Skydiving, I went rocky mountain climbing, I went 2.7 seconds on a bull named fumanchu, and I loved deeper and I spoke sweeter and I gave forgiveness I’ve been denying. And he said I hope someday I hope you get the chance to live like you were dying. Like tomorrow was a gift and you had eternity to think about what you would do with it … - Tim McGraw, “Live Like You Were Dying” What’s the first thing comes to mind when you hear the word Africa? Quick, don’t think about it, just tell me what the first thing is. Whatever you said, I can guarantee that is not Cape Town at all. Each morning when I woke up I had to remind myself that I was in Africa because it didn’t feel any different ... read more

Langa is one of the numerous townships settled around Cape Town. If you listen to the people around you they will tell you not to go alone in these areas of the city. Well, i didn't feel like going on a tour where you basically drive around the township in a luxious van and take pictures of the people like if you were in a zoo. I mean how would you feel if a bunch of exited japanese folk came to your place to take pictures of you cooking or gardening? ... read more

With 10 miles behind me and 10,000 more to go… - James Taylor I would just like to start off by thanking all of you who have sent me email or made comments on the blog. Even though I am not very efficient at responding I do read them and enjoy getting the messages. So thank you. And those of you whom I haven’t heard from since I left buffalo a month ago, drop me a line and let me know you’re still alive. It makes me feel less homesick… Here’s a long post of my life at sea, you can read as much or as little as you would like, I’ll warn you now, its kind of long and not very organized. I tried to make it interesting but I don’t know how good of ... read more

We couldn't resist checking out the highest bungy jump in the world at Bloukrans River Bridge (Along the Garden Route in South Africa). The jump is 216 meters which is over 708 feet of free falling. Justin was happy just looking and being the camera man but it was my idea to go out of our way to get to the bridge, so I just had to jump. For the first part of the jump, you free fall for 5 seconds and on the rebound bungy you fall for another 3 seconds (the rebound bungy is higher than the Victoria Falls bungy at 111 meters). And then you bounce up and down a bit more swaying all over the place...It was absolutly nuts, the jump is huuuuugge! You really have no idea how big it is ... read more

Well yesterday was the lowest point of my trip. First I missed breakfast because I forgot to set my clock ahead an hour (we’ve had to do this 5 times in the past week!) Global studies was awesome, Archbishop Desmond Tutu was at center stage and giving a wonderful performance, he really is an encouraging and jovial man. But after that uplifting hour and a half, a visibly distraught Dean John had to address the shipboard community and break the news to us that we are no longer going to Kenya. We’ve known all along that the political climate in Kenya is somewhat shaky, but the US has just issued a new travel advisory specifically for maritime vessels cautioning any stops in Kenya or anywhere along the eastern coast of Africa. Apparently terrorism and piracy, yes, ... read more

Well, after two attempts at leaving the berth we are still tied in at the Royal Cape Yacht Club. The engine troubles, consisting of both a faulty gearbox and the engine being out of alignment have both been sorted out now. We're back to square one again, i.e. waiting for a good weather window! From this morning's forecast, we're going to be having NW winds all weekend and as well as till Tuesday, not such good news, although we don't have a timetable and there is no real 'rush', Cape Town is expensive and I know I would rather be spending my moola somewhere like Brazil. So it looks like we might be here until Wednesday now, might just have to start knitting some scarves.... read more

Well - still here in Cape Town, engine troubles yesterday just before our 'almost' departure for Saldanha. Guy coming tomorrow to hopefully fix it all up - apparently a gear box malfunction. VERY windy outside at the moment, just about to head back to the boat for some much needed 'shut eye'. Tomorrow might be the big day, hoping it is - as much as Cape Town is a beautiful city I think we all are ready to sail on out! With an expected 16 hour sail, if we leave tomorrow late afternoon, we should arrive in Saldanha sometime during the day. ... read more
