We arrive into Xiamen at about 10 at night. A man on the bus recognises Emily from Scott's bar (she has been working behind it for some of the summer) so we ask if he can recommend any hotes and he calls around for us and finds us a place where we can share rooms for around 100 yuan a night. We get a cab with him which takes us to the university district. We hang around outside and the man calls the hotel on his phone. We stand on a street corner and debate whether or not to buy some fruit. Eventually a surly looking women with a child on her shoulders comes to find us and lead us back to the “hotel.” The entrance is down a dirty alley way (there isn't another kind ... read more

Superiamo il ... read more

Here I am, back in Xiamen again. I'll just tell the story of how we got our apartment and some of the things going on outside our window every day. We arrived in Xiamen on the 19th of August 2009. Josh had arranged to start working at Yingcai school, off the island in the part of Jimei district called Xinglin. Although we had told them our arrival dates, the school apartment wasn't ready yet. We didn't want to live in the school apartment long term anyways, because it didn' t have a kitchen, so we wanted to search for an apartment, after staying the night at Josh's new boss' place. The second day we were told that the apartment was ready, so we went to put our bags there before starting our search. The apartment was ... read more

I've arrived safely in Xiamen! The train journey wasn't as bad as I had expected and to be honest it passed pretty quickly! I actually met a couple of Chinese guys before I even got on the train who worked in Xiamen so they were able to give me the low down on the place! They were desperate to practice their English as I was also keen to practice my Chinese! The living conditions on the train were pretty cramped and it was very very loud at night! Obviously I was sleeping directly opposite an older man who snored through the night! They warned me about the dangers of travelling alone in China and that I should be very careful if I go to Guangzhou. They did however follow this with a "but its okay you ... read more

Well I had planned to keep this blog up to date on a daily basis, unfortunately the computers in the place I'm staying run at a snails pace and therefore its rather difficult to sometimes even get online!
