Yay! Got up early in the morning, ready for a Sri Lankan family reunion in Ratnapura. Before we left Kandy, our couchsurfer-friend Ajith took us around to the Botanical Gardens in Kandy. Again, the prices there were a bit of a rip-off, 650 rupees for foreigners and 100 rupees for locals. Anyways, in we went. No more than 200 metres from the entrance we were suddenly met by two monkeys, sitting peacefully on the path. They looked a bit like the vicious monkeys in Bako national park on Borneo, so we didn't want to get too close. Cute they were though. The first thing of note in the garden was the orchid house. So many different kinds of orchids, some looking like ballerinas, some like butterflies, some like stars - and all different beautiful colours. I ... read more

In Colombo now and off to find our first Sri Lanka-couchsurfer Got a mobile phone number with Dialog, which I'd heard was supposed to be the best, and also turned out to be the most popular, if you count the number of Dialog shops available - it only cost 110 rupees (100 for the card, 10 for two passport copies), but it wouldn't be activated until the next day. I also bought 200 rupees worth of talking time, and that easily lasted the whole trip. Definitely worth buying! So good to have. But for that moment, the card still wasn't activated, so we had to use a phone box to call Yashasvin, our new host. That was rather cheap too, the call cost about 15 rupees. We had to take two buses, the 103 to Borella, ... read more

Finally time to travel with my boyfriend! After saying goodbye to my cousin on the 14th (with a whiskey-chinese new year-hangover), we were all packed and ready for our adventure on the 15th. Step one: waving down a taxi for the airport. While walking the 100 metres from our apartment to the road (where we can see taxis but they can't see us) we saw no less than four taxis passing by, but when we made it to the road we had to wait quite a long time before we finally got one. Check in, baggage check, easy peasy, got to Gate 7 with time to spare. As we sat there watching basketball and ads for "Cats and Dogs 2" on the public TV's we kept an eye on the information screen for our gate. It ... read more

My cousin from Belgium and her friend are visiting at the moment, and they wanted to go see some beautiful nature near Xiamen. Cool, I thought, we can go to the tea mountains! Last I was in Anxi with my parents I had met a young girl (21) at the bus station, she told me that her whole family were tea farmers, and invited me to visit her village. So I thought, what better opportunity to go than with my cousin! I called her up, she was very happy to here that we were coming by, and she recommended that we stay at least a day, because the area is very big and beautiful. So we prepared to go in the morning at 9.30, and expected to be home the next day, so I recommended that ... read more

Here I am, back in Xiamen again. I'll just tell the story of how we got our apartment and some of the things going on outside our window every day. We arrived in Xiamen on the 19th of August 2009. Josh had arranged to start working at Yingcai school, off the island in the part of Jimei district called Xinglin. Although we had told them our arrival dates, the school apartment wasn't ready yet. We didn't want to live in the school apartment long term anyways, because it didn' t have a kitchen, so we wanted to search for an apartment, after staying the night at Josh's new boss' place. The second day we were told that the apartment was ready, so we went to put our bags there before starting our search. The apartment was ... read more

Arrived in Bangkok from Vientiane at about 8 at Hualomphong railway station. Got a taxi to Koh San Road, with the meter it was only 75 baht. Once at the Koh San road area, I'd been told to look for Rambutiri road, because there was supposed to be good and cheap guesthouses there, and the street is close to Koh San without being as busy. I started walking in a random direction, then asked for directions and found out that Rambutiri actually was the road on which I was dropped off by the taxi. Too easy. Walked down the west-direction of the road for a bit, saw a big sign saying "Lamphu guesthouse, rooms starting at 200 baht", I followed the sign into a nice green courtyard and got a room with shared bath for 200 ... read more

Got on the night bus from Luang Prabang at 18.30, at first the bus was practically empty and everyone had two seats, but in the last few minutes the bus filled up very quickly. I got the very back seat, behind lots of luggage and chairs, so no one came bothering me :) But after lots of people got on from the roadside after the first few kilometers, I think I was the only one left with two seats. Lucky me! My luck couldn't last forever though, I had to have some bad luck happen to me - lost my cloisonne hair clip from Beijing (no catastrophe, can get a new one next time), lost my new villager-made seed belt (the one I'm wearing in the Luang Prabang photo on some stairs between two golden dragon-snakes) ... read more

Off to Luang Prabang! Might be repeating myself a bit from the last post, but what the heck :-) I also decided to write the price of everything, as it might be nice to know for other travellers doing the same route. Got on the bus from Luang Nam Tha in the morning, tuk tuk from town at 7.30 for 10000 kip, got a bus ticket for the bus leaving at 9.00 at the station for 80000, no problem, bus wasn't full at all. It left at 9 sharp, no Laos time here. The bus was rather empty at first, but it stopped along the road at loads of small villages, and people got on with their heavy sacks of stuff. One old lady walked by with a blue sports-bag with strange chirping-sounds coming out of ... read more

Right! Trekking! Nam Ha valley trip, Green discovery (www.greendiscoverylaos.com) Met the group at 8.50 at Green Discovery's office on the main road in Luang Nam tha, got in to a tuk tuk to our starting point. The group of 8 was a nice blend of nationalities, a New Zealand couple, and Irish guy, a Vietnamese born German resident, three Swiss girls and myself. Everyone was pretty young and in relatively good shape. We had two guides, Ket and Air, and both were really knowledgeable and nice. Ket is a farmer when he doesn't go trekking with people, and Air is kamu-tribe. We walked straight into a Lanten-tribe village, very interesting, especially coming from China. Apparently the Lanten people are originally from Mongolia, but fled to southern China during the first Opium war, and when the second ... read more

Ok, new to blogging here - I'll just try to describe my trip overland from Kunming to Bangkok, as it might benefit other travellers :-) I flew in from Xiamen to Kunming on the 4th of January, landed at 13.40 all ready and set to go. I'd heard a lot of conflicting information about where the bus station with buses going to Jinghong was, and I didn't really want to take a taxi there - so I decided to find the train station, as I'd heard that there would be a bus station next to. I caught bus 52 from across the parking lot to Chun Cheng Lu 春城路, from where I walked to the train station (after getting lost and asking a couple of people for directions). There was a huge bus station next to ... read more
