We left the Kruger Park and all the wild animals behind us. In the second last day we would travel to Pretoria, where the last day we had multiple options how to spend the day. In the evening, we should go back to the airport to catch our flight. It was the last night that some of us slept in a tent. We packed our tents, made some breakfast and packed our lunch. At 7 we left the Kruger Park and the animals behind us. We would follow a great nature route, the Panorama route. It is not so long and famous as the Garden Route, but it’s really worth. In one day, you are able to travel this entire route. You do not spot here safari animals, and because the route is shorter and has ... read more

Well, the time has come to take that flight to that country where the Lions roar, the alligators bathe, the giraffes munch, and the tourests gawk. Most of the time we will be the ones in a cage or protected and the animals will be free. Our trip will consist of Wild Game Drives, spectacular views and highlights. We won't be close to fruit bats I hope. (They are apparently the source of Ebola.) You cannot be to prepared for a trip like this. So, we are bringing as usual carry-on luggage and thats it! Clothing is optional. The transit time will be 29 hours and the time change is 6 hours ahead like Europe. Our first stop actually will be Zimbabwei (Victoria Falls). So, the day after we arrive we hop on a flight through ... read more

After writing off Saturday (bad barbecue effects) we decide to go on a tour of Johannesburg and Soweto. Eschewing the hotel recommended tour guides we take a recommendation from a friend and procure ourselves a local outfit - after some delay Charles turns up and we start our own personalised tour. Johannesburg is a huge, sprawling conurbation merging into Pretoria and with satellite cities around it. Even on a Sunday it takes time to get around it. First stop is the house where Mandela lived until his recent death. It's in an affluent jacaranda tree lined road in Haughton - it's quiet with no one else there when we arrive. A single car on the drive signifies family members are at home. On the verge are small flower beds with painted stones giving best wishes to ... read more

You can't come to Johannesburg and not go to Soweto. You can't go to Soweto and not do the politics. It's a place that confirms your knowledge (yes it's a township with huts, dirt tracks, shared taps and illegally tapped electricity) and it also confounds your perceptions (it's affluent in parts, very middle class in parts, there is wealth and its on show - BMWs on drives of beautiful villas covered in bouganvillea). its refreshing. There are lots of primary and secondary schools and two universities. The importance of education as a way of advancevent for the individual and society is well understood - which is different to ten years ago. There is clearly aspiration - talking to Charles he sets out the ambition of people and he says the juxtaposition of middle class achievement is ... read more

Jozi / Joburg / Johannesburg: Arrived at Joburg on 16th of October, we had to under go a temperature check before entering South Africa (for Ebola)! At the airport we were picked up by the chauffeur of Thea and Jan and treated as princesses for the whole day. They arranged for us to sleep some days at the Hilton hotel in the north of Joburg, in Sandton. From there we started our first days in Joburg. We visited Mandela square and nothern shopping mall were we discoverd many white people. In contrary to our sightseeing tour with the hop-on hop-off bus, that brought us in the center of Jozi, where we were the only white people in the whole shopping mall. We even played a little game that consisted in finding the first white person... Neither ... read more

Geo: -26.1538, 28.0389Our initial plans for Johannesburg were very limited- we had heard all of the warnings about Joburg and the downtown area in particular remains something of a war zone. Johannesburg is the second largest city in Africa with over 3 million people calling it home and crime remains one of its biggest challenges. We picked a hotel in the relatively safe Sandton area which even offered an airport pickup service. Unbeknownst to us this pickup service came with the services of a very proud and passionate South African driver who soon convinced us that we had to explore a little bit more of Johannesburg (Joburg to the locals) particularly the famous/infamous Soweto Township which was Ground Zero for many of the bigger Apartheid related struggles. We made arrangements with our new friend, Themba, Themba's passion for ... read more
