Monday 25th January 2016 To get from Laos to Myanmar we opted to travel by air, which on research seemed to be the best way to go, to be followed by a network of bus trips to get us through the country. After packing up our backpacks, our first flight of the day was mid morning and would take us as far as Bangkok on a 55 minute flight. We were travelling with Bangkok Airways, which has been our favourite airline so far providing a free lounge with free food, drink, wifi and comfy seating. Bonus! Especially important when you have time to spare on a stopover. After a 4hr wait in Bangkok airport we boarded our 2nd plane for another short 1 hour flight to Yangon. Although both flights together only equated to 2 hours ... read more

Day 6 & Day 7 Monday-January 18- We arose early this morning at the Dhara Dhevi Resort and had a quick breakfast prior to our pick up by Nok and Poi for our drive to the airport to get on our Bangkok Air flight at 11:00 for Yangon. We arrived in Yangon, went through immigration and looked for our AmaWaterways representative to transfer us to the hotel but no one showed up. A gentleman from the airport finally contacted the Shangri-La Hotel for us and Doug was able to talk with them. They said they couldn’t find the transfer but would have someone at the airport within 30 minutes wearing a red jacket. Doug went outside and was approached by a taxi guy asking if we needed a taxi and it would be $15US, saying no ... read more

We'd been three months on the road by this point, so we decided we deserved a bit of beach time. We took a night bus down to Yangon from Inle Lake and then on to Ngwe Saung Beach, on the west coast. We weren't expecting a huge amount from Ngwe Saung - the guidebooks describe it as not quite the nicest beach in Western Burma, let alone competing with it's Thai rivals further down the coast. When we got there though, it was perfect - just what we needed. Our hotel was the stereotypical beach bum hangout; the bamboo hut on stilts looking out over the ocean, the gently waving palm trees, the miles and miles of golden sands, the gloriously warm ocean, and of course the hammocks slung across our porch. We spent a wonderful ... read more

Yangon or Rangoon? Myanmar or Burma? Despite these potentially confusing name changes, the largest city in Myanmar is actually no longer the nation's capital city, that accolade having been snatched by the planned capital city Naypyitaw in 2005. Either way, Yangon completed the Myanmar jigsaw, which some would claim is laughably incomplete without a trip to Bagan, but with the sights of Yangon pending, the time felt right to get fully immersed in the whole scene. As with Mandalay, a car plus driver is a wise move for first-time visitors to Yangon, and on this itinerary, the ports of call were numerous, varied, and downright fulfilling. Botataung pagoda was a fine starting point, an exotic jaunt through a warren of golden sparkle, and following this visit up with ... read more

It was a short flight from Bangkok to Yangon International Airport. Touching down on Myanmar soil I had my e-Visa (https://evisa.moip.gov.mm/NoticetoTourists.aspx) ready and hostel booked. This time it was me that was approached by a fellow traveller wanting to share a taxi which suited me fine! My hostel was first - Pickled Tea Hostel - a half hour drive from the airport. I stayed here for four nights, eventually leaving on a night bus for Bagan on the 25th. Something happened when I arrived in Myanmar. I felt a sensation that I hadn't felt for a while. It was the feeling of excitement again, the feeling of being somewhere completely different to anywhere I'd been before. If I'm honest, the Malaysia and Thailand leg of my trip was a bit of lull. Perhaps it was because ... read more

I don't care who named it, or what you want to call it. But Rangoon is one of those city names that stays and stays, at least in my mind. I would compare it's intriguing name with cities like Addis Ababa, Rio de Janeiro, Cartagena, Buenos Aires, Cape Town, Wimbledon, and Reims. It certainly sounds more charming than Reno, Denver, London, or Madrid. But this is an old, disheveled work in progress, multi-ethnic, interesting, and even picturesque. The city border to the south and west is the Yangon River, also called the Hlaing River. To the east is Pazundaung Chaung (Canal),which flows into the Yangon River. To the north, the city pens up, spreading along long avenues. The northern end is where most businesses and hotels are located. The two most important townships outside of the ... read more

The Shwedagon Pagoda is one of the most famous pagodas in the world and it is certainly the main attraction of Yangon, Myanmar’s capital city. Locally known as Shwedagon Zedi Daw The, it sits atop of a hill and is 99 meters high. It can be seen from most places of Yangon day and night as the golden roof illuminates the city. According to some, the pagoda is 2,600 years old, making Shwedagon the oldest pagoda in the world. It sits atop Singuttara Hill, to the west of Kandawgyi Lake. According to most religious experts, Shwedagon Pagoda is among the holiest sites in the land. It is said to contain the relics of four previous Buddhas. People come from far and near to worship here. They say the pagoda is worth more than the Bank of ... read more

We travelled from the golden rock to the capital City Yangon. After five hours we finally arrived in Yangon. Our first impression was that the city isn't as big as we expected it to be. The other thing we noticed was that the main part of all the cars in the streets were taxis, so the locals don't really drive a car yet. The first night out we went to the 50th street restaurant/ pub which is really nice good food an nice atmosphere. Finally we could eat something else than rise which we ate for the last week. =) In the morning we went to see the Shwedagon Pagode the biggest Pagode in Yangon and the religious center of Yangon. It's a really nice Pagode and definately worth seeing it. After the we saw the ... read more

Monday, 10th August 2015 Breakfast was a local affair at the Rangoon Tea House this morning. The local staples, Mohinga and Tea Leaves Salad had clearly gone upmarket at this grand café with high ceilings and wooden floors. Food was rather ordinary even though we enjoyed the hot coffee. Back at the hotel, we arranged for a driver to bring us to the Kyaik Hmaw Wun Ye Lai Pagoda located at Kyauktan Province. This was a temple sitting on top of a lake. Access to the temple was via the hoards of overpriced boats waiting patiently for us as we got down to the jetty. To us, this was nothing more than a tourist trap and definitely not worth the journey from Yangon. For our late afternoon snack, we headed by to the KFC which commanded ... read more

Sunday, 9th August 2015 Happy 50th Birthday, Singapore. Day three in Yangon. We were off to the Shwedagon Pagoda after breakfast this morning. Located about 2.5km north of the city centre, the temple was a short taxi ride from our hotel in downtown Yangon. Entry fees was a hefty 8,000 kyats for foreigners. We passed by a few of the souvenir shops at the south gate before making our way to the temple. Surprisingly, the only determined touts we encountered were the flower sellers rather than the temple guides (reminded me of those street vendors that I encountered at the Guanyin Temple in Singapore). It was a hot day when we visited but there were many sheltered spots for us to take cover from the sun. After paying my respects and taken the "been there, done ... read more
