Ray & I will be traveling to Myanmar (Burma) leaving Charlotte, NC on Friday, Feb. 6, 2015. After 8 days in Myanmar we go to Bangkok, Thailand then on to Laos, Cambodia & Vietnam before returning on Wednesday, March 4. Ray and I are thrilled that my sister, Diane Bleday, who lives in Plymouth, MA will be joining us in Thailand. Diane will help me write the blog and will be adding pictures of her own. My personal interest in travel stems from attempting to follow in her footsteps as she has been an inspiration to me in many ways, including travel. Myanmar, considered as the-want- to-visit- country for many tourists around the world for several decades back, is slowly opening –up . Great news for adventure travelers including myself in love with rich history, culture and traditions of that area. During the stop-over in Myanmar, the only city I could explore a bit was Yangon and here is how I saw it for the time being in the end of December 2014. Walking the streets of Yangon (the biggest city in Myanmar) was like walking though the historian past of the country and National Geographic - all in ones. As any kid growing up in Rangoon, (or Yangon as it is called now) going to the zoo was always a treat. At that time my father's cousin was director of the Rangoon Zoo, as it was called then, and we kids would have VIP tours escorted by the zoo's staff. Passing adolescence into adulthood, with work and family commitments, a great number of years passed and visits to the zoo became less and less frequent. In 1978 I left the country to seek my fortunes abroad, but after a period of 9 years overseas, I felt homesick and went back to visit my homeland.
