A hunting we will go. High ho the merrio a hunting we will go. (Something like that.) Cat and I went to get train tickets yesterday. It was exactly like going back to India with the Indian train stations except you're surrounded by Chinese people instead of Indians. There are boards up that say where all the trains are sitting in a big huge hall. You have to get your bags x-rayed to go into the hall and then over to the left there are large windows where you get your tickets. I'll take a picture next time I go and post it along with some of the other pictures that I've taken recently. People in Chinese lines are just like people in Indian lines. Some people are patient enough to actually stand in the line ... read more

Today was my first day finally ordering food at a restaurant all by myself. I said some things slightly off but they were close enough that the waitress could understand me and just repeated it to make sure. I got everything I wanted too: rice, a dish called "gong pao ji dier" (which is spicy pieces of chicken, pepper and nuts). I even managed to ask for a take-out box (da bao) which she politely packed for me. I was really happy. Most of the time when we go out the Chinese teachers order for us or Cat orders (her Chinese is a bit better than mine is) but this time it was just me and I got what I asked for! (I'm really happy about that.) Food around here is really cheap. If you go ... read more

Dalian is really a great city. The view from my window is beautiful and makes me strangely calm to look out. There is another large building across the way, facing my building. In between the two buildings there are a bunch of houses that all look the same and I can see the playground of the nursery school right below my window. There is also an overpass off to the right of the two buildings so there are constantly cars going by on the overpass. On the little sketch that I have provided my building is number 9. Craig, Russell, my Chinese teacher Gladys and my boss Ernie live in building number 10 and across the street from them is the football stadium. The large building that I can see is behind the block that I ... read more

I finally added my first picture to the website. I will hopefully be able to add more very shortly. I also rearranged my journal entries as they were out of order. Today I got most of my classes organized for this weekend so I won't have to do all of my lesson planning tomorrow. Also I met with Jason this afternoon. We went out to lunch and he taught me some Chinese cuss words (although he said not to tell anyone that he taught them to me). He also came over to my apartment and showed me how to use my washing machine (finally!). Turns out I can't fit the thing in my bathroom so I have to do it in my kitchen and since there's no drain in my kitchen I have to use my ... read more

So much has happened since I've last been able to log-in to this. I had a shrimp incident a couple days ago which really upset me in the beginning. I went to a restaurant and asked for some tea and jaod-zi (what the Northerners from the states would call "dumplings") but they gave me shrimp. (In Chinese the word for shrimp is "xia" and the word for tea is "cha", they must have misunderstood my pronunciation.) At first it really made me upset. Everyone in the restaurant was staring at me and pointing and it wasn't the time of day to get dinner, just the time of day for a snack (so it was very strange for me to be having shrimp in the first place). I decided to come back to the school (where I ... read more

There is only one country that I've ever really gotten homesickness in before now, Costa Rica. In Costa Rica I got homesick really badly. So much so that I lost my temper and insisted on being allowed to go home. But the reason was primarily due to my relationship with the family that I was staying with. I was staying in very bad conditions and the family was treating me like (what others later explained to me) a slave. Once the school where I was taking Spanish classes found this out they changed me to a different home with a wonderful woman who I will never forget and I had a great time. In the end it was extremely hard for me to leave Costa Rica. I've only been here in China for two weeks and ... read more

The day before yesterday I did my laundry myself for the first time. I really kind of liked doing it, it's like working out, gives me some time to make peace in my brain. I noticed that my clothes are a little stiff when they dry but all I have to do is beat them and then they're like new. Cat also loved the smell of my hand cleaned clothes, she kept commenting on it many times. The only drawback to doing your own clothes is that your hands aren't used to the motion of rubbing themselves together so I got two tiny cuts on my middle finger knuckles. I'm going to do some more laundry tonight so we'll see how it goes. Yesterday I had three classes (all two hours each). First we had a ... read more

Today was my first day that I finally started to feel like I fit in. Jason (a Chinese man who works with the government for the school) took me to get my bus pass. So now I can get on the bus and look like a local (with the pass at least). Then he took me to get this really official looking Employment card (it looks like a red passport with English & Chinese on it) because I have my Z Visa (working visa). Apparently this card is half way to becoming a Chinese resident. (Wow!) I really enjoyed spending time with Jason and suggested that maybe we exchange Chinese for English classes. He was really energetic about doing this but I will see if it actually happens. I also learned that my Chinese classes will ... read more

Today has been an extremely tiring day. I woke up to fireworks. And when I'm talking about fireworks I'm not just talking about our normal fireworks. For whatever reason these fireworks were three times louder than any fireworks I've ever heard. Then there was a bunch of chanting and a bunch of jets flying over head. No one seems to be able to tell me why. Apparently they have a lot of fireworks during weddings but I don't know whether or not there is a wedding or not. There is a very large possibility that I will be living by myself for at least the next 3-6 weeks. Since Jadd is leaving tonight. This is kind of a bummer but I suppose it has its advantages too. I got used to staying in my own place ... read more

Last night I went with Cindy (another Rockies Chinese teacher) to Wall-mart after class. I didn't buy anything, just walked around with her. She talked to me and told me the names of some things. Then she walked me over to this other extremely huge department store with a grocery store in the bottom. She had to leave but they had everything there. It was a little more expensive than Wal-mart (so I probably won't go there again) but I did get a few things - some rice, 1/2 gallon of real milk (western style), Rice Krispies (the cereal), peanut butter (Skippy), 1/2 gallon of green tea (this awesome brand that they have here) and some sugar. All for about 9 dollars. When I came back I fell apart a little bit for some reason. I ... read more
