We woke up this morning just before 6am. When we got out of the tent we nearly bumped into ostriches that were wandering through the campsite. Once we were ready we set off for our morning game drive. We drove directly to the gate that leads into the Big 5 area. Along the way we saw tseebees, ostriches, a nice sunrise, warthogs busily digging in the ground looking for roots, blue wildebeest and their young, zebras and baboons.
In the Big 5 area, once again we didn't see much at all, except for great scenery. We drove along Ndlopful Drive then onto Lekganyane Drive and at the end we turned right and began the 4x4 track. At first the track was not very 4x4ish and then it got very bumpy. It took us about 45 minutes to get to the end of the track. Along the way the only animal we saw was a little Grey Duiker. The silly thing with this track is that at the end – we have to turn back! It is a dead end track, which I think is a bit useless, at least it could have joined back onto another road. Paul enjoyed the
02 Ostrich
A female ostrich walking through camp. 4x4 driving and I was bumped about at bit.
So we turned around and headed back to camp via Mbidi Rd and the direct main roads back. It was pretty fun driving the 4x4 track, even though the sightings were pretty scarce. We saw more zebras on the way back.
Back at our campsite there were a couple of ostriches walking around. As we had brunch, a very friendly, curious ostrich walked right up to our braai stand and tried to take our food off it! Luckily we had finished cooking and were eating our toasted cheese and tomato jaffles, so we didn't lose any food. The ostrich did manage to find herself a few crumbs. We relaxed for a while and enjoyed the variety of animals near the waterhole.
Being a Saturday Paul had to watch rugby, unfortunately there was a pub across the road from the park's entrance. We left camp just before midday. I did find watching rugby to be boring, having a few drinks made it better. After the game we went back to sit at the camp and continue to enjoy the great sightings.
When we arrived back at the camp, it was all happening. It
05 Tseebee
A beautiful brown coloured antelope. seemed to be peak hour at the waterhole. There were many of the following animals -giraffe, wildebeest, warthogs, impalas and various birds. It was so easy to sit back in the chair and take in the scenery.
In between watching these animals, we also had to keep an eye out for the ostriches who were still wandering through the camp looking for food. We started chatting with the campers next to us and then sat with them for the next hour or so.
At 5pm we left camp with our new friends for a short game drive. It had to be a short drive as we were not allowed to be driving in the park after dark. We drove along the main road – Ndlofu Drive and then the two small loop roads – Tsessebe and Nyala. On our drive we saw a female kudu, a warthog carcass – unfortunately nothing was eating it, warthogs that ran into their holes when we drove past, impalas and three white rhinos.
Tonight we sat around the fire with our new friends.
