From my last entry I reckon it was pretty clear I was quite bushed from my day in Beijing and on the whole it was unlikely there would be many things I'd be willing to get out of bed for the next day. Unfortunately however The Great Wall of China was on that list, we were setting off at 6am, so had to make the effort to drag myself down to the bus that morning. There was talk of a picnic so had stopped off the night before at a local conveniance store to buy provisions but found it not that conveniant at all. In my tiredness, (I'm never at my best when lacking sleep), I became quite frustrated that the shop sold bread but not butter, (scotching my hopes for Marmite sandwiches... was carrying a ... read more

The Great Wall of China, one of the greatest wonders of the world, was enlisted in the World Heritage by UNESCO in 1987. Just like a gigantic dragon, the Great Wall winds up and down across deserts, grasslands, mountains and plateaus stretching approximately 6,700 kilometers (4,163 miles ) from east to west of China. With a history of more than 2000 years, some of the section of the great wall are now in ruins or even entirely disappeared. However, it is still one of the most appealing attractions all around the world owing to its architectural grandeur and historical significance. After having a rewarding experience getting to Chichen Itza on our own via public transportation, we decided that we could do it again in China from Beijing to Mutianyu. From our guest house near Wangfujing we ... read more

My writing may not be as clear as it might be, because it's 6:50 in the morning and a bunch of other backpackers and I stayed up late talking and playing the kind of games I might've played in a bus during elementary school (still fun). This was the same group that went to the Great Wall with me yesterday, which started at an area called Jinshanling and, after a 10k walk atop the wall, landed us in Simatai, one of the steepest (and therefore coolest) parts of the wall. The entire trek was amazing, moreso after living so long in Japan where open land is rare and the mountains looming. All that could be seen from the Wall were miles and miles of hills and dried up waterways. When we got to the end of ... read more

BIJING We recently took a short trip to Beijing and liked this clean, safe, friendly city a lot. We “packed it alllllllllllllllllll in” enjoying every minute! Of course having dear Tannia along, as our friend and guide, helped us out a lot… Please be sure to scroll down, if necessary, to read the captions that accompany some of the images. The highlight of our trip was seeing/hiking the Great Wall! Luckily we found a place, two hours from Beijing, where there were no tourists and the wall has not been refurbished. We stayed at a wonderful hostel—where we looked out onto a lake with the wall towering behind it…phew! (getting to the hostel is another story…yes, sometimes you just stand along the road, bargaining for a ride, and then ramble along with happy strangers and ... read more

Mainland China, scary, or so I thought. I had a great time and concurred the wall! The weather was shocking really cold one minute, snowing even and then blazing hot the next day. Sightseeing in China was a sight its self. I went down to Tienamen square, I had never seen anything like it, so Chinese and my word the tour group! You couldn't walk a 2 meters without being engulfed to a mass of red baseball caped flag flowing Chinese tourists! I tough that was bad until I went inside the Forbidden city, where all the emperors lived, and there you couldn't move a meter without the tour groupes. Not fun and i tough actually not that interesting. The Great Wall made up of all the cities short comings. A group of us got together ... read more

Thursday 24th June Weihai – Qingdao To date we have been extremely lucky with our ferry journeys it has all been smooth sailing and as a result we have slept well and recharged our batteries. We arrived in Weihai at 745am on a foggy morning, disembarkation was somewhat disorganised so it took more than an hour to set foot on Chinese soil for the second time on this adventure. No problems with immigration and although there were large crowds outside the terminal we had only one beggar both us on the way to the cab stand. Chinese cab drivers are a delight, they always seem happy, laugh all the time and never try to cheat you unlike their Korean brothers. The driver delivered us to the bus station charging just $3, taxis are so cheap in ... read more

I’d been staying with a friend in Beijing. He was teaching English there and had a flat just out of the city center. One night before we all went out for dinner. After the meal I wasn’t feeling too great and decided to head back to his. It was only about 9pm, so he put me in a taxi and told the driver his address. But when the taxi got there the fare was about three times the amount that it had been when it took us out in the first place and I realised he was taking the piss in a big way. So I tried to contest the price with the help of my trusty phrasebook. It wasn’t going well and it turned into a bit of an argument. At this point a man ... read more

As I sit on my tatami floor, in my room warmed by the kerosene heater beside me, I shake off the cold and remember my latest escapades, this time in China, the most populous country on Earth. I got a cold virus towards the end of my journey in the Middle Kingdom, and was more than a little anxious to return to the land of verdant rice fields and endless mountains. Still, I look back with fondness on my recent adventures, this time shared with my family. Yep, the whole gang (mom, dad, bro and sis) made the trip to the Orient to see me and check out the views. China is a very big country, and we wanted to see as much of it as we could. To that end, we set out on a ... read more
