After our Safari, we spent one night each in Arusha and Moshi. Nothing much to see and we were quite surprised how small they both are. It was a good time to relax a little bit and from Moshi we were able to see Mount Kilimanjaro - with snow at the top - quite a sight. We then travelled to Dar es Salaam and took a flight to Dubai We have been in Dubai since this morning - it's little milder this time - only 30 degrees (very humid though). We were able to get the Internet Cafe here and are off to India on Thursday. Hopefully we will update more from Kerala. Sorry, no pictures. It is very difficult at some of the Internet Cafes to publish pictures.... read more

Sorry no pictures again today, hopefully osofo will be taking conny and I in the next few days to go to a place that takes pictures from our memory cards and puts them onto cd's, because the cafe near our house has CD drives, so that I can show you beautiful Ghana! On Friday reverend returned from his 3 day trip to Togo and officially gave conny and I our African names. i am now Akosua (female sunday born) and Conny is Amivi (female saturday born). I'm picking up bits and pieces of both of the local languages here. Maydasi is thank you in Twi where Akpe is thank you in Ewe. Soon conny, osofo, and I are going to be posting notes around the house that has English, German, Ewe and Twi words and phrases, ... read more

Africa » South Africa » Western Cape » Cape Town September 11th 2006

So It's about time I added some more stuff to this page before I start getting complaints that I haven't written anything. I'm afraid I can't show you any photos yet as I'm in a hostel in the sticks which has just about got internet access and no more. So Cape Town was amazing. Sarah arrived a couple of days after me so I had a couple of days just sussing out the area before she got here. The first day we just did Cape Town and walked down to the waterfront whcih was very nice. Sarah got slightly carried away with all the African things for sale and bought a load of salad servers and giraffes - only to find that every other shop sold exactly the same thing! We also decided to treat oursleves ... read more

Africa » South Africa » Western Cape » Oudtshoorn September 11th 2006

Well, the past two days have been very exciting and exhausting. We finally left Plettenburg Bay and headed inland to this little town called Outsdhoorn. Don't ask me how to pronounce it, I have had many locals laugh at me when asking how to get there. This town is not very exciting but the backpackers hostel is amazing. It is called Paradise Backpackers and the name really says it all. I love watching Jordan doing his school work in the gardens with the owls hooting in the background. They have a really funny dog named Pheonix that will entertain you for hours - I do believe she is a bit wacko. The hostel is family run and Petra, the lady of the house, is so friendly and welcoming. She makes dinner every night, a dinner of ... read more

Africa » Tunisia September 11th 2006

As-salam 'alaykum! (a little Arabic for ya aka G'Day) Today we left Djerba headed to Tataouine, very excited as the photo's of this region are what made us decide on coming to Tunisia! We are entering the Ksour Region. First stop was Medenine which was pretty cool saw the ghorfas, although it rained when we arrived (not expected when so close to the Sahara!) but it didn't damper our enthusiasm. Climbed up onto the rooftops of the Ksar then headed off again on the road to Ksar Haddad which is another of the Ksour in the Tataouine. This was also made famous in Star Wars Phantom Menace - where Anakin Skywalker (Darth Vader) lived as a child. This was pretty cool, it used to be a hotel, but was closed down unfortunately as would have been ... read more

Africa » Zambia » Kitwe September 11th 2006

Working with Engineers Without Borders, one might expect me to be designing solar ovens or installing wells or developing new technology for Zambia’s development. But that’s not how we roll. We focus on building the capacity of local organizations. This essentially means that we help organizations who are already on the ground do their jobs better. In my case, EWB has partnered with the Zambia Agribusiness Technical Assistance Centre Ltd., a legally registered, independent, non-profit Zambian private organization. It may seem to be a misnomer that ZATAC is both a private organization and non-profit, but this is in fact the case. ZATAC doesn’t have shareholders who take in the company’s profits as a typical private company would, but it has guarantors who oversee the organization, but do not take any financial gain from their involvement - ... read more

Hey Gary, KM and Nollind…this blog is for you! There is a Male Support Group (MSG) alive and well in Kisumu. They call it the round table - kind of King Arthurian don’t you think? A group or table in this case of men (ages 18 to 40) get together to plot politics, socialize and do good in the community. This round table is looking at opening an orphanage in town. Notice the adornment on the Chairman …thought you fellas would get a kick out of this …let me know if you want to hook up with these fellow comrades? Apparently it is an international order. A bunch of us met the Round Table members at a car rally/treasure hunt last Sunday. We had an hour to answer 50 questions/riddles while driving a route around Kisumu. ... read more

Africa » Sudan » North » Khartoum September 11th 2006

well, im here....after the longest, most painful plane ride I have had yet. I made it here and all I can say is its bloody hot! My first impressions of Sudan are simple, hot! But its great there are so many people from differnt cultures Ethiopian, Eretrian, Arab, Sudanese, Westerns from all countries. There are so many more Westerners here than I originally thought there would be and in one place in particular you feel like you could be in any counrty around the world. "ozone", its called and its just as expensive as getting food in Western countries. They sell things like pasteries, cousoints (excuse the bad spelling) coffee, etc. Everyone one I have met has been so nice especially when Im not picking up any arabic (note: ive only been in Sudan for 3 ... read more

Africa » Togo September 10th 2006

So I've just spent my first two weeks or so in village and to be totally honest it was much harder than I expected. I am living on my own now in a rural African community, which means I do all my shopping, manage my time and schedule, and my learn the ropes of who I can depend on around me. It's difficult to constantly feel like a stranger since every time I leave the house children shout the Yovo song at me, and even adults address me loudly as 'foreigner.' But I am still new and as I get more comfortable it's becoming easier and I'm feeling more like I belong in Elavagnon. To be fair, I have a strong support system, starting of course with you all overseas, but extending to my fellow PCVs ... read more
