationals who arrive in throngs by the coachload, plus a sprinkling of what would once have been hippies, nowadays backpackers or possibly New Age? The effect is rather like being on the former set of a major Wild West movie, watching the tumbleweed roll through town. All the same, we are privileged to be here out of season, in glorious sunshine, surrounded by snow-capped mountains, and at liberty to wander at ... read more

Day 27: Exploring Lang Mu Si Not very big on the map, this village is about 100 miles or so to the south of Xining. We woke at 7 am to yet another glorious blue sky, and could see persons already circumnavigating a prayer-wheel house on the skyline, about half a mile away. They were walking around it at quite some pace, up to eight or nine people mostly, and every now and then one or two would peel off and head for their day’s work. Many people choose prayer beads to keep count, but there is also a sort of abacus attached to the side of the building that can be updated on each circuit. The whole place was very quiet by 8.30 last night, although in Leisha’s place we were able to get beers ... read more

Hi All... We visited Namo Gorge today which is at the back of the Sichuan Monastery so we had to buy another ticket. We were lucky in that we caught some of the monks saying their mantras and banging drums, playing the trumpets and banging cymbals. But unlike the Gansu monastery, where we were encouraged to walk around the temple, we couldn't go inside but just look from the doorway. The walk to the gorge goes past some caves and goes along side a small stream for a way. It's easy going, pretty flat, in fact the hardest thing was avoiding the horse muck and litter, no one seems to care about the litter everywhere. I had to reposition myself for some photos because of the rubbish in the foreground. It doesn't distract from the beauty ... read more

Hi All, So tried something I had never done before horse riding. We did it through Langmusi Tibetan Horse Trekking. It cost 270 rmb, which isnt bad really when 1 hour on a camel cost 100 rmb. We met in the morning at 10 am to be given a crash coarse in horse riding, although there are no helmets available, and then we lead our horses through the town before mounting. We followed the river out of town towards its source. We ventured through some jaw dropping scenery. We came across nomads, yaks, horses and other wildlife along the way, the peace and quiet was wonderful. We were accompanied by two Tibetan men who sang some Tibetan songs along the way. Once at the river's source we stopped to for about half an hour so that ... read more

Hi All, We asked a monk yesterday what time the sunrise is and he told us 7am, which seemed a little late to me. After a quick intenet check it said 6.20 so up early and walked to the hill in the Sichuan Monastery to catch it. We got there at about 6am . Well guess who was right the monk or the internet? You might know it was the monk.??. The sun may rise above the horizon at 6.20 but that doesn't take into account the huge mountain in the way.. Enjoy the photos Jah Bless... read more

Hi All, After a delicious lunch of mutton dumplings and a rest we visited the Sichuan Monastery which is huge. There are many young monks here studying at the various colleges within the monastery. Unlike the Gansu monastery in the morning where monks assembled to pray and we could view inside the temples here the temples were closed except one where a kind monk let us have a quick look round. Like this morning these monks appear to be of the yellow hat sect as we saw pictures of the Dali Lama. After wondering around we headed up to the hillside overlooking the town to watch the sunset. On our way back we popped into the small mosque just outside the monastery gates. The mosque has a wonderful Chinese style minoret and a small pray hall. ... read more

Hi All, A long bus journey from Lanzhou to Langmusi, 10 hours, but the road was new and the scenery stunning. The only bus we could find left Lanzhou at 7.30 am from the long distance bus station near the train station. The bus goes to jiuzhaigou but stopped to let us off. A young man in his car took us the rest of the way. The town is split in half with a river running through the middle which is the border between Gansu and Sichuan. There are two monasteries, one on either side of the river . This morning we visited the Gansu monastery. The monks are of the yellow hat sect and we were lucky enough to catch them at prayer, banging drums and cymbals and blowing trumpets while they were chanting the ... read more

Langmusi, another little place we added at the last minute. Only a 3 hour bus ride away from Xiahe. Langmusi is a sleepy border town, between the Gansu and Sichuan provinces. Its actually much quieter than Xiahe; less cars, less traffic, less people. How refreshing for China. Believe us when we say we barely saw this in China. I would actually as far as saying this was the smallest 'town' we encountered altogether in China. Everywhere here is within walking distance. The restaurants, hostels and shop wooden fronts look like they've recently been revamped but still hold that small town vibe. A lot of development is going on here at the moment which may bring a lot of change to the town. We just hope its not for the worse as we loved the slow pace ... read more

Déjà pendant notre trajet ... read more
