First of all, this market is officially called "Bogyoke Market" after General Aung San the father of Burma's independence. 'Bogyoke' is the Burmese term for General. However, it is still known as Scott Market even after all these years. The place is supposed to be named after J.G. Scott, an administrator during the British rule of Burma. Known for its colonial era architecture and inner cobblestone streets, the market is one of the major tourist attractions in the city of Yangon, formerly known as Rangoon. It is also a popular shopping center for the local people as it has a number of stores selling medicine, foodstuffs, garments and foreign goods. The market is believed to have been built in 1926 during the British rule of the country when it was known as Burma. Needless to say, ... read more

October 30th, 2014 After being dragged away kicking and screaming from Ngapali Beach we finally made our way to Yangon, last stop on the adventure...sad to see it come to an end, and with spending the extra day at the beach it only left the balance of this day and most of the next before we flew back home... After sorting out our hotel and waiting out a torrential rain storm we decided to get our bearings and wander around the neighbourhood, slowly making our way to the Bogyoke Aung San Market (formerly known as the Scott Market). The covered market is huge; full of textile, gold, jade vendors along with spots to eat, pretty cool...if you're looking for last minute souvenirs (and especially jewelry) this is the spot, although to be honest with the exception ... read more

Yangon (Rangoon) My most recent trip was thanks to two consecutive public holidays in Hong Kong. I love a good public holiday, and it’s always a good excuse to squeeze in some travel! This time it took me to a place that had been on my radar for a long time, and finally I was able to make it a reality! For a while, it was off limits due to political unrest, but thankfully the doors to Myanmar are open and I gladly entered. My visa had been sorted in Hong Kong, and off I flew to Yangon, about three hours by plane. Before I go into Yangon details, there were a few general things I noticed whilst in Myanmar. A love of stickers – within a day, I had stickers for park entries, stickers for ... read more

If you want to take in a Myanmar cultural show with dinner included, I would strongly recommend the Karaweik Palace floating restaurant on Kandawgyi Lake. (Kandawgyi means 'great royal lake'). I have been there several times and the cultural performance there is worth seeing. It lasts for about an hour and half with traditional dances from the different ethnic groups of the country. Both the dinner and performance are included in the admission fee payable at the entrance . The fee was US$12 a couple of years ago, but has probably gone up by now to about $20 per person, which I think is still worth the price. The dinner is buffet style, and includes Burmese, Thai and Western cuisine. Karaweik Palace itself is a photographer's delight. Built in the form of the 'Hintha' mythical bird ... read more

Panorama view of downtown Yangon. Left: Sule Pagoda, Center: Yangon City Hall. Panoramic view of Yangon with the Sule Pagoda in background. Yangon is a religiously diverse city. You can find a Synagogue, Mosque, Church, Pagoda and Hindu Temple a couple of blocks apart. Traveling with another person can be difficult at times. Especially, if you both have different itinerary. As Rudyard Kipling the famous English author and poet described a long time ago, Burma (now called Myanmar) is a "Land like no other," the Shwedagon pagoda in the former capital of Yangon is truly an architectural wonder like no other temple. Built 2,500 years ago on a hill, it is the country's most sacred and revered place of worship. The hill where the pagoda is situated lies 190 feet or 58 meters above sea level, so this glittering landmark can be seen from nearly every part of Yangon city. Having lived in Yangon for half of my life (and on many subsequent visits), I of course have been there numerous times, but I am always spellbound by the majestic splendor of this huge place. A beautiful building or structure can move a person, but a ... read more

I have taken this trip several times. My main destination was Ye-Le Phaya or 'pagoda in the middle the river.' It is located in the small town of Kyauktan in Thanlyin (pronounced Ta-nyin) township. Thanlyin was formerly known as Syriam which was an important port city in the 17th century. However, most tourists are not familiar with this place as it is not included among the main tourist attractions of Myanmar. Therefore, if you want to avoid the usual tourist trail, do make this one day tour by car. You won't be disappointed. I believe you can go by bus, but as I've never taken the bus route I suggest you hire a car like we did one time. The other two times my friend took us in his car. From Yangon you cross the Yangon ... read more
