Well - still here in Cape Town, engine troubles yesterday just before our 'almost' departure for Saldanha. Guy coming tomorrow to hopefully fix it all up - apparently a gear box malfunction. VERY windy outside at the moment, just about to head back to the boat for some much needed 'shut eye'. Tomorrow might be the big day, hoping it is - as much as Cape Town is a beautiful city I think we all are ready to sail on out! With an expected 16 hour sail, if we leave tomorrow late afternoon, we should arrive in Saldanha sometime during the day. ... read more

Hello Everyone, Here is the big blog...I think it's gunna be a long one, because we have been doing a ton of stuff and have so much to tell you all. First off, we'll start with our flight from Athens to Dubai. We didn't really know what to expect out of Dubai, but the airport was super nice. On the flight over there, Justin noticed on the flight screen that we were in the "neutral (safe flying) zone" and then there were a bunch of other colored zones surrounding us, so that was kind of different ;) The flight was great though, they had a tv in every seat that allowed you to play games, watch tv shows, movies and you could even call other seats in the airplane, so i called up Justin, it was ... read more

Hey Guys!!! We thought we'd give you a quick update and write more details later, it's hard to find computer time here because South Africa is absolutely amazing!! It is by far the best place we have been and the highlight of our trip thus far, we are thoroughly enjoying ourselves. So, we started off in Jo'Berg and went on a Safari, which was very cool. We saw the big five: Leopard, lion, elephant, buffalo and rhino. As well as giraffes (tons of them), impala, monkeys, baboons, hyianas (not sure on the spelling), zebras and many many more...it was something else seeing them so close. Then we flew down to Capetown and did a Township tour. A township is basically an area of a city, or just an area that people live in shacks, it is ... read more

Damn it...I just tried to post a good, long post but lost it somewhere in cyberspace. So this will be shorter than it's supposed to be, but hopefully it'll say what it needs to. So I leave Cape Town in a few days...it's been a really interesting experience, and though it hasn't been perfect it's been a learning process the whole time. Uhm...yeah, so since I don't feel like rewriting this all over again, I'm just going to say that I'll tell better stories the next time i see/talk to you guys, and I'm looking forward to being home (or whatever best approximates home for the time being). Love and such BernieBear... read more

Geo: -34.1826, 18.4584Needed to keep Rebecca happy and make a lightning trip to Cape Town to visit the penguins in Simonstown. We stayed in our nicest hotel so far, right on Boulders Beach where the penguins were. The penguins put on a fantastic performance. So many of them and they're pretty entertaining birds to watch. So clumsy on land but acrobats in the water. Rebecca was in paradise as she's loved penguins all her life. We woke up early for the sunset and that was magical. Beautiful beautiful colours silhouetting the penguins. I was tempted to pppick up a penguin but apparently they have razor sharp beaks!! We stayed in Cape Town at Long Street Backpackers for a few nights. Had lots of fun most of which I can't remember! Cape Town's a fun place to ... read more

The anticipation that I felt as I stepped off the bus in Capetown had been building up for the entire 22 hour journey. I was not planning for the same adventures of Zambia or Namibia, but rather some quality time with a dear friend that had returned to her home in South Africa. When Claudia hollered my name from her car opposite the bus depot, I skipped across the road-even with my 20 kilo pack on! Isn't it crazy how some situations can make you feel like a kid again? We took the scenic drive to the house and I couldn't help beamig from ear to ear. This is partly because I soon had an ice cream in hand as we walked around Camps Bay with the third princess on the trip, little Emily. I am ... read more

Hi again all, I haven't posted so frequently since being here, but today is Mr. Mandela's birthday, so I thought I'd post. Funny enough, yesterday we visited Robben Island, where he was held captive for 27 years (longer than my own life so far, which is a strange thought) by the apartheid government that sought to silence opposition groups like the ANC. It is weird, slightly touristy visit (ferry and a bus ride once you're on the island), but once you're there it's all so powerful and visceral: seeing the cell where Mandela stayed for roughly half of his incarceration, seeing the rules posted about how much food people deserve based on skin color (didn't know "asiatic" was a term people still used this century, but hey), viewing the small garden in the inner courtyard that ... read more

Dear All, Quick Notes: Scott: I flew in that Thursday to Heathrow, dummy, and got there roughly an hour after everything started. But thank you for thinking of me anyway. Resh: Congratulations! :) Dad: I'll call soon. Thank you for sending a message though, and yes, this is where you post. Blue: I miss you too, kitty. I thought of you yesterday when I saw a stray cat outside our place. It meowed at me, and it sounded a little like you. Also, I've talked about you with some of my friends here who also have kitties they miss. *Hug* Anyway... It's been an amazing but challenging trip. I can't remember what I said last time, but if I'm repeating myself, it is only because the same thoughts have been overwhelming me since I've been here: ... read more

Hi everyone: Somehow, even thousands of miles away from DC and LA, I can still procrastinate and not write an entry until day FIVE of my trip. I am having a really good time. I live in a house with 15 other girls...depending on how well you know me, I thought this would be pretty painful, but they're all really cool (not sure if I'll think so after a month, though). I'll be honest, and I know this might disappoint some of the people who've traveled to Africa who might be reading this. I should have expected it, I guess, but CT is much much nicer than I expected. I knew CT was cosmopolitan, but not like this. But it is also a city of a million contradictions. On the same day we went to Camp ... read more

Back to Civilization The first day in Cape Town, my brain experienced total sensory overload from all the sights. And we’re not talking Table Mountain or the Cape of Good Hope, although they were awesome sights. We’re talking about simple things, like seeing houses out the airplane window; savoring my first fresh sandwich and my first café latte with fresh milk; ordering room service; and taking a shower with hot running water!!! Simply amazing. That was my first day - just getting used to “normal” life again and really being so thankful for having all these things again! You know I tried so hard to deal with the living conditions in Ghana, but let’s not forget deep down I am really just a Long Island princess and can always appreciate things like room service and complimentary ... read more
