After a mildly disappointing trip to the tourist infested Forbidden City, it was with a little trepidation that we boarded the bus for the three hour journey to the Great Wall of China. We'd heard quite a few reports from people who had to battle their way through hordes of tourists and almost as many locals selling everything from t-shirts to coca-cola (of course). The hour long detour to avoid a horrendous traffic jam on the way didn't do anything for our sense of anticipation. But, thankfully, we were to be proved wrong. A million times over. It was stunning. Everything you could imagine from the deserted pictures in the guide book. After a brief spell where we ascended to the wall itself with the rest of our group from the hostel, we were virtually on ... read more

Aug 20th - 24th So apart for the eyes, what else did we get up to in Beijing? Now settled in our nice hotel we could properly explore the bustling city centre of Beijing. Our hotel was close to a busy shopping and eating street called Wangfujing which had a mix of ultramodern and very traditional eating choices. We frequently ate in a busy food court always packed with locals and which had an overwhelming choice of tasty and otherwise ‘interesting’ foods. Even Jen, who is not the greatest fan of Chinese food enjoyed eating here. Also on the street was a famous Peking Duck restaurant which we tried. The restaurant was spread over five floors and on arrival you were allocated to one! When you ordered a duck and it was cooked the chef wheeled ... read more

Do you know what is so great about today? It is Tuesday and I don't have to take the health test after all. No poking and pricking and sucking my blood. Ha Ha Ha. Since my future is looking bright now, let's look back to the past and I'll post some pictures of Beijing. I know everyone is just dying to see them so I won't talk about Dalian till I can give a brief on it. I was so excited to get my own hotel room at the Super 8. It wasn't like a real Super 8, but more like a really nice, privately owned hotel. And just around Beijing in general. This w... read more

What are the expections for a first time visitor to the greatest and largest construction- site known to human kind? To walk along man-made fortifications, that are reputed to be "the only human-made structures discernible from the moon", and are an amazing 16,000 miles long? Whose planning and building began some 3,000 years ago, one thousand years before the birth of Christ, and still being improved by the Ming Dynasty less than 350 years ago, while Louis IV reigned supreme over France? (The 16 Ming Emperors alone contributed defensive works made up of some 4,500 miles, and they are the best preserved.) How is it possible to describe a super-fortification, whose bricks alone, could create and "encircle" the earth in a 16 foot high wall? Whose millions of hand-chisseled-stones snake over thousands of miles, atop some ... read more

Eight days of Beijing Insanity down, only twelve more to go... CTLC's Beijing training for new participants of our Shenzhen teaching program began 8 days ago - and it already feels like I've been here for a month! Our training is intense with a capital TENSE and that means 10 hour work days for me and my coordinating/assistant team and no real days off for 3 weeks. Our days start with a 7:30 a.m. team meeting followed by a 7:45 rush down 12 flights of stairs (because the hotel elevators keep clogging up and breaking down) where we meet up with the 95 teacher-trainees gathered in the hotel parking lot. At 7:50 we parade this mass down the street to Beijing University where we split off into two groups and go to opposite corners of the ... read more

He who has not climbed the Great Wall is not a true man. - Mao Zedong Yesterday, Robbie became a true man. __________________________________________________________________ He who wins at cribbage on the Great Wall is the almighty cribbage champion FOREVER! - Robb Modica Yesterday, Sarah became the almighty cribbage champion. _________________________________________________________________ It was obviously a big day for both of us yesterday. We headed out of Beijing in the morning and drove two hours northeast of the city to get to a section of the Great Wall called Mutianyu. This section of the wall is supposedly a little less commercial and offers a more "authentic" experience of the Wall -- (though most of the people in our tour group took the cable car to the top - sigh -). We, however, decided to climb to the top, and ... read more

Hello, I am in Beijing now, sleeping fine and learning lots of interesting things--like how women have to pee in a hole in the ground and public bathrooms don't provide toilet paper (I thought that opening would spice things up a bit). We climbed the Great Wall today, which was quite interesting...tons and tons of people there. I can't upload a photo yet b/c I am on a public computer...sorry. Tonight we went to a traditional Chineese dinner and amongst other more edible things, had frog, chicken feet, soft bones, and pork skins in jelly (I didn't eat any of them but Peter B did--I think he took a liking to the feet!)...We also saw three boys who were training in martial arts and they were like the matrix, spinning and kicking in the air, they ... read more

The Great Wall is the single greatest tourist attraction in China, and to my mind one of the greatest in the whole of the world. After spending the best part of two days in some of the less developed parts of The Wall, I can honestly say it’s one of the most exhilarating things I have ever done. After hearing “horror” stories about the hordes of tourists and massive over- commercialization at Badaling, I decided to hike the section of wall between Simatai and Jinshanling. This is a popular choice for many backpackers as most of the cheaper accommodation houses and hostels in Beijing arrange day trips with a drop off in Jinshanling in the morning and pick up later in the day at Simatai, thus taking the worry out of arranging public transport. There is ... read more

Last night we went to a beer garden to watch the World Cup game, but I was too tired to stay out all night after the train ride the night before that left me mostly sleepless. I forgot to mention that we met a racecar driver on the train who offered to teach me and Chuck how to race when we get back to Shanghai. We talked to him at about 5am when we got out of bed - about two hours after I managed to finally fall asleep. I made it to the Great Wall today, despite a few setbacks. Our tour, which was supposed to start at 8:15, was leaving from The Peninsula Hotel. Unfortunately, the cab drivers didn't know what that was, so after about 40 minutes of trying to figure it out, ... read more
