So today was my first day of school. I just had my first class but it was a K3 class so I only teach for one of the two hours. There were 6 students in my class all around the age of 8 or so. Since it was such a small class we ended up quickly going through everything that I had planned for the day. Jennifer (the substitute Chinese teacher) sat in the class and didn't do too much but help me the whole time (which I was very happy about). She didn't have too much that she needed to translate, just every now and then. I taught them "What is your name?" "Where are you from?" "How are you?" and "How do you feel?" I explained to them what these questions are in Chinese ... read more

Jadd continues to be sick. Yesterday the ambulance came and gave him an IV (the needle looked almost like a real needle, and the stuff that the IV fluid was coming from was like a baby bottle in a plastic bag, it was kind of freaky). Fortunately Sheena (the girl who Cat moved in with who is Chinese) was there to translate for us. Then Sheena went and got Jadd some medicine to reduce his fever by making him sweat. After he had taken the IV he was feeling a lot better - he took a shower and even walked down to the corner store to use the phone. We found an English channel on the TV and he watched it for a little while and ate an egg. Then we both fell asleep pretty early ... read more

Last night a bunch of the old teachers who are mostly all leaving to go back home or various other places in the world besides Dalian got together and all had dinner together before they left. Three of the new teachers were invited so we all joined them. We had an awesome time, went to this little kabob place and ordered a ton of kababs (they're probably a quarter each). The waiters and waitresses bring out little boxes that have fires in them and a little grate on top so that you can sit the kabobs on the fire and cook them yourself. It was really awesome. We all had some Chinese beer too (not too bad stuff) and I got to meet a bunch of people here which was also cool. Then we went to ... read more

From my notebook that I had on the planes with me: So, I had promised that I would write an entry before I left for China but as it turned out I didn't have time - even for sleep. A few of my friends and I stayed out late on Thursday night as I hadn'ts een some of them in quite a long time. I then spent the rest of the night packing. I hope I brought a lot of things I need, I already know I left behind my Chinese notes (for whatever stupid reason) but hopefully what I do have will help me. My flight from Raleigh/Durham to New York went well but then my flight from New York to Beijing got delayed an hour. Fortunately I met a nice young man in the ... read more

With our group numbering four now (myself, Louisa, Einat and Yael), we boarded the 9am train to Dali expecting the worse. But, we managed to snag 4 seats together and pass the time playing cards (hearts!) and listening to music from my mp3 player. I was able to make friends with a nice Chinese girl, especially after I joked with her that we were going to get married. Her reply was "you're too tall". The last 30 minutes of the train ride was rough for me as it was all in a tunnel at a very slow speed! We found our hostel easily and picked up another Isreali on the way. That makes 3 Isrealis, one Dane and one American (me). We found out quickly that many Isrealis were at this hostel (Guest house #5). Since ... read more
