... read more

Of course we had to go and visit it when in Beijing. We even thought of doing it when in Datong but the part of Great Wall over there is not apparently very impressive. The initial plan was to go twice to different parts of the wall to have a better feel of the place. One of the seven ancient wonders of the world, right? The choice of places where you can visit Great Wall of China is quite big and it could be a little bit confusing what to do. Tours usually get to go to the Badaling section of the Wall and they even take you to the Ming Tombs on the way so kind of understand the package deal people take. So where is the catch? We thought that everybody would try to ... read more

Today is the last full day in China and I really wanted to go out with a bang. One of the largest attractions and one of the largest structures in the world is the Great Wall of China. I planned on visiting a section called Mutianyu which is located in Huairou County 70km northeast of Beijing. The Mutianyu section of the Great Wall is connected with Jiankou in the west and Lianhuachi in the east. As one of the best-preserved parts of the Great Wall, the Mutianyu section of the Great Wall used to serve as the northern barrier defending the capital and the imperial tombs. Built mainly from granite, the pass at Mutianyu is an appropriately unique section of the Great Wall. 7 to 8 meters high, and 4 to 5 meters high with crenellations ... read more

Date Thursday 2nd September 2010 City Beijing Climate low 21c - high 32c An action packed day today, with a visit to the Mutianyu section of the Great Wall, a visit to the Summer Palace and a close up look at the Olympic buildings. We had decided to organise a private car for the day as there was no other way to fit it all in. Our driver, John Guo, was put on to us by a friend working at the New Zealand Embassy in Beijing who has used him as well. He charges 600 Yuan for a full day. We drove through some awesome countryside and it was evident that a lot of money had been spent preparing for the 2008 Olympic Games. A fair distance out of Beijing, in what felt like the middle ... read more

Y NO FUNCIONAN!!!!!

Hi everyone, This is a long blog so I've split it into smaller bite size pieces. So much to do in Beijing. The Train Trip Today was the start of our 5 days off. I had already purchased the tickets from the local agency for the D train to Beijing from Tai'an (Taishan). We have been on some dodgy trains in our travels so we weren't sure how this trip would be. But right from the get go, it was smooth sailing. The train station in Tai'an is tidy, clean and orderly. People sit in the appropriate section. Mind you, they still barge through the crowd as if they had to race for their seat. But as all seating was assigned we strolled leisurely up the platform and found that carriage 8 on our ticket happens ... read more

Friday (3/27/09) Great Wall day! I had done some research and sought out advice and we agreed to go to Mutianyu -- a village with an entrance to the Great Wall--rather than a more popular but very crowded entrance. Mark had been to the other (Badaling) and said it was crowded, full of vendors all along the wall and just not as peaceful sounding as Mutianyu. Instead of buying a package tour, I just rented the car and hired a guide, and told the tour company we wanted to set our own agenda. The deal was I had a place I wanted to go for lunch that had been recommended to me. If you buy these packaged tours, you often end up on tours of factory outlets and you eat at pre-arranged restaurants. It worked out ... read more
