The Power of the Printed Word. We’ve all heard that phrase before … maybe about poetry, the Bible, political debates on the front page of the newspaper, or words of wisdom from a simple children’s book. I have never witnessed such a reaction to something I have written myself until June of this year. Most of you know that the Kensington Woods Church of Christ distributes a monthly newsletter for the TZ2000 work. Several try to pitch in and provide articles for it as we can, and I was excited when my “Sew Bee It” article was printed in the June edition. In case some of you done receive the Newsletter, let me first say that if you want to be put on the mailing list to receive it (it’s free of course), just let me ... read more

Today was my 3rd day here in Ghana, i'm staying with a wonderful host family who have 4 young children all under the age of 7 (Femmy-baby, Shaday-3, Ademolah-5 and Shola-7). Also staying with me is another traveler from Germany, Conny. In the house is My Osofomami (reverends wife) and to show us around is Pheobe 24, she knows 3 of the local languages here and knows her way around very well and makes sure that I eat everything and brings me my breakfast, lunch and dinner, always a hot meal. So far I have eaten banku- a soup eaten with the hands and a dough on the side to dip it in. I ate fufu tonight wich is almost the same thing but I like it alittle better. I've also eaten Red red, which is ... read more

Woke up to a yummy breakfast, pastries, breads, coffee etc. Went off to get our driver sorted for the rest of our travels around Tunisia after an eventful morning of trying to get money out of the teller machines. Then off to Carthage to see the ancient crumblies! Straight to the Antonine Baths on the Mediterranean Sea and then up to Byrsa Hill to see the Cathage Museum and Ancient Forum ruins. We then caught a taxi to Sidi Bou Said, which is a small village on the top of a hill overlooking the Sea. It is famous for its Whitewashed buildings and blue doors and fretwork on the windows. It was just as stunning as the pictures we had seen before arriving, we have taken so many photos of doors etc that we could publish ... read more

Wow! So much has happened in the last two days! Yesterday we went to Kakum National Park and did the canopy walkway = these bridges made out of rope and wood that are suspended hundreds of feet above the jungle floor. It was such an incredible, unforgettable experience. Then we met the Nana-hemaa, Queenmother, from the Efutu village. She is such an amazing woman - very well put together, wise, kind, funny, everything! And she is totally the mother type - the mother to the whole community! She said that when she is driving around if she sees a young lady with a skirt too tight she will make her driver pull over and yell at the lady! How funny right?! Today we went to Elmina Castle, which was sadder than I thought. It is the ... read more

Well nothing went as expected this week: the dining room floor is being finished as I write this and the water filter showed up and is working properly (I have drank 2 litres thus far and nothing bad has happened). Needless to say, I am a little worried right now because nothing has gone wrong in so long and things are actually being completed in a reasonable amount of time. It's just not Africa. With all the work though and Julie having gone to Masaka to teach kids there Capoeira, my week has been rather hectic. After teaching Monday, or was it tuesday? from 9-12, I then proceeded to help in moving sand and rock and mixing the materials for the first layer of the floor, all whilst mixing sweety water, handing out toothpaste and dealing ... read more

Heya everybody Well, I never thought this day would come but it's here. I leave tonight for Nairobi! The journey is sure to be interesting and challenging but I'm pumped and I feel ready to take it on. I am mainly trying to "focus on the journey" of climbing the mountain, of getting to know the people in my group and facing the challenges that each day offers rather than always thinking of the summit. Basically, we'll only be at the top for about an hour of the whole 5 days we're spending there, so it's important to remember to enjoy the rest! And it will make the climb up more enjoyable. I'm hoping that I'll be so wrapped up in what's going on around me that we'll turn around and suddenly "oh look, we're at ... read more

It has been less than a week since I arrived here and already I have begun to fall in step with everyday life here. Currently I am lounging on a couch in my favorite spot here in Maadi, drinking an iced tea and escaping the unforgiving desert heat. Oh, and enjoying the free wireless internet of course. Cairo has been as crazy and hectic as I have been informed, the people as friendly and unpredictable, the traffic as horrific, and the air... don't get me started. I am actually looking forward to inhaling the sweet, sweet smog of Los Angeles once again. So my apartment here is nothing home to write about, but by Egyptian standards, I know I am rather privileged. Anyway, we are having cleaners come by the flat later today and repairs are ... read more

Wow! so where do I even begin. I'm not sure. I guess by explaining the title of this entry. one of the first new experiences of many throughout these long last 4 days was the phenomenon of street vendors. I know they exist elsewhere in the US but i'm certain not to this degree. On the streets throughout Dakar they are absolutely everywhere! They walk up to you when you are walking down the street, they lean into your car windows they even call out to you as you drive by. And they sell everything from calling cards and jeans to hangers, canned tomatos, wall clocks and blenders! There are so many that eventually you stop saying "non, merci" and start ignoring or stating flat out "NON!". This week was described as orientation week, but much ... read more

http://macalester.facebook.com/photos.php?id=19401119&l=ca93f Only one more addition of photos of the mountain range that our school sits on which provides us with a nice hike from our house even when we don't necesarrily want the work out. School has been pretty hectic leading up to Spring break and now I am going on this crazy adventure. I leave early in the morning to fly to Joburg and then hop on an overland truck to go to Northern Botswana to a city named Maun and then we go to the Okavango Delta and Chobe National Park where we will go on safari at night and in walking groups. Then after about a week there we will be heading over into Zambia to see Victoria Falls and enjoy some whitewater rafting while we are there. I will post pictures as ... read more

Hey Annika, Just thought I'd sent a note to say "Happy birthday to you" (melodic)........ I was thinking of you today as we were doing our game drive at the Rhino Base Camp. It was fantastic - wish you were here! (Have you decided where you are coming to meet us yet?) : ) We are having a hard time leaving Plettenburg Bay, we are really loving it here - so so much to do. Looks like we are leaving in the morning though for an ostrich farm in Outdshoorn where you can ride ostriches. They also have this amazing cave system called Cango Caves that should be really interesting. Jordan is trying to convince me to let him go skydiving as he is allowed to here in South Africa and I thought about it for ... read more
