Now that the dust has settled and I have well and truly integrated into the African way of life (pole pole - translated as slowly slowly); I have reached the conclusion that it will take a lot of time to make any sort of impact at my volunteer placement. On a daily basis the three volunteers at my placement (the Tumaini Positive Test Centre - www.tupo.co.tz) undertake a mixture of activities such as teaching at the day care and attending sick members at their homes. The past few weeks’ activities have been unstructured and seemingly directionless, so I called a meeting last week between our placement organisers, the three volunteers and an interpreter. I think the TUPO organisers were initially aghast at the thought of plodding through my three page agenda, but we made some ... read more

Ok … I’ll admit …. It’s been a while. So sorry for that. We have been busy as bees. So, let me get you caught up! The first of the month we were at language school. We were there for 3 LONG weeks!! It seemed longer than it really was. It’s been a while since we have been in school so sitting in a class room getting called on to go to the board or speak out in class took some getting use to. Now, I will say that it helped Anthony in a way that some of you men folk will appreciate, in that I was forced to talk … not that I really needed an excuse of course! Now, what is good about that, is that according to Anthony from some statistic he read ... read more

Greetings! It's all about greetings here in Tanzania. Though spoken in Kiswahili, it's common and even essential to ask a string of greetings when you meet a friend, stranger or family member in any context. The particular variety of greeting can come in just about any shape or size, pertaining to any subject of your choosing: How are you? (fine) What's the news with work? (good) What's the news of the day? (clean) What's the news of the afternoon? (fresh) are you cool? (cool) You are welcome (thank you). It's just one part of the warm and welcoming culture here in Tanzania that makes it easy for anyone - even a mzungu like me - to feel at home. I’ve been so warmly welcomed here in Tanzania that sometimes I actually need to remind myself ... read more

Dear faithful supporters, We are so thankful for your prayers and financial support which sustain us as we work here in Tanzania. God continues to bless our family with health and amazing blessings unfolding in a fashion which seen to cry out for His providence. After being in the country for merely a week, we secured a house to rent at a very good price. Brent and Julie had done so much house hunting for themselves, that they were able to immediately point us to some choices. They have so graciously allowed six Jensens to live with them during our beginning days in this beautiful country. The title which appears above is dramatically etched in our minds as we reflect upon some events of the past few days. Our first Sunday at the Kilimanjaro church ... read more

Update: 27th May 2007. Yes thats right one month after I wrote this I finally got all the photos on to the site. God I miss REAL broadband and not what they think passes for broadband in Africa...they think that internet speed that registers over 1kb per second is fast. So after taking hours on culling the over 1000 photos taken on safari, and then getting them uploaded to the blog at snail pace, yes a month has past. Pole Sana (very sorry)...but hope you like!!! Original Message We had always planned to go on a big safari when Rachel’s mum and sister (Joy and Vanessa) visited us from the UK, as Rachel, Vanessa and her brother Mike had given Joy an African safari for her 60th birthday (before we knew we were coming to ... read more

Just a quick one to let you know that we drew two all in the match yesterday. It may well have helped that we had two national Tanzanian team members playing for us! It was quite an experience. I don't think I will ever get to play in a stadium again. I played in defence so managed to last the duration! I hope you are all keeping well.... read more

It's hard to believe that we've been in Tanzania for a week. We have been warmly welcomed by the mission team. We are extremely grateful to the Richardson family who has so graciously opened their home to us, until such time that we are able to find a house to rent. Here is an overview of our first week in Tanzania: Tuesday, 17th: After arriving at the Kilimanjaro airport, we were driven to Moshi by Brent Richardson, John Hall, and Christopher Mwakabanji. During the trip, the rains came down and soaked our luggage. When we arrived at the Richardson's home, the electricity happened to be out in part of their house - this time due to an electrical problem in the house, as opposed to the frequent power failures. George put his electrical skills to ... read more
