So we flew into Phalaborwa from Johannesburg. On the smallest pane I have ever seen in my life. This had propellers for christ’s sake… And it only had 25 passengers at maximum capacity. Very scary indeed but a lot of fun. Phalaborwa is a small little mining town on the edge of the Kruger National Park, Africa’s largest and the ultimate place to see the big 5. Lion, elephant, buffalo, cheetah and Rhino. We were planning to stay a little over a week in a cozy guest house only 2 kms from the gate. We arrived and were very warmly greeted by our hosts, Helmut and Linnette. They were so lovely, catering to our every need along with providing us with the knowledge and information relating to our stay. Helmut, suggested that we stay a couple ... read more

It took 3 1/2 hours from Johannesburg to get here in Entabeni Private Game Reserve in the Limpopo Province. Made it a couple of hours before sunset. That means we do our first safari drive today. And we were in luck to have Henri as our safari ranger. Fresh out of teens, on his first job, on his first guiding assignment. We climbed the safari cruiser like we do it everyday. Must be the adrenaline. After all, this is our very first safari experience. So imagine a bunch of greenhorns in one cruiser, giddy with excitement on this high-octane adventure searching for the Big 5. Our first rhino sighting was soon followed by more sightings of wildebeests, giraffe, impalas, warthogs. Young Henri tried to impress us with his expertise on dung. He would stop the safari ... read more

This happened at the PMC Mine in Phalaborwa South Africa. Where else in the world would one find one of Africa’s “Big Five” wondering around the mine premises. As the Mine manager commented, We have a new “Engineer” on site. As they say only in Africa ! For those of you who do not know, The World renowned “Kruger National Park” is only a few kilometres from the mine.... read more

I've always loved roughing it in the bush but the Father person in our house is not very keen on getting dirty. His type of holiday is the hotel/chalet/cruise ship type. With great effort we managed to convince him to try it at least once. We managed to get a good tent and what we thought we will need for basic camping and off we went... We decided on Mapungubwe National Park. This park is way north in the Limpopo province of South Africa with the Botswana/Zimbabwe/South Africa border about 10 meters from the road we traveled to the bushcamp. What an incredible site! There was about 10 sites with literally just basic ablution facilities available. I loved it. And he loved it. And the boys loved it. We had peace and quiet for a whole ... read more

Life is not measured by the number of breaths we take, but the moments that take our breath awayI have had so many wonderful dreams come true in my life, it is hard to think that traveling to South Africa for a safari would be as high on the list as it was. But as a child I remember wanting to go to Africa for far different reasons thinking my trip would consist of missionary trips or volunteer medical work. However during my travels throughout the last few years, I have grown in ways unimaginable. Becoming aware of the environmental impact we as humans have on nature and our world has been overwhelming and my respect and reverence for nature has developed. This would be a true trip of a lifetime. Not only would it prove ... read more

Malembe is the Shangaane (local tribe) word for the Black Rhinoceros. One of the megafauna of Africa, they are territorial and shy. Smaller than the white rhino, they are also called the hook-lipped rhino, adapted to browsing rather than grazing. White rhinos are also larger and have a hump on their shoulders and rump, but more docile then the black rhino. I know each rhino by name now, Duchess, Zoli, Khuza, Thokamisa, Zulu, Buza, the list goes on. Released into the reserve three months ago, they are all young and still establishing their territories, which means their movement patterns are sparodic. Thokamisa has been the most reliable, almost always near the same lodge. Yesterday we had our first rhino siting, Deena watering near one of the damns. Francios spotted her through the trees, quite far off, ... read more

Paradise is quiet in the days early light, birds heralding the rising sun as it shines across the tree tops. I am alone in the kitchen, a moment of stillness before the hustle and bustle as each new day begins. My memories of the camp in Zimbabwe cling to the periphery of my conciousness as dew clings to leaves of grass, bombarded with familiar sounds and smells. The child that I was still stares in wonder at this world, the land humming with life, leaves rustling in a dry breeze, the sweet smell of thatching warmed by the sun. Red earth and thorny trees, laughing doves and the scolding of the Go-Away bird, these I remember. Rotini pasta with cream of mushroom soup and nights cold enough for a down vest are also things of the ... read more

Rock picking has not been one of my favorite past times. I remembeer being dropped off on Yarrow Creek with a "Be back in an hour!!!" and left there for......eons. Many hours during my teenage years were spent building wire baskets and then filling them with rocks to replace fence posts in the rocky creek crossings. In Africa though, it is much harder to find rocks. We mine them out of washouts and ravines, prospecting for good ones, the big ones that will not sink into an oblivion of red sand after one pass with the land rover. There is a boundary fence on the west side of the reserve, whether it is protecting the big five or the villages on the other side I am not quite sure, but the animals will be shot if ... read more
