After spending almost three wonderful days in Amsterdam we boarded the long flight to Johannesburg and arrived in the early hours of Friday morning. This time I gave up trying to sleep and watched several movies - but don’t ask me what they were! The Virgin Atlantic flight was so much better than US Airways in cleanliness, quality of food, and service, it was amazing. Watching the sun come up as we approached Johannesburg was really beautiful. The dust that sits in the African atmosphere was lit by the sun and created a bright orange belt and streaks of brilliant pink and gray-blue that stretched along the entire horizon. We caught a cab to the Bahá’í Center, which is in a community called Northriding in Johannesburg. The Bahá’í Center is a former school that the National ... read more

the bus trip was an event that none of us will forget in a while..... The bus driver was a psychoath and was shouting and gesticulating more than he was driving but I have to give him credit for getting us safely to Mole as the weather was horrendous, we had the most amazing storms and the road, dirt, was like a stream. the driver paid no heed to this and we slid al over the place but amazingly stayed upright. we had not been able to prebook so I must now admit to feeling a little nervous the closer we got to Mole and the more isolated it became. We put our faith in the guide book and it was true to its word. We arrived in Mole exhausted but starving at 2100 and by ... read more

This is a kind of continuation of the covering/clothing theme from last time I (Sorry! I had about 5 hours of pure people watching this weekend and that's just what is most apparent usually)...but with a bit of a didactic ending ;) So Friday I went to a concert that was being held on Greek Campus (one of the two enclosed areas of campus) kind of like a welcome thing for students. It was supposed to go from 3-10ish with the main band on at 8--so we got there at 7:30. Of course, since the main singer is middle eastern (an egyptian dude's stereotype, not mine....thought I'm not negating its possible validity ;o) ) he was literally three hours late....so I just sat on these big steps and watched all of the AUC students interact. The ... read more

NOTE FROM RICH: "The following blog entry comes from an article I recently wrote for an upcoming issue of Peaceworks, a volunteer produced Peace Corps periodical. Enjoy!" "High Atlas Training of Trainers Hike, September 2006" (or "Four City Volunteers Take on the Great Moroccan Outdoors") By Rich Landrigan YD Ouaouizerht, Morocco Nestled up in the Azilal region of the High Atlas Mountains there’s a sleepy little valley named Ait Bououli. The hike from the top of the pass down to the dirt road that runs along the river bed boasts some of the most awe inspiring views in the Morocco. There are towering peaks of clay and sandstone, ancient Berber mud mansions that house entire extended families (called igrams), groves of olive, apple, and walnut trees, and trains of mules and donkeys carrying the loads of ... read more

I moved to Eldoret, Kenya about two and half weeks ago (September 8 to be exact). I am supposed to be here working until December 22. I am going to write a bit about what I am going to be doing here for the next few months as a Project Manager. There is a programme here that is run as a partnership between Indiana University (IU) and Moi University’s Teaching and Referral Hospital (MTRH), the programme is called AMPATH (Academic Model for the Prevention and Treatment of HIV/AIDS in Kenya). Residents from IU and from MTRH have an exchange program where IU residents come here to work for a few months and vice versa. AMPATH also has clinics set up in various sites in Western Kenya, two of which Mosoriot and Chulaimbo host our study. We ... read more

(afhankelijk van ... read more
