I just wanted to say, I woke up this morning to shear joy! I read all your comments and received many B-day wishes ( which I LOVED). More important were the many comments from those of you that see my journey, as something you would like to give some of your time and energy too! I am so proud that with only my eyes and a few thoughts put down, I have been able to whisper in a few people's ears, to help make a difference in our world. That is a B-day present that means more to me, then any material item. It is the gift of your heart, to care about people, you will never see or meet. I am so proud that a group of people, like me, who don't have money, fame, ... read more

Today is my birthday… I won’t mention which one but I will say that I have been dreading this one for a while. (By the way those that know how old I am, if you say it on the blog, I will not put it onJ) Spending this time in Africa has given me a new prospective on life and this is wonderful! I have made it to Cape Town, which is truly a striking city. It’s mountains and ocean are truly beautiful. I see why it is the top tourist location in Africa. As you fly into the city, the fog sits on the city and Table Mountain like a hat, on a lady, going for British High Tea. The air is crisp with the winter feel, but warm enough so you are still comfortable ... read more

Even though it does say South Africa on this entry most of you will know that I'm actually in my dining room in Watford writing this.... Yes, after all the planning, shopping, fretting and excitement its all over! But I thought I'd stick my pics of South Africa up as it really was one of the highlights of the whole 5 months and I wish I'd had more time to explore but there's always next time.... Think my last entry was from Wanaka in the south island of NZ. It was a very picturesque place. I climbed Mount Iron and got some cool views of Lake Wanaka. Next was down to Queenstown. This is known for the adrenalin activities and the partying - of which I did neither! More hill climbing though and a day trip ... read more

The first photo on the right was Nelson Mandela's cell for 18 of his 27 years of imprisonment on Robben Island. It's tiny. Mandela is a tall man, so he couldn't sleep straight in the cell. The tour of Robben Island is a must see attraction from Cape Town. Along with the Sector 6 Museum. Sector 6 was a multi racial inner city district of Cape Town. It's very existence was living proof of the nonsense of apartheid fascistic social engineering. So, the apartheid authorities bulldozed the whole area, and moved the population out onto the sands of the Cape Flats. Robben island is now a world heritage site and a tourist trap. But it is a very good tour. All the tour guides are themselves ex-political prisoners, and have harrowing tales to tell of the ... read more

Hi Guys Firstly, thanks to everyone who has mailed since our last blog. Sorry we haven't had a chance to reply individually, hopefully we'll get more opportunity when we get to Oz. Quick update on the KPI's!!! Finances = Green (ish) Fitness = Amber (still) Relationship = Green Arguments = Zero We left Cape Town last Thursday. Unfortunately we didn't make it up the mountain as there was just too much cloud. So we now have a reason to return at a later date! And since we have been travelling around we have both decided we want to come back to South Africa. It is a beautiful country, people are so friendly and the scenery is stunning. And they have a very large wine region! We discovered this when we stayed in Franschhoek and went wine ... read more

I looked back at some records and found that it was exactly a year ago today that I embarked on a trip to Tenerife and Spain. At that time I was surrounded by ever increasing piles of stuff requiring compression into various suitcases but now all I'm really doing is compressing my music collection onto my IPOD. There's this cool gadget called ITRIP that lets you play the pod onto your car radio, which will make it easy to stay groovy in the car. But I digress. This trip to Joburg has come about due to the fact that the movie that I've been working on over the last few years is finally nearing completion, and it only needs me to track down some footage in Joburg. 30 betacam tapes to be exact. If you look ... read more

Hi Guys For those of you just want a quick update of how we're doing, here's the RAG status!!! Finance = Green Fitness = Amber Relationship = Green Arguments = Zero Here we are in sunny Cape Town - we can say this today but it has been a little wet over the past couple of days! Not that is has stopped us doing anything (except getting up Table Mountain), we've still done all the other things we wanted to do. So what to say about Cape Town? We do really like it here. It took us a couple of days to find our feet and feel safe but so far we haven't had any problems (famous last words!). The appartment we are staying in is great although we have no lock on our patio door. ... read more

I'd been watching African wildlife specials on the telly, dear reader, and my desire to visit the dark continent was building to a crescendo. There's a famous song in Australia that goes ... football, meat pies, kangaroos and holden cars; but it seems that Africa can go one better. The prospect of spotting the big five and other spectacular wildlife amidst glorious African sunsets was very exciting, and the novels of the African writer Wilbur Smith helped fuel my passion. So I was full of anticipation as I boarded a westbound flight across the mighty Australian continent, over the Indian Ocean and onwards to South Africa. I wasn't excited to start my trip in Johannesburg, but I was aware of safety problems in the South African capital. So I thought it best to ease my way ... read more

I got back from my (short) trip to Cape Town last week and had a great time when I was there. Cape Town, still recovering from the dark days of apartheid, is totally separated, culturally, racially and economically, which became apparent to me only when I took a guided tour of the townships. The townships were set up to "house" the non-whites during the Apartheid seperatism and are basically sprawling shantytowns. Seeing the township and meeting the people of the townships is something every visitor to Cape Town should do, rather than confining themselves to the expensive suburbs, beaches and wineries enjoyed largely by white people. Before I went, I thought of this tour as extreme tourism, but when I was there I realised that the people, despite being really poor and unemployed, have built a ... read more

22 Dec 2004: First time out of the country alone AND first time in Africa - apprehensive? not 'arf! But just looking out over Table Mountain, as the plane sweeps over Cape Town, the excitement is unbearable - no fear what-so-ever - I'm actually feeling rather emotional (in a happy way) at the beginning of my independence. I get the growing feeling this may be the start of the rest of my life. John and Lidia live in a very civilized part of town, Constancia, or the Cape's equivalent of Chelsea back home, nestled beneath the protective peer of the mountain range and facing the bracing warmth of the coastline. Having seen books and photos of South Africa for years, particularly Cape Town, I was not surprised that it felt more like a trendy European city ... read more
