Overlanding Begins Up early to travel to Arusha - our first day on the truck! Yep, it's hot, dirty and dusty but we had a great view sitting near the front. There's about 17 of us on the truck, a mixture of Brits, Aussies, Kiwis, Canadians, Yanks and a Chinese girl. Everyone very friendly so we're sure to have a good laugh. Saw lots of Masaai on the way to Arusha, many had cute donkeys in tow and we spotted some wildlife from the truck, including giraffe and ostrich. The towns we travelled through were fascinating! It's hard to believe people live in such tiny tin shacks. Snake Park Arrived at Snake Park and set up the tent for the first time, which only took a few minutes. Had a wander around the Snake Park to ... read more

week 2 has been busy. Stephanie (co teacher) and i are starting to figure out the kids. african kids are pretty rambunctious, lots of hitting and crying, not a timid bunch. we've taught them a few songs, they really like the Hokie Pokie, it keeps their attention for at least 10 minutes! yay! the other big winners are Bubbles, that lasted about 20 minutes! and books as well, they don't have many books here, so they really enjoy sitting down and looking at them, a nice break for Mwalimu ( teacher). although they all want your attention to watch them count things in the books.... it's fun, although tiring somedays. Sometimes it's frustrating not being able to understand them, but we are lucky to have Douglas to translate for us. Today i taught an art project, ... read more

Hello Everyone, It's been another good week here in Tanzania. George has been working hard at getting the rooms painted inside our house. Most of the walls had been painted with a type of whitewash that comes off if the wall is wiped, so we needed to get the walls painted with something more washable. We've got the living room/dining room painted, as well as three bedrooms, and George's study room. We want to get the painting done before our belongings arrive. I know that some of you are curious about life in Moshi - what does it look like, where do we shop, etc. so I thought I'd include a few pictures this time of the town of Moshi. Shopping can be quite interesting! No such thing as Home Depot. George needed some plumbing ... read more

Today we went back to the Maitumaini School for disabled children to do some filming and give them some gifts we had brought over from Australia. We learnt more about some of the children at the school. One girl, Maria, was badly burnt when her family home was struck by lightening and burst into flames. As a consequence she is now an amputee - losing one leg just above the knee and her right arm below the elbow. Her mother died in the incident, her father two years later. She is now waiting for a prosthetic limb to be made for her at the Matumaini School workshop. Even though they are constructed in-house, prosthetic limbs are expensive costing up to 600 Australian dollars. A brace can cost up to $1,000. The school has to wait ... read more

So we arrived into Dar es Salaam this morning, were met by the guy from the language school and have settled into our Salvation Army Hostel which is basic but will probably seem like a luxurious memory once we move out to the camps! There was a church service going on in the hostel which I popped into for a few minutes, sang a few songs, great stuff! Anyway we're on our way to the beach so just to say I've arrived, all's well, other volunteers seem really cool and will write a proper entry soon!... read more

The Sunday Meeting at Morchimba corps was great. Even though it was extremely loud (they had a generator running the sound system and it seems the only volume here is full blast!), it was a great atmosphere with loads of dancing, clapping and hollering from the ladies! There were several special “acts” - two choirs sang beautifully and some of the children came up and danced. And the whole thing was over in just under three hours!... read more

but maybe not for me.. maybe cos i've been to Lamu.. and frankly.. first impresion.. Lamu's much better.. Lamu's a quieter more serene town with only one car and hundreds of donkeys... and Zanzibar is very developed.. many cars, many big roads.. hell, you get to see a container port when you get off the ferry! maybe that's becos i'm still in town.. going to do some diving around the waters nearby tomorrow.. and then will head up to Nungwi beach.. where many people go.. and where many people say the waters are simply beautiful... i'll be doing another dive around Mnemba Atoll (suposedly world famous).. and whee.. you can do drift diving there.. looking forward to that.. just recovered from a heavy bout of homesickness.. i guess when i'm travelling on the road and ... read more
