My stay in Venda is coming to a close. Ben and (hopefully) Frances will fly to South Africa this Friday (16th) and we will be touring around before flying to Zambia next week. I took advantage of some beautiful weather over the weekend - it's getting hot as we close in on summer in the southern hemisphere - and drove to some local sites. Check out this website for more about the parks and waterfalls in the area. (http://www.vhembe.gov.za/index.php?page=tourism ) Many spots in this region have spiritual and magical qualities where you can talk to the ancestors and visit sacred buriel sites. One of the places we saw was Lake Fundudzi. The road was rocky and steep, so we didn't venture very far in my VW Polo - I needed more of a 4 wheel drive! ... read more

Hello all, I am nervously watching the news about the election tomorrow … perhaps it has been decided by the time you read this. It is all over the news in South Africa and people are, for the most part, hoping that Obama will win. He has been a popular candidate, somewhat because of his African roots, but also because he is more competent in international affairs. I am entering my 3rd week at University of Venda and feel pretty comfortable with the place. I can find my way to the cafeteria, which is an accomplishment! Univen has 11,000 students (both undergrad and grad) and is a former homeland university. This means it was terribly understaffed and underfunded during the apartheid regime. They have since attempted to improve the campus and faculty with more money and ... read more

I’ve been following all of the news about Hurricane Sandy … WOW! It seems to have packed a punch for most everyone in the eastern U.S. Be safe and watch out for your neighbors! Snow in the mountains of West Virginia while it is 80 ° and sunny here! Anyway, here’s my latest news … The suburb north of Thohoyandou, Sibasa, is a rapidly growing town where I'm living in a neighborhood that people still refer to as the ‘white area’. I was confused about this description, having never seen another white face during my short stay in this place. It turns out that it used to be a white neighborhood during the apartheid era. Long story short … Venda is a former homeland or Bantustan in South Africa where blacks were relocated as part of ... read more

Hello all, Update from Thohoyandou ... I know, difficult to say, but it is well worth the trip! I arrived Sunday afternoon and found my university guest house in a nice area north of town. My roommate is a woman from Kenya, working here as part of a volunteer organization on community development. Yes, we have lots to talk about! The place is comfortable and the neighborhood quiet. It is a verdant area with lots of mango, banana, and jacaranda trees in full bloom - it is spring after all! The house has 6 bedrooms so I had a big choice since there are only the 2 of us for now. TV, kitchen, bathrooms, and (hot) water most of the time. Colleagues and students at the university are making me feel very welcome. It is a ... read more

This is a place i call home whenever i am in Pretoria and living the city life. It is tropical...you can just stop and have a photo taken thats how great and free it is. This is where i come whenever i want to get away from everything that the city has to offer and getting far and far away from the cities rush. Where you find mountains and fresh air and not soooo much of air pollution sooooo you can just breath!! i find it very amazing that the culture here is still alive and respected. Its funny how we are all into material things and when i get home there is no such and how they are happy with nothing and thatz a peace of mind. There is a sense of Ubunto, caring and unity ... read more

Geo: -24.4296, 27.6086This morning we treated ourselves to a little sleep-in, packed up our tent and left camp at about 8am for our game drive. The only animals that we could see from the campsite were three ostriches. From the main road we drove along Tsessebe Loop and along here we had an amazing sighting. There were three adult white rhinos on the road. Then two of them started to play fight. They held their heads low and knocked each other's horns for a few minutes. It was really gentle and amazing to see them from a few metres away. Once they finished play fighting, the three of them walked around eating grass. We continued on and came across another great sighting. It was a couple of Dwarf Mongoose running around on a termite mound that they ... read more

Geo: -24.3971, 27.6196We woke up this morning just before 6am. When we got out of the tent we nearly bumped into ostriches that were wandering through the campsite. Once we were ready we set off for our morning game drive. We drove directly to the gate that leads into the Big 5 area. Along the way we saw tseebees, ostriches, a nice sunrise, warthogs busily digging in the ground looking for roots, blue wildebeest and their young, zebras and baboons. In the Big 5 area, once again we didn't see much at all, except for great scenery. We drove along Ndlopful Drive then onto Lekganyane Drive and at the end we turned right and began the 4x4 track. At first the track was not very 4x4ish and then it got very bumpy. It took us about 45 ... read more

Geo: -24.4071, 27.6031At around midday we arrived at Marakele National Park. We decided to come here after hearing our friends Tony and Nicola speak highly of this national park. It was also on route back to Madikwe Game Reserve. It is situated in the south western section of the Waterberg Mountains. The national park is divided by a fence into two sections, one area for general game which included white rhino and the other area was the Big 5 area. We were camping at Bontle Campsite, site number 10 on Rhino Loop (which is one of three loop roads) – the only campsite in the park. It was about a five minute drive from the entrance gate to the campsite and is in the general game area. The campsite is unfenced and has a great view ... read more

Geo: -24.6488, 28.6884This morning we had a little bit of a sleep-in. After a quick coffee and biscuits we set off for a drive. We drove straight to the hides on the other side of the reserve. So we drove out of the gate and then entered again on the other side. Today started off as an grey, overcast day. From the hides here we saw a large herd of Roan and a couple Common Reedbucks. Paul also identified quite a few birds that we did not see yesterday. We then went back to our camp.At camp we rested for a few hours. We had lunch and just after midday left camp on foot for a walk. We walked along the walking trail towards the Jacana Hide. I was happy to go for a walk, I ... read more

Geo: -24.6495, 28.6867We have spent the past few days in Johannesburg with Paul's parents. For the rest of our leave we were visiting Nylsvley Nature Reserve for two nights and then off to Marakele National Park for two nights. We left early this morning, stopped along the way to buy food and a few other supplies. The whole journey took us a few hours. Nylsvley Nature Reserve is not a big five game reserve. It consists of the Nyl River Floodplain, which is one of South Africa's largest floodplain system. The floodplain is not always under water. This reserve is well known for its large variety of birds, about 380 different varieties. There are also quite a large variety of mammals, but nothing too dangerous. Here we can either go for game drives or do unguided ... read more
