Monday, 22nd April 2019 It was Monday when I decided to join a day tour to the Great Wall sections at Mutianyu, about 75km north of Beijing city. The day tour is the most convenient option since it covered the cost of land transportation, gondola rides, admissions as well as a decent lunch thrown in. Along the way, our guide cautioned that things at Mutianyu might get crowded this morning given that the Forbidden City is closed today. Visitors were expected to throng the walls instead. Amidst the minor transport hiccups in the morning, I thoroughly enjoyed the day excursion. The crowds at the Great Wall were thin (thank god) and clear weather accompanied me throughout the day. We were given about two hours to explore the wall proper to take in the best views of ... read more

It was an early start for our trip to the Great Wall. We had booked it the day before through some random travel agency. The pick-up spot was in front of the McDonald's just across the main road near where we were staying. I think we had to be there at about 6:30 am, too early for me. We didn't have to wait too long before the driver arrived. We were in a smallish mini van, which already had some people in and we set off to collect some more. After that we left the city and drove for a while. I can't remember how long, maybe an hour or two. We knew when we had arrived as the traffic became horrific. We were dropped in the carpark and the guide lead us to the main ... read more

It's our final day in Beijing and what better way to finish off our visit than with a trip to The Great Wall. This was a spectacular moment for our entire group. We all felt so privileged to be in the presence of The Great Wall. According to our tour guide, "Lily", we are all now Great Girls & Boys now that we have climbed The Great Wall. The trip was an hour and a half by bus outside of Beijing, and as we arrived to the park everyone was very anxious and eager to get to the top of the mountain where the wall stood. A short shuttle ride, a 10 minute walk uphill, and a 5 minute gondola ride got us to the top. I was surprised that the wall was so crowded with ... read more

It's 1:42 AM and I'm writing a blog. My hotel's power just cut out. Boo. Yesterday was amazing. My first Great Wall tour guides didn't work out. They said they decided my hotel was too far for the sections of the wall I wanted to see. So I contacted Miles Meng (recommended by Lonely Planet) and organized my driver less than 24 hours before he met me at my hotel. Glad it worked out. He picked me up just before 8 AM and we drove quite a bit to get to Mutianyu. We drove through many small towns. We kept passing small dim sum places and I wanted to stop so badly. I just completed coursework at PSU for Food Politics and Immigration/Citizenship issues. While driving around, I saw so much degradation of their lands. Lack ... read more

This blog probably should be called 'The Great Wall' or something like that, but unfortunately there was toboggan, and that kind of makes a better title. However, I made it! I woke up every hour this morning until six am, and then decided to get up, wriggle into my clothes, and was out the door in five minutes. Booyah! It took me a while to find the bus station from the subway, but the map found online was considerably better than the one I used to find my tickets. I had to walk a mile or so past the bus station to a yard filled with coaches. I took bus 867 at 7am to Mutianyu. The journey cost 16yuan (£1.60) and took about two and a half hours, but I made friends in the queue with ... read more

Part of the tour involves visiting the Great Wall, but this time Mutianyu, a completely different part of the Wall from the part I went to the first time. Mutianyu is much more touristy. On the plus side, this meant it was a much easier day - there is a cable car up to the wall and even a toboggan down for the more daring (just like the Great Orme!). The stretch of wall at Mutianyu also lends itself to a half-day visit: it is fairly easy-going for most of the walk, then at the end there is a massive climb up with a huge sense of achievement when you reach the summit (and a couple of enterprising salespeople, selling medals and bottles of Champagne, to help everyone celebrate making it up there, plus a photo ... read more

Of all the planned sights and destinations on our trip, the one that I was most nervous about was finding the Great Wall. Most people who have been to the Wall would probably be laughing right now. It is like 3,000 miles long, after all. Reading travel blogs and reviews, it seemed like there was no way to avoid seeing the wall... "Just ask your concierge to book you on a tour tomorrow!""Find the 'Great Wall' tourist bus that leaves every morning at 9am.""Just pay a taxi to take you there.""It's hard to wander south of Tiananmen Square without encountering the many buses going to (the Great Wall at) Badaling." - Fodor's Beijing O yes, I've read them all. But if you read this blog much, you will know that I don't like to do things ... read more

Day 26 (Mon 1stOct) Another night train took me from Shanghai to Beijing although this one far more successful. A soft sleeper and not a hard sleeper meant a bigger bed and more space, 4 in a room not 6 and the luxury of a door. It was spot on. On arriving in Beijing the girl on the opposite side to my bed decided to let on she spoke English, shame she didn’t do it 11 hours earlier as those trains do get pretty boring. We got chatting and headed off the train and into the Subway. We exchanged details as is happening a lot more now with people, as I’m getting more used to the travelling thing. Arrived at the correct Subway and made my way to the hostel after going the wrong way initially. ... read more

Friday 14th September Next day same thing picked up at 7am for a trip to the Ming tombs and Mutianyu section of the great wall. First stop was the Ming tombs which in itself is an impressive sight. Basically all but 3 of the 16 Ming dynasty emperors are buried here in underground tombs located 40km north of Beijing. Next stop the great wall (Mutianyu). I recommend not going to the Badaling section as all the Chinese tours stop here as its the closest section of the wall to Beijing. Mutianyu has less tourists and a little more picturesque. On arrival you can take a choice of two sections to get you the wall. One is a cable car for the elderly, the other is a chair lift. Once you get to the top via The ... read more
