Hey Annika, Just thought I'd sent a note to say "Happy birthday to you" (melodic)........ I was thinking of you today as we were doing our game drive at the Rhino Base Camp. It was fantastic - wish you were here! (Have you decided where you are coming to meet us yet?) : ) We are having a hard time leaving Plettenburg Bay, we are really loving it here - so so much to do. Looks like we are leaving in the morning though for an ostrich farm in Outdshoorn where you can ride ostriches. They also have this amazing cave system called Cango Caves that should be really interesting. Jordan is trying to convince me to let him go skydiving as he is allowed to here in South Africa and I thought about it for ... read more

Day 2 - 7th September - A wasted journey ? Another very early start without breakfast and we were camped outside the office of the Technical Director of the Malawi Revenue Authority by 7am. He rocked up at 8am and, after a ceremonial washing of hands on his male secretary's desk, we were ushered into his office by the “Smithers” type character. We were pointed towards two very low and very threadbare chairs 5 metres from his presidential desk and Mr Chiumia started the talking. After much nodding and grunting, our man shakes his head. “I am really very sorry for your trouble in driving here from Nkhata Bay, but the office in Mzuzu should have told you that we are no longer able to waive duty on donations for NGOs as they have been abusing ... read more

Lake Nakuru Our first national park with predators today. Very excited, we got up early as usual and enjoyed the lovely shower facilities in the grounds of the private school (hot water - something to be savoured!) and headed off into Nakuru, where we wandered around for an hour or so while Vicki and Pat sorted out a problem with a tyre on the truck. Steve did some killer bargaining and got my chess set for a song. We wandered around a couple of corners from the main street and found ourselves off the beaten track, away from all other tourists in a local market where we got a lot of stares. Eventually we arrived at the gates of Nakuru NP where we set up lunch and were plagued by monkeys. They darted inside the truck ... read more

Africa » Zimbabwe » Victoria Falls September 7th 2006

Zimbabwe was emotional. With mixed feelings about our visit to a country torn apart by a vicious dictator, the decision was at least not ours to make, as our tour ended there. Zimbabwe is in dire need of assistance, but I guess it does not have enough oil, or pose enough threat to be worth any first world intervention. So I guess Mugabe will grow fat and old, untouched, which watching his people suffer and die. Zimbabwe had just revalued their currency a month before we arrived. Prior to this, you needed 20 of their largest banknotes just to make up the equivalent of a US Dollar. It would actually be cheaper to use their money as toilet paper, than buying actual toilet paper! Our tour leader told us of dinners where the bill reached into ... read more

Africa » Zambia September 7th 2006

We apologise for the brevity of this blog, and in all honesty we wouldn't have bothered writing anything as we don't really have much to say about our time in Zambia. In fact, we're actually quite selfishly publishing this blog just to colour Zambia red on our map of countries we've blogged from. Let us explain. In a previous conversation with Kurt and Mike (our American friends on the tour) we'd discussed at what point you can say you'd been to a country. Spending a few hours in an airport en route to somewhere else doesn't count. But if you stay a night in a country, then it does count. At the point of the discussion, Mike had been to 44 countries, I'd been to 27 and Kurt had been to 15. I think. Actually, at ... read more

Just spent a week in Egypt at the Red Sea aboard the Grand Sea Serpent, a Tony Backhurst Liveaboard dive boat. A group of 22 people from the dive club went and dived reefs from Elphinestone down to St Johns! I managed to do all the dives offered - waking up at 6am for a briefing and on the busy days doing 4 dives a day. Schedule was Sleep - dive brief- dive - eat -Sleep - dive brief- dive -Sleep - dive brief- dive -Sleep - dive brief- dive..... Slightly exhausting but all good! The last dive was my favourite, we saw a sea horse, guitar sharks, turtles, and a dugong!!! Great fun! I dived with Graham most of the week, which was interesting! My favourite buddy however was probably Jan - we did a ... read more

Early in the morning Mrs. Agesa lets the chickens out of the circular cement chicken house which is also the cook house. Then she gets a few pieces of wood and arranges them inside a circle of stones onto which she places her large sufuria filled from the rainwater collection tank. When that comes to a boil, she pours some off to a teakettle to make chai boiled with milk straight from her cows. The rest of the water goes into buckets, mixed with cold rainwater, and this is what you carry to the bathhouse to wash in. Each person gets about 1/2 bucket of water if she wants to wash, but not all Kenyans wash like this daily. The chai and some hot water goes into 4 thermoses that sit on the kitchen table all ... read more

Sooooo I am HERE!! It is ridiculous - I still feel like the full gravity of the fact that I am in Ghana has not yet hit me. So quick run through of what I have been up to: arrived in Accra on Friday night (it is dark outside by 6:30 pm each night) and made it through customs easily to be greeted by Aunty Nana, our academic director. Then we went to a hostel in Accra for food and introductions and sleep. The very next morning we loaded up on a bus (about 16 of us) and drove the 3 hours to Cape Coast, our home away from home. The first few nights in Cape Coast we stayed at Jacaranda Guest House which was... interesting. My roomie (Jocelyn from Carleton) and I picked out what ... read more

Day 1 - 6th September - The Road to Blantyre Getting me up and out of the house at 6am isn’t usually that easy, but today I was on a mission. . . .Pick up Mr Chiumia, drive 8 or 9 hours to Blantyre, appeal to the Technical Director of the MRA for the customs duty on our shipments to be waived, get a letter from him, drive to Blantyre airport and pick up my DHL parcel, drive on to Lilongwe airport, pick up the rest of the gear, drive back to Nkhata Bay, unload the gear and have a nice cup of tea. . .couldn’t be easier. The drive down the lakeshore was long and tiring with constant worries about running out of fuel (no fuel gauge in the car) but, with two international volunteers ... read more

Africa » Kenya » Rift Valley Province » Lake Naivasha September 6th 2006

Lake Naivasha and orphanage at Gilgil. Today was a mental day! Our heads were spinning. Up at dawn for a quick Denford brekkie (fried egg toasted sarnies and fruit salad, just the thing) and then back on the boat heading across Lake Naivasha, past the same group of hippos and spotting the same fish eagles sitting up in the treetops. This time we crossed the lake right to the other side and with our guides disembarked onto a beach to begin our walking safari in a national park. It felt like Jurassic Park! There were storks and pelicans on the beach and as we walked into the park area we gradually saw various impala, Thompsosn's gazelles, other antelope type things, and before long herds of zebra. Everyone was very excited and it really was the perfect ... read more
