All tiredness from a long flight suddenly disappear when we draw into the Entabeni range area. Alongside there was a Giraffe family. We draw around to get closer until we were few meters from the big animals. The trip started when we went straight form Johannesburg Airport to Pretoria to se one of the capitals of South Africa. Along the streets in Pretoria the Jacaranda trees were blossoming with the most beautiful purple flowers giving the town a special look. We couldn't get out of the bus because of danger of being robbed. After having the lunch at a pancake house we drove to our destination – Entabeni Game Reserve. As we drove into the park the fun began there was Impalas along the road and suddenly we saw a Giraffe standing close to the road. ... read more

Mapungubwe has been on my bucket list for a while. Why? For a combination of reasons: it’s a World Heritage site where the Golden rhino was found so the significance of its history plays a part, heard the scenery is really beautiful and if you are camping you may hear some animals at night. So off we went on a short safari, camping for 8 days at Mazhou camp. We didn’t plan to go to a Heritage site when it is Heritage month in SA, that was quite coincidental but appropriate. Mapungubwe is a strange conglomerate of conservation area, farmland & mining. We camped on the wild side, only 10 stands with limited ablution facilities that were kept clean and always had hot water, except for one night when we had NO water, but I’ll get ... read more

... read more

Habe wunderschoene sightings gehabt, unter... read more

Geo: -24.6601, 28.6966Again this morning we got up at 7am. We started the day with an Amarula coffee and rusks. We drove to the Jacana Hide. Along the way we saw the largest bird in the world – an ostrich. At the hide we saw many types of weavers, but not much else. As we drove back towards camp we saw a journey of giraffe. There were four of them. We stayed and watched them for a little bit. Back at camp we had toasted jaffles for breakfast and then packed up. I wish we could have stayed here for longer. It has been a relaxing trip. Next time I would like to do more of the walking trails. A few hours later we were back in Johannesburg. That evening we had a fun night out, ... read more

Geo: -24.6463, 28.6884This morning we got up at about 7am. Before going out for a drive we had a coffee with Amarula and some rusks. This morning we were going to the other side of the nature reserve. The strange thing with this game reserve is that to get to the other side, we had to exit at the gate and then enter again. The gate at the other side was locked with a combination padlock, we were given the code on check-in yesterday. The drive to the other side took us about twenty minutes. We entered this gate and walked towards the Croke Hide. This morning we saw many birds, butterflies and various dragonflies. The Croke Hide had also been burnt down by the bushfire. We then walked to the Dabchick Hide. This one had ... read more

Geo: -24.6463, 28.687This morning we met Neil and Claudine at Stuart's house. They happened to be in Johannesburg for leave the same time as us. The four of us went to the supermarket and bought food for our short trip away. Just after midday we finally left Johannesburg for Nylsvely Nature Reserve. It was a nice drive north and it gave us the chance to catch up. Paul and I were here about 18 months ago and really enjoyed our stay. This nature reserve consists mainly of a floodplain, but it is not flooded very often. This reserve attracts a large variety of birds, especially water birds and is a bird lover's paradise with over 380 varieties! There are also mammals here, but nothing dangerous. Due to this there were many walking paths in the reserve. ... read more
