Ray & I will be traveling to Myanmar (Burma) leaving Charlotte, NC on Friday, Feb. 6, 2015. After 8 days in Myanmar we go to Bangkok, Thailand then on to Laos, Cambodia & Vietnam before returning on Wednesday, March 4. Ray and I are thrilled that my sister, Diane Bleday, who lives in Plymouth, MA will be joining us in Thailand. Diane will help me write the blog and will be adding pictures of her own. My personal interest in travel stems from attempting to follow in her footsteps as she has been an inspiration to me in many ways, including travel. However, Diane is way ahead of us in number of countries and travel experiences. Diane will have much to add to the blog but more important, will be a great companion to have with ... read more

The jewel of Southeast Asia, Yangon has been out of the world for decades, but is now rapidly entering into the global tourist map. The unique blend of fascinating Buddhist temples and majestic British colonial architecture makes it a superior destination. If we add to that its location on several rivers, the proximity of underdeveloped beaches and a large number of well kept green areas all around, this city has all one could possibly ask for! And since it has just started awakening, it is the perfect moment to visit and get a direct view of how Asia once was. Urbanism Yangon is one of the best examples of a garden city. The city center has a perfect orthogonal street grid, with elegant buildings and beautiful temples, while the periphery is dominated by green areas dotted ... read more

This Website could Not cope with inputting Myanmar so Not much hope for me getting it right ! We are now at the end of this short but beautiful journey. It has been different from many though I'm not sure why. Perhaps its the delightful people, the amazing geography and sights , its po!itical history , or maybe just that for so long its been a closed country. It is a country full of contrasts trying to cope with an influx of tourists but without much of the infrastructure or know how to support it. A country of around 55 million with 8 ethnic groups dominated by the Burmese and boarded by two great nations India and China not to mention Thailand and Laos. India and China have influenced the culture food and development of Myanmar ... read more

Myanmar, considered as the-want- to-visit- country for many tourists around the world for several decades back, is slowly opening –up . Great news for adventure travelers including myself in love with rich history, culture and traditions of that area. During the stop-over in Myanmar, the only city I could explore a bit was Yangon and here is how I saw it for the time being in the end of December 2014. Walking the streets of Yangon (the biggest city in Myanmar) was like walking though the historian past of the country and National Geographic - all in ones. From the golden pagodas, various markets selling everything from local fruits/ vegetables, though the textile and clothing typical for the area and the jewelries – great idea for yourself or presents to the beloved ones, food and tea ... read more

They tasted odd, but I was ravenous and thought nothing of it, plunging my hand back into the foil packaging for a second and then a third salted cashew. It was my first purchase in Burma, from the shop in the domestic departure lounge of Yangon Airport and I was a little foggy after connecting through Singapore on a 1am flight from Melbourne. All I wanted was food, so eat these funny tasting cashews I would! Then, as my eyes scanned the scene before me, I decided to see if I could decipher any of the information on the packaging, trying to determine if they were a local product. It was at this point that I noticed a rectangular yellow sticker affixed to the top of the packaging, right where I tore the packet open. In ... read more

As any kid growing up in Rangoon, (or Yangon as it is called now) going to the zoo was always a treat. At that time my father's cousin was director of the Rangoon Zoo, as it was called then, and we kids would have VIP tours escorted by the zoo's staff. Passing adolescence into adulthood, with work and family commitments, a great number of years passed and visits to the zoo became less and less frequent. In 1978 I left the country to seek my fortunes abroad, but after a period of 9 years overseas, I felt homesick and went back to visit my homeland. Since then, I have returned on regular trips to see old friends and relatives. In 2001, on one of those trips I took my American friend Ken to Yangon. In between ... read more

Just a short distance away from the city's main tourist attraction, the great Shwedagon pagoda, is the Chauk Htat Gyi pagoda where you can see the third largest reclining Buddha in Myanmar (indeed, the world). This remarkable statue is housed in a large metal-roof shed and is highly revered by the local people, the majority of whom are Buddhists. Although it is not as well known as the fabled Shwedagon, it is fast becoming a tourist draw. I have been there several times, my last visit being two years ago. The very impressive 65 meters/214 feet long image is wearing a golden robe; the right arm of the Buddha is supporting the back of the head. It is decorated with very expressive colors, white face, red lips, blue eye shadow, golden robe and red finger nails. ... read more
